In III quarter 2020, general government deficit amounted to EUR 925.5 million.


Operating economic entities

At the beginning of 2021, there were 250,519 registered economic entities in Lithuania, which is by 10 thousand more than last year. Out of them, the number of operating economic entities amounted to 108,258.

Over 2020, there were 11,830 new small- and medium-sized enterprises registered, and 2,968 – unregistered in Lithuania.

The number of individual enterprises has decreased. At the beginning of 2021, there were 8,909 individual enterprises operating in Lithuania, which is by 6 per cent less than a year ago.

Deaths of permanent residents

4,329 deaths of permanent residents of Lithuania were registered in November. The majority of them died from circulatory system diseases (2,199 deaths, 50.8 per cent), malignancies (670 deaths, 15.5 per cent) and COVID–19 (578 deaths, 13.4 per cent)..


Asylum seekers

In November 2020, compared to October 2020, the number of asylum seekers grew more then 3 times – 62 applications were received.

In December 2020, the number of dismissed employees amounted to 42.1 thousand and, against November 2020, increased by 4.3 thousand. The number of hired employees stood at 29.3 thousand, which was by 8.9 thousand less than in the previous month.

  • In IV quarter 2020, goods transport by rail amounted to 14.6 million tonnes, which is by 4.6 per cent more than in the same period of 2019.

  • In December 2020, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 11.6 thousand, which is by 21.9 per cent less than in the same period of 2019.

  • In December 2020, the number of passengers who arrived at and departed from Lithuanian airports amounted to 51.4 thousand, which is by 89.2 per cent less than in the same period of last year.

  • In December 2020, the amount of goods handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal totalled 5.1 million tonnes, and compared to the respective period of 2019, increased by 12.9 per cent.

Purchase prices of agricultural products

In December 2020, against December 2019, purchase prices of agricultural products decreased by 0.2 per cent. Purchase prices for crop products increased by 4.9 per cent, those for animal products – decreased by 6.9 per cent.

Animal production

In 2020, compared to 2019, meat production (live wight) in the farms of the country increased by 0.5, the number of eggs collected – 0.9 per cent, while milk yield decreased by 1 per cent.

Economic entities in operation

At the beginning of 2021, there were 87,707 enterprises operating in Lithuania, which is by 564 more than a year ago. 

At the beginning of 2021, the enterprises operating in Lithuania were mainly engaged in wholesale and retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (9,729 and 9,608 respectively). 

At the beginning of 2021, there were 87,284 small and medium-sized enterprises operating in Lithuania and they accounted for 99.5 per cent of all enterprises.

In November 2020, compared to November 2019, road transport diesel resources increased by 2.2 per cent, while motor gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas resources decreased by 7.4 and 15 per cent respectively. Resources of crude oil decreased by 15.9 per cent. In the said period, resources of electricity and natural gas increased by 5.6 and 0.2 per cent respectively.

Based on provisional data, on 1 January 2021:

  • the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 795.2 thousand, i.e. by 1.1 thousand more than at the beginning of 2020;
  • the urban population totalled 1 million 885.9 thousand (67.5 per cent) resident population, rural population - 909.3 thousand (32.5 per cent);
  • the number of women in Lithuania was by 168.6 thousand higher than that of men (1 million 481.9 thousand and 1 million 313.3 thousand respectively). Women accounted for 53 per cent of the total resident population; there were 1 128 women per 1 000 men;
  • the number of children under 15 years of age totalled 421.8 thousand (15.1 per cent of the total resident population), people aged 15–64 – 1 million 816.3 thousand (65 per cent), the number of elderly persons (aged 65 years and over) – 557.1 thousand (19.9 per cent);
  • the biggest number of elderly persons was fixed in Utena, Alytus and Panevėžys counties (25–23.4 per cent of the county population), while that of children - in Vilnius and Klaipėda counties (16.4–16.1 per cent).

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of December 2020, 2 793.7 thousand resident population were living in Lithuania, which is by 0.4 thousand less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–November 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year:

  • The number of live births decreased by 2 981 babies (11.6 per cent) and stood at 22 726;
  • The number of deaths increased by 2 540 (7.2 per cent) and stood 37 607;
  • The number of marriages decreased by 4 091 couples and the number of divorces decreased by 1 279 couples;
  • The number of residents who emigrated from Lithuania increased by 3 333 persons (12.1 per cent) and stood at 30 776;
  • The number of persons who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 8 581 persons (1.2 times) and stood at 45 261.

