Based on provisional data, on 1 January 2020:

  • The resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.3 thousand, i.e. by 145 persons more than at the beginning of 2019;
  • Urban population totalled 1 million 882 thousand (67.4 per cent), rural population – 912.3 thousand (32.6 per cent);
  • Woman accounted for 53.3, men – 46.7 per cent of the total resident population;
  • The number of children (aged 0–14) totalled 423.1 thousand (15.1 per cent of the total resident population), people aged 15–64 – 1 million 815.3 thousand (65 per cent), the number of elderly persons (aged 65 years and older) – 555.9 thousand (19.9 per cent);
  • The largest number of elderly persons was recorded in Utena, Alytus and Panevėžys counties (24.6–23.2 per cent of the county’s population), while that of children – in Vilnius and Klaipėda counties (16.5–16.2 per cent).

Earnings

In 2019, based on provisional data, average gross monthly earnings, individual enterprises included, in the whole economy amounted to EUR 1296.2; compared to 2018, after elimination of the influence of the changes in gross earnings indexation due to changes in taxation since 2019, increased by 8.8 per cent.

In 2019, average net monthly earnings amounted to EUR 822, and over a year increased by 14.2 per cent. The real earnings over a year increased by 11.6 per cent.


Industrial production in IV quarter 2019

In IV quarter 2019, compared to the same quarter of 2018, total industrial production, calendar adjusted, decreased by 0.1 per cent at current prices (unadjusted – increased by 0.1 per cent), the manufacturing production – increased by 0.5 per cent (unadjusted – 0.6 per cent).

In 2019, industrial production totalled EUR 23.3 billion at current prices and, compared to 2018, calendar adjusted, increased by 3.5 per cent at constant prices (unadjusted – by 3.4 per cent).

In 2019, compared to 2018, based on provisional data, gross agricultural production index increased by 11 per cent, and gross agricultural production at current prices amounted to EUR 2.62 billion.

Turnover of goods in marketplaces having an administration (except marketplaces trading in motor cars)

In IV quarter 2019, the turnover of trade in the marketplaces totalled EUR 98 million, and, compared to III quarter 2019, decreased by 3.7 per cent at current prices. Trade in food products decreased by 9.6, plants and animals – 17.5 per cent, while trade in non-food products increased by 2.3 per cent.

In 2019, the turnover of trade in marketplaces amounted to EUR 393 million at current prices, which is by 1.2 per cent more than in 2018.

In 2019, against 2018, grain harvest increased by 17 per cent (amounted to 5,129.1 thousand tonnes), rape harvest – by 37 per cent (595 thousand tonnes).

Compared to 2018, sugar beet harvest decreased by 17 per cent (amounted to 740 thousand tonnes), harvest of apples – by 62 per cent (34.9 thousand tonnes).

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of December 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 

793.3 thousand, which is by 892 less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–November 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year:

  • the number of live births increased by 114 (0.4 per cent) and stood at 26,137;
  • the number of deaths decreased by 962 (2.7 per cent) and stood at 35,069;
  • the number of marriages decreased by 435 couples and the number of divorces – by 47 couples;
  • the number of residents who emigrated from Lithuania increased by 7,151 persons (23.6 per cent) and stood at 37,474;
  • the number of persons who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 18,810 persons (1.7 times) and stood at 45,514.

In January–November 2019, the majority (59.3 per cent) of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In III quarter 2019, average gross monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) totalled EUR 1,306.3 and, against II quarter 2019, increased by 2.2 per cent.

In III quarter 2019, average net monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to EUR 827.8 and, compared to II quarter 2019, increased by 2 per cent.

In III quarter 2019, against II quarter 2019, real earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) grew by 2.3 per cent.

Services producer price index (SPPI) and price changes


Over the year (in III quarter 2019, against III quarter 2018) the biggest increase in prices was observed for accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities, tax consultancy (12.2 per cent), air transport (8.9 per cent) and data processing, hosting and related activities; web portals (7.8 per cent).

The biggest drop in prices was observed for transportation services via pipelines and publishing services (19.8 and 14 per cent respectively). 

In III quarter 2019, against II quarter, the biggest increase in prices was recorded for transportation services via pipelines (4.3 per cent), accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities, tax consultancy (3.4 per cent), but the most significant drop in prices was observed for accommodation (12 per cent) and travel agency, tour operator reservation service and related activities (10.3 per cent).

In 2018, expenditure on social protection amounted to EUR 7.2 billion, and compared to 2017, increased by 13.1 per cent.  In 2018, the relative share of social protection accounted for 15.9 per cent of GDP (in 2017, 15.1 per cent). In 2018, expenditure on social protection per capita amounted to EUR 2,574, which is by EUR 320 (14.2 per cent) more than in 2017.


Transport and communications

In November 2019, 496.5 thousand passengers arrived at or departed from the airports, which is by 8.1 per cent more than in the same period of last year.

In November 2019, the amount of freight handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal amounted to 4.5 million tonnes, which is by 12.6 per cent less than in November 2018.

In November 2019, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 16.2 thousand, or by 7.1 per cent less than in November 2018.

In November 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 306, 9 people died and 382 people were injured. The number of road accidents involving children totalled 38; 45 children were injured. 18 road accidents were caused by drink-driving, 1 person died and 34 people were injured.

Based on provisional data, in 2018, investment in tangible fixed assets in the country totalled EUR 8 billion, which is by 8.9 per cent more than in 2017.

In III quarter 2019, against II quarter 2019, real earnings in the whole economy grew by 2.3 per cent: in the public sector – by 2.4, in the private sector  – by 2.3 per cent.

