The purpose of pre-primary education is to assist in preparing a child for successful learning at school. If a six-year-old or younger child reaches the age of six in the calendar year, she/he should receive pre-primary education. A one-year pre-primary education programme is carried out by preschool establishments or basic schools.

At the end of 2019, there were 739 preschool establishments operating in the country (of which 637 – in urban, 102 – in rural areas); and 419 general schools had preschool education groups integrated. They were attended by 121.7 thousand children, which is by 865 children more than in 2018. Child care groups of nursery schools were attended by 25 thousand (44 per cent) children aged 1–2.