In January–November 2020, 53 per cent of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In III quarter 2020, the revenue of the country's non-financial corporations from goods sold and services provided amounted to EUR 25.2 billion, which is by 17.5 per cent more than in I quarter 2020 and by 1.5 per cent more than in III quarter 2019.

In III quarter 2020, the pre-tax profit of non-financial corporations amounted to almost EUR 2 billion. Compared to the previous quarter, the pre-tax profit of non-financial corporations decreased by 7.5 per cent, compared to the same period of the previous year – increased by 13.2 per cent.

3,656 deaths of permanent residents of Lithuania were registered in October. The majority of them died from circulatory system diseases (1,894 deaths, 51.8 per cent), malignancies (694 deaths, 19 per cent) and due to external causes of death (207 deaths, 5.7 per cent).

In October 2020, against September 2020, the number of asylum seekers decreased more than 1.5 times – 19 applications were received.


Agricultural

In III quarter 2020, income from sales of agricultural companies amounted to EUR 403.1 million, which is by 7.4 per cent more than in III quarter 2019.


Services producer price indices

In III quarter 2020, compared to II quarter 2020, the largest price increase was observed for real estate, accounting and auditing services (7.3 per cent), tax consultancy (4.5 per cent), architectural and engineering activities, technical inspection and analysis (4 per cent), while decrease – services of travel agencies, tour operators, pre-booking services and related activities (11.8 per cent), accommodation activities (11.3 per cent), publishing (5.5 per cent).

Over a year (III quarter 2020, against III quarter 2019), the largest price increase was recorded for air transport service activities (19.3 per cent), architectural and engineering activities, technical inspection and analysis (8 per cent), security and investigation activities (5.7 per cent), decrease – transportation by pipelines (18.2 per cent), cleaning activities (14.4 per cent), and accommodation activities (13.7 per cent).

Social protection

In 2019, social protection expenditure totalled EUR 8 billion and, compared to 2018, grew by 11.4 per cent. In 2019, relative share of social protection expenditure made up 16.5 per cent of GDP (in 2018, 15.8 per cent).

In 2019, social protection expenditure per capita amounted to EUR 2,875, which is by EUR 302 (11.7 per cent) more than in 2018.

In 2019, against 2018, expenditure on pensions increased by EUR 238 million (7.5 per cent) and amounted to EUR 3.4 billion. In 2019, like in 2018, the share of such expenditure, compared to gross domestic product (GDP), made up 7 per cent.


Dismissed and hired employees

In November 2020, the number of dismissed employees amounted to 37.8 thousand and, against October 2020, decreased by 4.8 thousand, the number of hired employees stood at 38.2 thousand, which was by 10.4 thousand less than in the previous month.

Health care expenditure

In 2019, current health care expenditure totalled EUR 3.4 billion and, compared to 2018, grew by EUR 447 million or 15 per cent.

In 2019, health care expenditure per capita averaged EUR 1,223.8, which is by EUR 163 (15.3 per cent) more than in 2018.

In 2018, relative share of current health care expenditure amounted to 7 per cent (in 2018, 6.5 per cent) of gross domestic product.

The most important source of health care financing is compulsory health insurance contributions. In 2019, such contributions accounted for 39.9 per cent of total income of health care financing programmes.

Indicators of road accidents

In November 2020, the number of road accidents totalled 204, which is by 24.2 per cent less than in November 2019; 19 people died, 217 – were injured. The number of road accidents involving children totalled 13, which is by 61.8 per cent less than a year ago; 14 children were injured (by 65 per cent less). 21 road accidents were caused by drink-driving, or by 8.7 per cent less than in November 2019; 22 people were injured (by 46.3 per cent less).

Indicators of seaports

In November 2020, the number of passengers who arrived at and departed from Lithuanian airports amounted to 43.2 thousand, which is by 91.3 per cent less than in the same period of last year.

In November 2020, the amount of goods handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal totalled 4.6 million tonnes, and compared to the respective period of 2019, increased by 2.6 per cent.

Railway transport indicators

In October 2020, the number of passengers carried by rail stood at 300 thousand, and compared to October 2019, decreased by 34.1 per cent.

In November 2020, goods transport by rail amounted to 5 million tonnes, which is by 10 per cent more than in the same period of 2019.

Road transpor indicators

In November 2020, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 12.5 thousand, which is by 22.7 per cent less than in November 2019.