Energy
 

In September 2019, motor gasoline resources increased by 2.4 per cent, liquefied petroleum gas and diesel fuel used for road transport – by 1.7 per cent each, but crude oil resources decreased by 2.7 per cent.

In the said period, electrical energy resources increased by 4.5 per cent, and natural gas resources decreased by 45.7 per cent.

Agri-environmental indicators
 

In 2018, herbicides accounted for the biggest portion (48 per cent) of the total plant protection product amount used for agricultural plant care: fungicides and plant-growth regulators made up 25 per cent each, insecticides – 2 per cent.

In September 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 357, 17 people died and 443 people were injured. The number of road accidents involving children totalled 69; 76 children were injured and 1 child died in the accidents. 10 road accidents were caused by drink-driving.

Enterprise bankruptcy

In I quarter 2019, there were 852 enterprises against which bankruptcy processes were initiated (by 24.6 per cent less than in I quarter 2018). The number of bankruptcy processes initiated significantly decreased in Alytus and Marijampolė counties (by 51.3 and 47.1 per cent respectively), while it increased in Tauragė, Šiauliai and Utena counties (by 30, 28.6 and 17.6 per cent respectively). Mainly bankruptcy processes were initiated in wholesale and retail trade (27.2 per cent) and construction (17.6 per cent) enterprises.

The assets of all enterprises against which bankruptcy process was initiated in I quarter 2019 at the beginning of the bankruptcy process amounted to EUR 18.5 million, or 52.5 per cent of all creditors’ claims (EUR 35.2 million)


Tourism

Based on provisional data, in August 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 1.3 million (by 10 per cent more than in August 2018), the number of nights spent by foreigners  totalled 541.9 thousand (by 9 per cent more).


Agriculture

In September 2019, against September 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products decreased by 4.7 per cent.  Purchase prices of plant products decreased by 9.4 per cent, animals and livestock products – increased by 2.8 per cent.

In September 2019, against September 2018, the share of purchased ovine  increased by 58.5 per cent, that of cattle – 16.7 per cent.

The share of strawberries purchased in III quarter 2019, against III quarter  2018, increased by 2.5 times, while that of apples – decreased by 55.1 per cent.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, the resources of liquefied petroleum gas increased by 9.4, motor gasoline – 6.5 per cent, while the resources of road transport diesel decreased by 0.3 per cent. In 2018, the average net annual earnings of a person who is living alone, working and having no children totalled EUR 8,691 and, compared to 2017, increased by 10 per cent. The average net annual earnings, with social transfers for family and children, of a married couple with two children, when only one of the spouses is working, totalled EUR 9,776 and, compared to 2017, increased by 13.4 per cent.

Since I quarter 2019, calculation of the service producer price index of two new economic activities – accommodation activity and travel agency, tour operator reservation service and related activities – has been started.

Over a year (II quarter 2019, against II quarter 2018), the largest increase in prices was observed for postal activities under universal service obligation (16.2 per cent) and other postal and courier activities (10.4 per cent), decrease – legal (22.3 per cent) and publishing (14.3 per cent) activities.

In II quarter 2019, against I quarter 2019, the largest increase in prices was recorded for air transport (18.1 per cent) and accommodation (14.9 per cent) services, while decrease – transport via pipelines (8.5 per cent) and cleaning activities (4.9 per cent).

Investment in tangible fixed assets

In 2017, investment in tangible fixed assets within the national territory totalled EUR 7.3 billion and, against 2016, increased by 5.8 per cent.

The main focus of investors is on Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties. Based on the 2017 data, Vilnius county received 40 per cent of the total national investment, Kaunas county – about 19 per cent, Klaipėda county – 13 per cent of the total investment. Investment in Tauragė county accounts for the smallest share, i.e. 1.6 per cent of the total investment.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products decreased by 1.9 per cent. Purchase prices of crop products decreased by 5.7, those of animals and animal products – increased by 4 per cent.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, the amount of strawberries purchased increased 3.6 times, while vegetables – decreased by 14.5 per cent.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, the amount of cattle purchased increased by 4.5 per cent, while eggs – decreased by 25 per cent.

Tourism

Based on provisional data, in July 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 1.3 million (by 8.3 per cent more than in July 2018), the number of nights spent by foreigners  totalled 486.4 thousand (by 6 per cent more).

In 2018, against 2017, the number of domestic overnight trips increased by 4.5 per cent and stood at 2.6 million. In 2018, the average duration of domestic trip of Lithuanian resident was 2.7 overnight stays. The average expenditure per personal trip of a resident totalled EUR 73, per business trip – EUR 84.

In 2018, the number of same-day trips stood at 12 million and, compared to 2017, increased by 2.7 per cent; the average expenditure per same-day trip totalled EUR 28.

Financial and insurance activities

In 2018, commercial banks earned EUR 441.1 million net interest income (EUR 30.3 million more than in 2017) and EUR 329.2 million net profit (EUR 93.2 million or 39 per cent more than in 2017).

Income of financial leasing enterprises totalled EUR 79.7 million (17.9 per cent more than in 2017). Net profit earned by the above mentioned enterprises amounted to EUR 27.6 million (2 per cent more than in 2017).

In 2018, gross premiums written in the life insurance market totalled EUR 293.8 million and, against 2017, increased by 8.3 per cent. Gross premiums written in the non-life insurance market totalled EUR 768.7 million, or 14.2 per cent more than in 2017.