In 2018, the value added generated by the environment and environmentally friendly products sector accounted for 2.4 per cent of GDP; government final consumption expenditure on environmental protection accounted for 2.7 per cent of total expenditure.

  • The number of marriages decreased by 3 962 couples and the number of divorces decreased by 1 231 couples;
  • The number of residents who emigrated from Lithuania increased by 3 056 persons (12.1 per cent) and stood at 28 335;
  • The number of persons who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 8 121 persons (1.2 times) and stood at 41 585.

In January–October 2020, 49.3 per cent of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

Marine fisheries

In 2019, income of Lithuanian marine fishing fleet companies from fishing activities amounted to EUR 87.52 million, of which income from production of catches and landings accounted for 97 per cent (EUR 84.56 million). The bulk of income (EUR 81.66 million, or 93 per cent) was received from oceanic fishing companies operating in remote areas. The income from fishing activities of companies fishing in the Baltic Sea and its coast amounted to EUR 5.89 million. Compared to 2018, the total income of the marine fishing fleet increased by 33 per cent.

In 2019, expenditure of the Lithuanian fishing fleet, excluding depreciation of fixed assets, amounted to EUR 79.04 million; total fishing expenditure amounted to EUR 89 million and, compared to 2018, grew by 22 per cent.

The number of persons employed in the marine fishing fleet averaged 458.


Employment and unemployment

Based on the Labor Force Survey data, in III quarter 2020, the largest number of persons were employed in industry – 238.5 thousand (17.8 per cent of all persons employed) and trade – 215.8 thousand (16.1 per cent).

The employment rate of persons aged 20–64 stood at 75.5 per cent and compared to II quarter of this year decreased by 0.9 percentage points, compared to the respective period of 2019 – by 2.6 percentage points.

The unemployment rate of persons in the same age group stood at 9.5 per cent and compared to II quarter of this year increased by 0.7 percentage points, compared to the respective quarter of 2019 – by 3.3 percentage points.

Investment in tangible fixed assets

Based on provisional data 2019, investments in tangible fixed assets within the territory of the country amounted to EUR 9.1 billion, or by 13.4 per cent more than in 2018.

The biggest attention of investors is paid to Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties. Based on provisional data 2019, investment in Vilnius county accounts for about 40.2 per cent of the total investment in the country, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties – about 18.5 and 17.1 per cent respectively. The lowest investment is made in Tauragė and Utena counties – 1.4 and 1.6 per cent respectively.

Transport and communications

  • In III quarter 2020,  the number of passengers carried by all modes of transport totalled 64.7 million, which is by 26.1 per cent less than in the same period of 2019. Compared to III quarter 2019, passenger transport by inland waterways increased 3.6 times. The increase was determined by passenger transport via new route from Kaunas to Nida. A decrease was recorded in the number of passengers carried by the aircraft of Lithuanian airlines – 82.2 per cent, by road – 29.7 per cent, by sea – 27.3 per cent, and by rail – 26.3 per cent.

  • In October 2020, goods transport by rail amounted to 5 million tonnes, which is by 4.5 per cent more than in the same period of 2019.

  • In October 2020, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 14.2 thousand, which is by 20.8 per cent less than in October 2019.

  • In October 2020, the number of passengers who arrived at and departed from airports amounted to 77.2 thousand, which is by 87.6 per cent less than in the same period of last year.

  • In October 2020, the amount of goods handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal totalled 5.5 million tonnes, and compared to the respective period of 2019, increased by 15.5 per cent.

  • In October 2020, 279 road traffic accidents were registered, which is by 2.6 per cent more than in October 2019.  13 people were killed, 312 – injured in the road traffic accidents (by, respectively, 31.6 and 1 per cent less than in October 2019).

  • 48 accidents with children as casualties were recorded, which is by 37.1 per cent more than a year ago. 49 children were injured in such accidents, which is by 25.6 per cent more than in October 2019.

  • 20 road traffic accidents were caused by drunk persons (by 25 per cent more than a year ago), in which 23 persons were injured (against October 2019, the number remained unchanged).


Agriculture

In III quarter 2020, prices for goods and services consumed in agriculture decreased by 3.9, those for goods contributing to agricultural investment – 2 per cent.

Job vacancies and occupied posts
 

In III quarter 2020, the number of job vacancies in the Capital Region totalled 9.7 thousand, in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – 8.7 thousand. In III quarter 2020, against the previous quarter, an increase in the number of job vacancies was observed in both regions: in the Capital Region – by 0.6 thousand (6.1 per cent), in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – by 0.5 thousand (6.6 per cent).