In 2018, life insurance enterprises earned EUR 18 million net profit, or 13 per cent less than in 2017. Net profit earned by non-life insurance enterprises amounted to EUR 22.8 and, against 2017, increased by almost 1.4 times.

The number of passengers carried by Lithuanian airlines decreased by 35 per cent, by inland waterway transport – 10.3 per cent.

  • In July 2019, the number of passenger cars registered in our country for the first time totalled 16.8 thousand, or by 3.9 per cent less than in July 2018.

  • In II quarter 2019, AB Lietuvos paštas received and sent 5 million 870.2 thousand despatches of correspondence and 59 thousand postal packages, or by 2.3 and 6.5 per cent respectively more than in II quarter 2018.

  • In II quarter 2019, the number of active subscribers of public mobile telephone network totalled 4 million 548.4 thousand, that is by 0.8 per cent more compared to the same period 2018.

  • In July 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 344, 21 people died and 431 people were injured. The number of road accidents involving children totalled 58; 72 children were injured and 2 children died in the accidents. 15 road accidents were caused by drink-driving. 

  • In July 2019, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 595.4 thousand – that is by 3.2 per cent less than in the same period last year.

  • In July 2019, in Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 4.6 million tonnes – by 5 per cent less than a year ago.

In 2018, in the Capital County, the average monthly disposable income per household member totalled EUR 613, in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – EUR 429 (in the country – EUR 482).

In July 2019, against July 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 2.6 per cent.

Purchase prices of plant products increased by 2.7 per cent, animals and livestock products – 2.5 per cent.

The share of apples purchased in July 2019, against July 2018, decreased by 95.6 per cent, that of strawberries – increased by 54.6 per cent.

In 2018, one Lithuanian citizen consumed 109 kg cereals and cereal products, which is by 11 kg less than in 2017; the amount of meat and meat products consumed totalled 99 kg (4 kg more than a year ago).

In 2018, the number of passenger cars registered in our country totalled 1 million 431 thousand, or by 5.4 per cent more than in 2017. The amount of passenger cars, compared to 2017, most significantly increased in Marijampolė (7.1 per cent), Kaunas (per cent), Vilnius (5.9per cent) and Klaipėda (5.5 proc.) counties.

In II quarter 2019, the number of television subscriptions totalled 672.4 thousand, that is by 3.9 per cent less than in the same period 2018; of which cable television subscribers – 337.8 thousand, or by 6.3 per cent less.

It is expected that in 2019 the area of cereals sown will amount to 1 million 508.3 thousand hectares, which is by 3 per cent more than in 2018.

The area of sugar beet is expected to total 14.8 thousand hectares, or by 8.6 per cent less than in 2018.

The area of rapeseed is estimated to be 245.8 hectares, or by 17.5 per cent more than in 2018.

In I quarter 2019, the general government deficit totalled EUR 234.5 million.

Enterprise bankruptcy

The assets of all enterprises against which a bankruptcy process was initiated in 2018 at the beginning of the bankruptcy process amounted to EUR 112.2 million, or 45.4 per cent of all creditors’ claims (EUR 247 million). The least share of assets covered by creditors’ claims was registered in Šiauliai (15.5 per cent) and Alytus (25.9 per cent) counties.

The number of employees in the enterprises against which a bankruptcy process was initiated in 2018 at the beginning of the bankruptcy process totalled 4,583. An average number of employees employed in the enterprise at the beginning of the bankruptcy process was 2.2 employees. The highest average number of employees was recorded in Telšiai and Šiauliai counties (6.4 and 3 employees respectively), the lowest – Panevėžys and Marijampolė counties (1.3 and 1.9 employees respectively).

Economic entities in operation

In 2017, there were 5,241 enterprise groups operating in Lithuania, which is by 7 per cent more than in 2016. International enterprise groups amounted to 3,158 , of which only 590 (or around 19 per cent) – controlled Lithuanian enterprises.

In 2017, the majority (1,005 or 19 per cent) of enterprise groups operating in Lithuanian were engaged in wholesale, except trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of July 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 791.9 thousand, which is by 2.3 thousand (0.1 per cent) less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–June 2019:

The number of live births stood at 13,395 and compared to the same period of the previous year, decreased by 747 (5.3 per cent);

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths decreased by 781 (3.8 per cent) and totalled 20,033;

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of marriages decreased by 31 couples, while that of divorces – by 47 couples;

18,782 residents emigrated from Lithuania, which is by 3,383 persons (22 per cent) more than in the same period of the previous year;

23,139 persons immigrated to Lithuania, which is by 8,468 persons (1.6 times) more than a year ago;

The majority (59.9 per cent) of persons who came back to Lithuania in 2019 were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania.

At the end of 2018, the length of state and local roads amounted to 85.6 thousand km, or by 1.5 per cent more than in 2017.

In II quarter 2019, goods carried by rail amounted to 13.3 million tonnes, which is by 4.6 per cent less than in the same period of 2018.

In June 2019, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 15.8 thousand, or by 11.7 per cent less than in June 2018.

In June 2019, 392 road traffic accidents with casualties were registered, in which 18 people were killed, 481 – injured. 78 accidents with children as casualties were recorded, in which 84 children were injured. 19 road traffic accidents were caused by drunk persons.

In June 2019, 604.8 thousand passengers arrived at or departed from the airports, which is by 0.9 per cent less than in the same period of last year.

In June 2019, the amount of freight handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal amounted to 4.9 million tonnes, which is by 1.7 per cent more than in June 2018.

  • At the beginning of 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.2 thousand, i.e. by 14.7 thousand (0.5 per cent) less than at the beginning of 2018.

  • At the beginning of 2019, the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania accounted for 98.3 per cent of the country’s resident population, those of Ukraine – 0.5 per cent, Russian – 0.4 per cent, Belarus – 0.3 per cent.

  • Most residents of the country (2 million 656 thousand, or 95 per cent) were born in Lithuania, 138.2 thousand (5 per cent) – abroad.

  • Almost half (48.8 per cent) of the resident population aged 15 and older were married, 10.1 per cent were divorced, each eleventh – wido­wed. The number of divorced women was 1.8 times, that of widowed women – 7 times higher than that of men.

  • In 2018, there were 10 live births per 1 000 popula­tion (in 2017, 10.1). As in 2017, the total fertility rate was 1.63.      In 2018, the mean age of women at the birth of the first child was 27.8 years (in 2017, 27.5 years).

  • In 2018, the crude death rate (the number of deaths per 1 000 population) stood at 14.1 (in 2017, 14.2). In 2018, the number of infant deaths per 1 000 live births was 3.4 (in 2017, 2.9).

  • In 2018, life expectancy at birth for men was 70.9 years, for women – 80.6 years. As in 2017, the difference between life ex­pectan­cy at birth for men and for women was the same as in 2017 – 9.7 years.

  • In 2018, there were 7 marriages per 1000 population (in 2017, 7.5) and 3.1 divorces (in 2017, 3). In 2018, the number of divorces per 100 marriages stood at 43.8 (in 2017, 40.2). The ratio of marriages to divorces is more precisely reflected by the total divorce rate, which is calculated taking into account the duration of the previous marriage. If the previous year’s ratio does not change, it is probable that, out of 100 couples, 39 will get divorced.


Tourism

Based on provisional data, in May 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 762.4 thousand (by 7 per cent more than in May 2018), the number of nights spent by foreigners totalled 396.8 thousand (by 7.1 per cent more).


Purchase of agricultural products

In June 2019, against June 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 7.9 per cent.  

Purchase prices of plant products increased by 10.1 per cent, animals and livestock products – 4.7 per cent.

The amount of fruit and berries purchased increased by 87.5 per cent.

In II quarter 2019, against the same period in 2018, the amount of apples purchased increased by 3.2 times, strawberries – 41.3 per cent less.

Compared to 2017, the number of foreign tourists whose trips to Lithuania are organised by travel agencies or tour operators increased by 7.5 per cent, the number of Lithuanian residents’ trips abroad increased by 23 per cent.

  • Average gross monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) totalled EUR 1,251.9 and, against IV quarter 2018, increased by 1 per cent.
  • Average net monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to EUR 796.5 and, compared to IV quarter 2018, increased by 6.8 per cent.
  • Real earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) grew by 6.7 per cent.

In 2018, expenditure on scientific research and experimental development (R&D) works in the higher education and in the government sector totalled EUR 248 million, i.e. by EUR 8.5 million (3.6 per cent) more than in 2017.

The major proportion of R&D expenditure fell within the higher education sector – EUR 153.2 million, or 61.8 per cent of the total R&D expenditure, while in the government sector – EUR 94.8 million, or 38.2 per cent.

In 2018, in the institutions of the higher education and government sectors, the number of employees engaged in R&D activities (both at the main and the secondary workplace) amounted to 18 thousand, of whom 8 thousand – researchers with a scientific degree.

Road transport 

In June 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 301, 5 people died and 380 people were injured.

The number of road accidents involving children totalled 68; 74 children were injured in the accidents.

13 road accidents were caused by drink-driving. 

Railway transport

In 2018, freight traffic volume by railway transport totalled 56.8 million tonnes of cargo, transport of passengers by rail – 5.2 million, or by 7.9 and 11 per cent respectively more than in 2017.

In 2018, 1 million 431 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country; that is by 5.4 per cent more compared to 2017, of which individual passenger cars – 1 million 228 thousand, or by 4.5 per cent more.

In May 2019, 16.4 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country for the first time; that is by 10.5 per cent less compared to the same period last year.

In 2018, AB Lietuvos paštas received and sent 23.5 million despatches of correspondence and 257.2 thousand postal packages, or by 24.5 and 35 per cent respectively more than in 2017.

In 2018, the number of active subscribers of public mobile telephone network totalled 3.8 million, that is by 1 per cent more than in 2017.

The majority of bankruptcy processes were initiated in the enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade (32.6 per cent), construction 14.5 per cent) and administrative and support service activities (8.3 per cent).

In 2018, funds received in educational institutions amounted to EUR 1.9 billion, which is by EUR 159 million, or 8 per cent, more than in 2017.

General government funds accounted for the vast majority (82 per cent, or EUR 1.5 billion) of all the funds obtained by educational institutions. Over the year, they increased by EUR 104 million (7 per cent). The amount allocated by the country’s natural or legal persons increased by EUR 25 million (10 per cent) and made up 14 per cent (EUR 260 million) of all the funds received by educational institutions.

In 2018, one person studying in the educational institution, on average, received EUR 2,598 from the general government funds and EUR 589 – from the country’s and foreign natural or legal persons’ funds (in 2017, EUR 2,360 and 484 respectively).

The employment rate of persons aged 20–64 accounted for 78 per cent and, against IV quarter 2018, decreased by 0.3 percentage points, against the respective period 2018, increased by 1.9 percentage points.  

The unemployment rate of persons of the above mentioned age group stood at 6.6 per cent and, against IV quarter 2018, increased by 0.5 percentage points, against the respective period 2018, decreased by 0.7 percentage points.