In III quarter 2020, against II quarter 2020, the job vacancy rate in the Capital Region grew by 0.2 percentage points and stood at 1.8 per cent, in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – increased by 0.1 per cent and stood at 1.2 per cent.

In 2019, 70.2 per cent of all types of fuel and energy used in households was consumed for heating of dwellings, while 8.6 per cent – preparation of hot water, 6.7 per cent – cooking. In 2019, use of electricity for lighting and other household electrical appliances accounted for 14.5 per cent of all types of fuel and energy used in households.

  • In III quarter 2020, against II quarter 2020, real earnings in the whole economy grew by 4.5 per cent: in the public sector – by 2.6, in the private sector  – by 5.6 per cent.


Fuel and energy resources

In September 2020, compared to September 2019, motor gasoline resources increased by 25.7 per cent, road transport diesel resources – by 11.8 per cent, while liquefied petroleum gas resources decreased by 2.5 per cent. Resources of crude oil, electricity and natural gas decreased by 11.2, 2.4 and 2.1 per cent respectively.

In 2019, government budget appropriations or outlays on research and development amounted to EUR 152.4 million, which is by EUR 18.8 million (14 per cent) more than in 2018.

Gap between monthly earnings of women and men

In 2019, the gap between monthly gross earnings of women and men in the whole economy including individual enterprises, stood at 11.3 per cent and, against 2018, decreased by 2.1 percentage points. The gap between monthly gross earnings of women and men, against 2018, in the Capital region decreased by 1 percentage point, and stood at 12.9 per cent, in the Central and Western Lithuania region decreased 3.1 percentage points and totalled 10.3 per cent.

Harvest of agricultural crops

In 2020, grain harvest is expected to amount to 6 million 380 thousand tonnes, which is by 16 per cent more than in 2019. Wheat accounts for 70 per cent of the total grain harvest in the country.

In II quarter 2020, average gross hourly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises excluded) totalled EUR 8,52 and, against I quarter 2020, increased by 2.9 per cent: in the public sector amounted to EUR 9.29 and increased by 8.3 per cent, in the private sector – EUR 8.17 and increased by 0.2 per cent.

In September 2020 the minimum monthly wage is EUR 607, the minimum hourly pay – EUR 3.72.

In II quarter 2020, against I quarter 2020, the average number of employees in the whole economy decreased by 25.4 thousand (2 per cent): in the public sector – by 1.6 thousand (0.4 per cent), while in the private sector – by 23.8 thousand (2.6 per cent).

In Lithuania, tax wedge on labour cost decreased by 2.4 percentage points over a year and stood at 34.8 per cent in 2019.

In 2019, in Lithuania, unemployment trap stood at 87.4 per cent and, compared to 2018, increased by 0.6 percentage points.

In 2019, compared to 2018, the net earnings of spouses with 2 children, plus social benefits for family and children, increased by 14.9 per cent (when both spouses earn 100 per cent of the average gross earnings).

Demographic indicators

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of September 2020, 2 795.5 thousand resident population were living in Lithuania, which is by 1.4 thousand more than at the beginning of the year.

In January–August 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year:

  • The number of live births decreased by 2 425 babies (12.9 per cent) and stood at 16 409;

  • The number of deaths increased by 363 (1.4 per cent) and stood 26 508;

  • The number of marriages decreased by 3 720 couples and the number of divorces decreased by 1 191 couples;

  • The number of residents who emigrated from Lithuania increased by 2 060 persons (10.6 per cent) and stood at 21 443;

  • The number of persons who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 6 800 persons (1.3 times) and stood at 32 911.

In January–August 2020, 54.2 per cent of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In II quarter 2020, average gross mounthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) totalled EUR 1387.6 and, against I quarter 2020, increased by 1.3 per cent.

In II quarter 2020 average net monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to EUR 883 and, compared to I quarter 2020, increased by 1.1 per cent.

In II quarter 2020, against I quarter 2020, real earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) grew by 1.2 per cent.

Financial indicators of enterprises

In II quarter 2020, income of non-financial enterprises from the sale of goods and services rendered totalled EUR 21.4 billion, or by 7.1 per cent lower than in the first quarter this year and by 11.1 per cent lower than in II quarter last year.

In II quarter, pre-tax profit generated by non-financial enterprises totalled more than EUR 2 billion.