  • In I quarter 2019, goods carried by inland waterways transport amounted to 138.6 thousand tonnes, which is by 5.1 per cent less than in the same period of 2018. Passenger transport by inland waterways stood at 214.6 thousand, or by 12.8 per cent less.

  • In I quarter 2019, the number of passengers carried by all modes of transport stood at 94.7 million; compared to the same period of 2018, it decreased by 1.9 per cent. Against I quarter 2018, passenger transport by sea increased by 31.3, by rail – 21.9 per cent. The number of passengers carried by Lithuania’s airlines decreased by 20.5, by inland waterways – 12.8, by road – 2.1 per cent.

  • In April 2019, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 17.2 thousand, or by 5 per cent more than in April 2018.

  • In I quarter 2019, a public limited company AB Lietuvos paštas received and sent 4,755.8 thousand items of correspondence and 67.5 thousand postal parcels, which is, respectively, by 6.4 per cent less and 4.2 per cent more than in I quarter 2018.

  • In I quarter 2019, the number of active mobile phone subscribers amounted to 4,485.2 thousand, which is by 0.9 per cent more than in the same period of 2018.

Fertility

In 2018, 28.1 thousand live births were registered; compared to 2017, the number of live births decreased by 547 babies, or 1.9 per cent.

In 2018, the major portion (44.3 per cent) of live births were first order births (in 2017, 46.3 per cent); second order births increased from 38.2 per cent in 2017 to 40 per cent in 2018. The proportion of third and higher order births increased from 15.5 in 2017 to 15.7 per cent in 2018.

In 2018, the number of live births outside marriage amounted to 7.4 thousand, or 26.4 per cent of all live births (in 2017, 7.7 thousand, or 26.8 per cent).

In I quarter 2019, investment in tangible fixed assets in the country totalled EUR 1.3 billion, and, compared to I quarter 2018, increased by 10.8 per cent at constant prices.

Investment in construction and acquisition of residential buildings totalled EUR 252 million, which is by 18.8 per cent more than in I quarter 2018.


Job vacancies and occupied posts

In I quarter 2019, the number of job vacancies in the Capital Region of Lithuania stood at 10 thousand, in the Central and Western Region of Lithuania – 9.1 thousand. In I quarter 2019, compared to IV quarter 2018, the number of job vacancies increased in both regions: in the Capital Region – by 1.6 thousand (19.3 per cent), in the Central and Western Region of Lithuania – by 1.5 thousand (19.2 per cent).

In I quarter 2019, compared to IV quarter 2018, job vacancy rate in both regions increased by 0.2 percentage points; in the Capital Region and the Central and Western Region of Lithuania, it stood at 1.8 and 1.2 per cent respectively.

In April 2019, compared to April 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 10.8 per cent.

Purchase prices of crop products increased by 12.8, those of animals and animal products – by 8 per cent.

At the beginning of 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.2 thousand, i.e. by 14.7 thou­­sand (0.5 per cent) less than at the beginning of 2018.

At the beginning of 2019, 1 million 875.4 thousand (67.1 per cent) residents of Lithua­nia lived in ci­ties and towns, 918.8 thou­­sand (32.9 per cent) – in rural areas.

The number of women in Lithuania was by 203 thousand higher than that of men (1 million 498.6 thou­­­sand and 1 million 295.6 thousand res­pec­ti­vely). Wo­men accounted for 53.6 per cent of the total resident popu­lation; there were 1 157 women per 1 000 men.

At the beginning of 2019, the number of children (aged 0–14) amounted to 421.9 thousand, or 15.1 per cent of the total number of resident population, people aged 15–64 – 1 million 819.9 thousand, or 65.1 per cent, elderly resident popu­lation (aged 65 and older) – 552.4 thousand, or 19.8 per cent. The number of children was by 23.6 per cent lower than that of elderly people.

  • In autumn 2018, 28.6 thousand pupils started the first grade of primary school, which is by 1,040 (or 3.5 per cent) less than in 2017.

  • In 2018, in general schools, 25 thousand pupils obtained basic education certificates (in 2017 – 27 thousand), 23 thousand school-leavers – general certificates of secondary education (in 2016 – 24 thousand).

  • At the beginning of the 2018–2019 school year, the number of teachers and schoolmasters in general schools amounted to 29 thousand, which is by 0.9 thousand (2.9 per cent) less than over the 2017–2018 school year period.

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of April 2019, 2 790.3 thousand resident population were living in Lithuania, which is by 3.7 thousand (0.1 per cent) less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–March 2019, 6 311 babies were born, which is by 556 babies (8.1 per cent) less than in the same period of the previous year.

In January–March 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths decreased by 981 (8.5 per cent) and totalled 10 548.

In January–March 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of marriages decreased by 167 couples, while the number of divorces decreased by 73 couples.

In January–March 2019, 9 787 resident population emigrated from Lithuania, which is by 1 627 persons (19.9 per cent) more than in the same period of the previous year. Over the three month of the current year, 10 360 persons immigrated to Lithuania, which is by 3 666 (54.8 per cent) persons more than in January–March 2018.

In January–March 2019, most of the immigrants (62.2 per cent) were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In 2018, the average monthly labour costs in enterprises of industry, construction and services totalled EUR 1,310 and, against 2017, increased by 10.5 per cent (EUR 124).

Religious communities

Under the data of the Ministry of Justice, at the end of 2018, the number of religious communities, groups and other religious organisations, registered and entered into the Register of Legal Entities, totalled 1,312.  Roman Catholic religious communities accounted for a major share thereof (i.e. 900 communities, or 69 per cent).

In March 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 228, 12 people died, 261 people were injured. The number of road accidents involving children totalled 37; 41 children were injured. 8 road accidents were caused by drink-driving. 

In I quarter 2019, freight traffic volume by railway transport totalled 13.6 million tonnes of cargo - that is by 2.7 per cent more than at the same time last year.

In March 2019, 14.6 thousand of passenger cars were registered in our country for the first time; that is by 6.1 per cent less compared to the same period last year.

Based on provisional data, in February 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 427.9 thousand (by 4.7 per cent more than in February 2018), the number of nights spent by foreigners  totalled 183.2 thousand (by 5.9 per cent more).

In March  2019, against March 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 11.1 per cent.  

Purchase prices of plant products increased by 18.8 per cent, animals and livestock – 0.9 per cent.

Social security

In 2018, the average annual number of state social insurance old-age pension recipients amounted to 578 thousand, that of state social insurance work incapacity (disability) pension recipients – 192.2 thousand, which is by, respectively, 0.2 and 2.2 per cent less than in 2017.

In 2018, the average state social insurance old-age pension increased by 12.4 per cent and amounted to EUR 311.54.


Operating economic entities

At the beginning of 2019, there were 127,054 local units in Lithuania: 47,247 – in the Capital Region, 79,807 – in the Central and Western Region of Lithuania.


Vocational training

At the beginning of the 2018–2019 academic year, there were 34.2 thousand students attending vocational training institutions; compared to the 2017–2018 academic year, this number decreased by 8 thousand or almost 19 per cent. In 2018, 15.8 thousand students were admitted to the vocational training institutions (in 2017, 20 thousand).

15 thousand qualified specialists graduated from the vocational training institutions in 2018, the majority of them – the specialists in the field of engineering (3.3 thousand), business (2.8 thousand), services to persons (2.7 thousand), architecture and construction (1.5 thousand).

In 2018, 4.5 thousand graduates of vocational training institutions received matriculation certificates.


Energy

In February 2019, compared to February 2018, the resources of crude oil decreased by 21.9, motor gasoline – 12.4, liquefied petroleum gas – 3.2 per cent, while the resources of road transport diesel fuel remained unchanged.

The electricity resources decreased by 5.3, natural gas – 13.5 per cent.

Legal professionals and protective service workers in law enforcement institutions

At the beginning of 2018, there were 726 judges working in the courts of Lithuania (excluding the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania), of whom 467 (or 64 per cent) women.

At the end of 2018, there were 2,213 lawyers, 252 notaries and 117 bailiffs in the country; 666 prosecutors were working in the prosecutor’s offices. There were 8.2 thousand police officers working the police, of whom 3.2 thousand (39 per cent) women.


Tourism

Based on provisional data, in January 2019, the accommodation establishments received 214.8 thousand tourists (by 9.1 per cent more than in January 2018), in February 2019 – 202.8 thousand (by 8.8 per cent more than in February 2018).


Social protection

Based on provisional data, in 2018, 21.5 thousand persons received home help and social care at home, which is by 0.9 per cent more than in 2017.

Based on provisional data, at the end of 2018, 6.1 thousand persons lived in care institutions for the elderly, 6.5 thousand persons  – in  care institutions for adults with disability.


Energy

Cogeneration means simultaneous generation in one process of thermal energy and electrical energy. In 2017, against 2016, electricity from cogeneration decreased by 1 per cent, while generation of thermal energy increased by 9.3 per cent. In 2017, against 2016, the amount of primary energy saved with regard to cogeneration increased by 4.7 per cent.

In March 2019, the minimum monthly wage totals EUR 555, the minimum hourly pay – EUR 3.39, the amount of basic social benefit – EUR 38.

In IV quarter 2018, average gross hourly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises excluded) totalled EUR 5.93 and, against III quarter 2018, increased by 5.5 per cent: in the public sector amounted to EUR 6.28 and increased by 9.2 per cent, in the private sector – EUR 5.77 and increased by 4 per cent.


Agricultural productions

In 2018, prices of goods and services acquired for the purpose of agricultural production decreased by 3.7 per cent, while prices of goods used for agricultural investments increased by 16.5 per cent.

Demographic indicators

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of March 2019, 2 790.8 thousand resident population were living in Lithuania, which is by 3.1 thousand (0.1 per cent) less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–February 2019, 4 053 babies were born, which is by 553 babies (12 per cent) less than in the same period of the previous year.

In January–February 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths decreased by 359 (4.6 per cent) and totalled 7 371.

In January–February 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of marriages increased by 4 couples, while the number of divorces increased by 37 couples.

In January–February 2019, 6 668 resident population emigrated from Lithuania, which is by 1 108 persons (19.9 per cent) more than in the same period of the previous year. Over the two month of the current year, 6 842 persons immigrated to Lithuania, which is by 2 377 (53.2 per cent) persons more than in January– February 2018.

In January– February 2019, most of the immigrants (63.3 per cent) were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In 2018, the number of recorded marriages and divorces totalled 19.7 thousand and 8.6 thousand respectively.

Against 2017, the number of marriages decreased by 1.5 thousand (7 per cent), while the number of divorces increased by 122 (1 per cent).

Over the last year, 43.8 divorces per 100 marriages were recorded (in 2017, 40.2).

  • In February 2019, goods carried by rail amounted to 4.3 million thousand tonnes, which is by 5.5 per cent more than in February 2018.

  • In February 2019, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 411.8 thousand, which is by 9.2 per cent more than in February 2018. In February 2019, in Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 4.8 million tonnes, which is by 6 per cent more than in February 2018.