Pre-tax profit generated by non-financial enterprises, against the previous quarter, increased by 22.2 per cent, against the same quarter last year, increased by 5.2 per cent; profit generated by enterprises from financial and investment activities represented more than one third of the profit (39 per cent, or EUR 838 million).

Services producer price index (SPPI) and price changes

In II quarter 2020, against I quarter, the highest increase (23.2 per cent) was recorded for travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities, prices for accommodation services increased by 7.2 per cent, legal services – 5.3 per cent, but prices for transportation services via pipelines decreased by 10.7 per cent, cleaning services – 10.1 per cent, sea and coastal water transport – 4.8 per cent. 

Over the year (in II quarter 2020, against II quarter 2019), the highest rise in prices (20.3 per cent) was observed for air transport services, prices for legal activities increased by 7.9 per cent, and security and investigation activities – 6.2 per cent. The biggest drop in prices was recorded for transportation services via pipelines – 17 per cent, accommodation activities – 14.4 per cent and sea and coastal water transport – 10.1 per cent. 

Asylum seekers

In July 2020, against June 2020, the number of asylum seekers decreased by 1 (22 applications were received).

Membership organisations

In 2019, against 2018, the number of members of trade unions increased by 3.5 per cent and, at the end of the year, amounted to 89.6 thousand members: the number of members of political parties decreased by 1.8 per cent and totalled 110.7 thousand.

In II quarter 2020, income from sales of agricultural companies (enterprises) amounted to EUR 225.9 million, or 11 per cent less than in II quarter 2019.

  • In August 2020, 212.4 thousand passengers arrived at or departed from the airports, which is by 65.8 per cent less than in the same period of last year.

In June 2020, the number of asylum seekers was the same as in May – 23 applications received.

Employment and unemployment

Under the data of the population employment survey, in II quarter 2020, the majority of the population worked in industry – 242.9 thousand (18 per cent of all employed persons) and trade – 225.9 thousand (16.7 per cent).

The employment rate of persons aged 20–64 accounted for 76.4 per cent and, against I quarter 2020, decreased by 1.9 percentage points, against the respective period in 2019,  2 percentage points.

The unemployment rate of persons in this age group accounted for 8.8 per cent and, against I quarter 2020, increased by 1.5 percentage points, against the respective period in 2019 – 2.5 percentage points.

In July 2020, the number of dismissed employees amounted to 43.8 thousand and, against June 2020, decreased by 8.1  thousand, the number of hired employees stood at 53.1 thousand, which was by 2.7 thousand more than in the previous month.

Agricultural production

In II quarter 2020, prices of goods and services acquired for the purpose of agricultural production decreased by 14.1 per cent, prices of goods used for agricultural investments increased by 10 per cent.

Financial and insurance enterprises

In 2019, commercial banks earned EUR 479.4 million net interest income (by EUR 38.3 million, or 8.7 per cent more than in 2018) and EUR 320.2 million net profit (in 2018, EUR 329.2 million).

In 2019, Income of financial leasing enterprises totalled EUR 105.9 million (by 32.9 per cent more than in 2018). Net profit earned by the above mentioned enterprises amounted to EUR 31.9 million (by 15.6 per cent more than in 2018).

In 2019, gross premiums written in the life insurance market totalled EUR 317.2 million and, against 2018, increased by 8 per cent. In 2019, gross premiums written in the non-life insurance market totalled EUR 822 million, or 6.9 per cent more than in 2018.

In 2019, life insurance enterprises earned EUR 16.6 million net profit, or by 9.2 per cent less than in 2018. Net profit earned by non-life insurance enterprises amounted to EUR 28.9 and, against 2018, increased by 26.5 per cent.

Transport and communications

In II quarter 2020, traffic volume by all modes of transport totalled 43 million passengers, or by 55.8 per cent less than in II quarter 2019.

In July 2020, traffic volume by railway transport totalled 4.4 million tonnes of cargo, or by 7.9 per cent less than in the same period of 2019.

In July 2020, 13.2 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country; that is by 21.2 per cent less compared to July 2019.

In July 2020, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 351, by 15.1 per cent more than in July 2019.

12 people died (less than half) and 412 people were injured  (by 13.5 per cent more).

The number of road accidents involving children totalled 63, by 26  per cent more against the same period in 2019, 70 children were injured (by 14.8 per cent more). 

22 road accidents were caused by drink-driving, or compared to July 2019, by 29.4 per cent more, 27 people were injured, or by 8 per cent more.