  • In February 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons totalled 199, 8 people died, 233 people were injured. 12 road accidents were caused by drink-driving. 24 children were injured in 23 road accidents.


International migration

  • In 2018, 28.9 thousand people immigrated to Lithuania, which is 1.4 times (by 8.5 thousand) more than in 2017. This is the highest number of immigrants recorded since the Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence. In 2018, more than half (57.4 per cent) of the immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania.

  • In 2018, 32.2 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania. Compared to 2017, the number of emigrants decreased 1.5 times, or by 15.7 thousand.

  • In 2018, the number of male and female emigrants amounted to 17 thousand and 15.2 thousand respectively. Over the year, the number of emigrants per 1000 population decreased from 16.9 to 11.5.

  • In 2018, most residents of Lithuania chose the following countries as their destination of emigration:

The United Kingdom – 12.2 thousand (37.7 per cent), i.e. 1.8 times less than in 2017.

Germany – 3.2 thousand (9.8 per cent), i.e. by 23.4 per cent less than in 2017.

Norway – 3 thousand (9.3 per cent), i.e. 1.7 times less than in 2017.

Ireland – 2 thousand (6.3 per cent), i.e. 1.7 times less than in 2017.

  • The majority (83.8 per cent) of emigrants were born in Lithuania, 3.5 per cent – in Ukraine, 3.2 per cent – in Russia, 2.2 per cent – in the United Kingdom, 1.9 – in Belarus, 0.5 per cent – in India, 0.5 per cent – in Norway, 0.4 per cent – in Ireland, 0.3 per cent – in Kazakhstan.

  • More than half of male (67.2 per cent) and female (57.6 per cent) emigrants aged 18 and older had never been married, a quarter – were married.

  • In 2018, the average age of the male and female emigrants was 26 years.

  • In 2018, the number of male and female immigrants amounted to 20 thousand and 8.9 thousand respectively. Over the year, the number of immigrants per 1000 population increased from 7.2 to 10.3

  • In 2018, 16.6 thousand of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania returned to Lithuania, which is by 6.4 thousand more than in 2017. More than half (57.1 per cent) of them were men.

  • In 2018, the majority of the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania came back from:

The United Kingdom – 7.6 thousand, or 45.8 per cent.

Norway – 1.9 thousand, or 11.3 per cent.

Ireland – 1.2 thousand, or 7.4 per cent.

Germany – 1.2 thousand, or 7.3 per cent.

  • Compared to 2017, the number of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned from the United Kingdom and Ireland grew 1.5 times, from Norway and Germany – 1.9 times from each.

  • In 2018, the average age of male and female citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania was 29 and 28 years respectively.

  • In 2018, 12.3 thousand foreigners immigrated to the country (42.6 per cent of all immigrants), which is by 2.1 thousand (20.7 per cent) more than in 2017. The majority (85.3 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania were men.

  • Almost half (5.7 thousand, or 46.5 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania in 2018 were the citizens of Ukraine, 3.3 thousand (26.4 per cent) – Belarus, 780 (6.3 per cent) – the Russian Federation. Over the year, the number of citizens of Ukraine who immigrated to Lithuania grew by 32.1, Belarus – 20, Russia – 18.9 per cent.

In 2018, 39.6 thousand deaths were registered. Against 2017, the number of deaths decreased by 568, or 1.4 per cent.

In 2018, deaths of persons aged 65 and older accounted for 77.3 per cent (66.4 per cent of all deaths among men and 87.4 per cent of all deaths among women, 22.3 per cent of all deaths were deaths of persons aged 15–64 (33.1 per cent of all deaths among men and 12.2 per cent of all deaths among women).


Foreign direct investment

In IV quarter 2018, FDI income from non-resident investment in Lithuania amounted to EUR 261.6 million.

As of 31 December 2018, cumulative FDI in Lithuania amounted to EUR 15.5 billion. FDI per capita amounted to an average of EUR 5,548.

In IV quarter 2018, DI income earned by Lithuanian investors abroad amounted to EUR 34.5 million.

As of 31 December 2018, Lithuania’s cumulative DI abroad amounted to EUR 3.7 billion.

Trade turnover in the marketplaces

In IV quarter 2018, the turnover of trade in the markets totalled EUR 94.8 million, and, compared to III quarter 2018, decreased by 8.2 per cent at current prices. Trade in food products decreased by 12.8, non-food products – 3.1, plants and animals – 30 per cent.


Crop production

In 2018, compared to 2017, grain harvest decreased by 24.3 per cent and amounted to 4,379.4 thousand tonnes. The decrease in harvest was conditioned by a decrease in harvest of winter cereals (38.3 per cent) and legumes (46.3 per cent), although the harvest of summer cereals increased by 19 per cent.

In 2018, compared to 2017, rape harvest decreased by 20.2 per cent and amounted to 433.5 thousand tonnes.

In December  2018, exports of goods  amounted to EUR 2.30 billion, imports – EUR 2.46 billion. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin amounted to EUR 1.34 billion.

The foreign trade deficit of Lithuania amounted to EUR 0.16 billion.

Over the month, exports decreased by 13.4, imports – 12.1 per cent.

In 2018, against 2017, exports and imports increased by 7.3 and 8.6 per cent respectively.

In January 2019, most of the immigrants (67.1 per cent) were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

Under preliminary data, in 2018, the value of the total industrial production totalled EUR 22.6 billion at current prices and, against 2017, increased by 4.8 per cent at constant prices (calendar adjusted, increased by 5.1 per cent).


Employment and unemployment

According to the data of the population employment survey, in IV quarter 2018, against III quarter 2018, the number of employed persons mostly increased in health care and social work, as well as construction enterprises – by 9.9 thousand and 9.5 thousand respectively, while decreased in transport and storage, as well as accommodation and catering service enterprises (by 8.8 thousand each).

The employment rate of persons aged 20–64 increased by 0.2 percentage point and accounted for 78.3 per cent. The unemployment rate of persons of the above mentioned age group remained unchanged and stood at 6.1 per cent.

Employment and unemployment

In 2018, the number of employed persons mostly increased in manufacturing (by 8.7 thousand) and in the professional, scientific and technical activities (by 4.2 thousand), while decreased in agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors (by 3.2 thousand). In 2018, the most important increase was recorded in the number of employees and sellers involved in the service sector (by 6.5 thousand), while a drop was determined in the number of qualified workers engaged in agriculture, forestry and fishery activities (by 3.5 thousand).

In 2018, employment rate of persons aged 20–64 increased by 1.5 percentage points and accounted for 77.5 per cent. The unemployment rate of persons in this age group decreased by 0.8 percentage points and accounted for 6.4 per cent.


Job vacancies and occupied posts

At the end of IV quarter 2018, the number of job vacancies for employees totalled 16 thousand: in the Capital Region –8.4 thousand, in the Central and Western Lithuania region – 7.6 thousand. Over the quarter, the number of job vacancies decreased in both regions: in the Capital Region – by 1.5 thousand (14.9 per cent), in the Central and Western Lithuania region – by 1.2 thousand (13.5 per cent).

In IV quarter 2018, investments in tangible fixed assets totalled EUR 2 billion and, against IV quarter 2017, increased by 3 per cent at constant prices.

In 2018, material investments in the country totalled EUR 6.4 billion and, against IV quarter 2017, increased by 4.8 per cent.


Job vacancies and occupied posts

At the end of IV quarter 2018, the number of job vacancies, seasonally and calendar adjusted, totalled 17.8 thousand – by 0.3 thousand or by 1.9 per cent less than in III quarter 2018, and by 4.7 thousand or by 21 per cent less than a year ago.


Earnings

In IV quarter 2018, average gross (before employee tax) monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises excluded) totalled EUR 970.3 and compared to III quarter 2018 increased by 3.7 per cent: in the public sector – EUR 1020.4 and increased by 7.6, in the private sector – EUR 946.9 and increased by 1.8 per cent.

In IV quarter 2018, average net (after employee tax) monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises excluded) amounted to EUR 751.7 and compared to III quarter 2018 increased by 3.3 per cent: in the public sector it amounted to EUR 785.9 and increased by 6.7 per cent, in the private sector – EUR 735.6 and increased by 1.6 per cent.

In IV quarter 2018, against III quarter 2018, real earnings in the whole economy grew by 2.2 per cent: in the public sector – by 5.5, in the private sector – 0.5 per cent.


Energy

In December 2018, against December 2017, crude oil resources increased by 1.3 per cent, motor petrol resources - by 7.7 per cent, those of liquefied petroleum gas – by 4.8 per cent, while diesel fuel resources used for road transport decreased by 18.6 per cent. Over the said period, electricity resources increased by 1.5 per cent, natural gas resources – by 3.9 per cent.


Social protection

In 2018, public expenditure for social benefits increased by almost one fifth and totalled EUR 69.1 mln.

In 2018, expenditure for payments to families raising children by 3.5 times exceeded the same expenditure in 2017 and totalled EUR 238 million. This was mainly influenced by a child allowance which payment was commenced from January 2018.

It is forecasted that in 2020, against 2019, slaughtering of cattle (including exporting and importing thereof) will increase by 0.4 per cent.

It is forecasted that in I – II quarter 2020, against the respective period of 2019, slaughtering of pigs (including exporting and importing thereof) will decrease by 4 per cent.

As of 1 January 2019, the number of cattle raised in the country totalled 654 thousand (over the year decreased by 3.5 per cent), that of pigs – 572 thousand (decreased by 6.5 per cent) and sheep – 164 thousand (decreased by 3.2 per cent).

Agriculture

In 2018, against 2017, based on provisional data, an increase in the number of eggs collected in farmers and family farms, as well as in agricultural companies and enterprises accounted for more than 23 per cent, meat production increased by 1 per cent, milk yield decreased by 4 per cent

In December 2018, against December 2017, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 8.5 per cent.

the urban population totalled 1.87 million (67.1 per cent) resident population, rural population - 919.7 thousand (32.9 per cent);

the number of woman exceeded that of men by 203 thousand (1.50 million woman and 1.29 million men);

the number of children under 15 years of age totalled 422.1 thousand (15.1 per cent of the total population), while the number of people aged 65 years and over totalled 552.9 thousand (19.8 per cent);

the biggest number of elderly citizens was fixed in Utena and Alytus counties (24.2–23.3 per cent of the county population), while that of children - in Vilnius and Klaipėda counties (16.4–16.1 per cent).

In November 2018, in the accommodation establishments stayed 236 thousand tourists, or by 13 per cent more than in November 2017; the number of foreigners amounted to 114.6 thousand (by 14.4 per cent more). The hotel and motel room occupancy rate stood at 50.3 per cent and, against November 2017, grew by 2.1 percentage points.


Industry

Based on provisional data, in IV quarter 2018, against IV quarter 2017, industrial production increased by 5 per cent, refined petroleum products excluded – 6.3 per cent.