In July 2020, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 167.4 thousand – that is by 71.9 per cent less than in the same period last year.

In July 2020, in Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 4.4 million tonnes and, against the same period in 2019, decreased  by 4.5 per cent.

Foodstuff consumption per capita

In 2019, the consumption per capita of cereals and cereal products was 111 kg/capita, or by 2 kg more than in 2018.

Job vacancies

In II quarter 2020, the number of job vacancies in the Capital Region amounted to 9.2 thousand, in the Central and Western Lithuania region – 8.1 thousand. Over II quarter, the number of job vacancies increased in both regions, in the Capital Region – by 0.9 thousand ( 11.2 per cent), in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – 1.4 thousand (20.2 per cent).

In June 2020, motor gasoline resources, as in June 2019, remained the same, diesel fuel used for road transport decreased by 3.3 per cent, liquefied petroleum gas – by 14 per cent, crude oil resources – 31.9 per cent.

Electrical energy resources, over the said period, decreased by 6.6 per cent, while natural gas resources increased by 5.8 per cent.

Investment in tangible fixed assets

In II quarter 2020, investment in tangible fixed assets in the country totalled EUR 1.4 billion, and, compared to II quarter 2019, increased by 18.3 per cent at constant prices.

Investment in construction and acquisition of residential buildings totalled EUR 226 million, which is by 6.1 per cent less than in II quarter 2019.

In II quarter 2020, average gross (before employee tax) monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises excluded) totalled EUR 1398.5 and, compared to I quarter 2020, increased by 1.3 per cent: in the public sector – EUR 1514.6 (increased by 6.5 per cent), in the private sector – EUR 1343.9 (decreased by 1.4 per cent).

In II quarter 2020, average net (after employee tax) monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises excluded) amounted to EUR 889.2 and, compared to I quarter 2020, increased by 1.1 per cent: in the public sector – EUR 955.5 (increased by 5.8 per cent), in the private sector – EUR 858 (decreased by 1.2 per cent).

At the end of 2019, the number of social assistance pension recipients stood at 44.1 thousand; compared to 2018, it decreased by 11.3 per cent.

Energy

In 2019, the share of renewable energy sources in the final consumption of electricity accounted for 25.47 per cent.

Solid biofuel, such as firewood and wood waste and agricultural waste for fuel, has the biggest potential in renewable energies, in 2019, 69.8 per cent of the total heat energy produced at power stations and boiler rooms, as well as 24.4 per cent of the total electricity produced at power plants was generated from the aforementioned biofuel.

In 2019, wind farms generated 1.5 TWh of electricity, which represented slightly more than one-third of the total electricity produced in our country.

  • In 2018, there were 5,546 enterprise groups in Lithuania, that is by 6 per cent more than in 2017.  3,285 of them were international enterprise groups, and only 595 (18 per cent) – Lithuanian controlled enterprises.

  • Most (1,428, or 26 per cent) of the enterprises acting in Lithuania in 2018 were engaged in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. 

  • Out of 34,267 enterprises and natural persons that started their activities in 2008, only 3,739 (or almost 11 per cent) continue their activity until 2018.

In 2019, against 2018, the number of medical specialists in the health sector of Lithuania decreased: medical practitioners - by 0.88 per cent, dental practitioners - 3.95 per cent, nurses and midwives - 0.68 per cent, pharmacists - 6.63 per cent.

In 2019, against 2018, in Lithuania, the number of induced abortions decreased by 11 per cent.


Road transport

In 2019, national road network length totalled 21.2 thousand km and, against 2018, did not change. Local road network length amounted to  63.8 thousand km and, compared to 2018, decreased by 0.8 per cent.


ICT use in enterprises

At the beginning of 2020, 4.6 per cent of enterprises used industrial and service robots (at the beginning of 2018, 3.2 per cent). Industrial robots were used by 3, service robots – 2.6 per cent of enterprises (in 2018, 2.4 and 1.8 per cent respectively).


Dismissed and hired employees

In June 2020, in the whole economy, 51.9 thousand employees were dismissed (by 14.1 thousand more than in May) and 50.4 thousand employees were hired (by 16.9 thousand more).

Compared to June 2019, the number of hired employees decreased by 11.4 per cent.


Investment in tangible fixed assets

Based on data of 2018, investment in tangible fixed assets in the country totalled EUR 8.1 billion, which is by 10.4 per cent more than in 2017.

Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties are the most popular counties in terms of investment. Based on provisional data of 2018, investment in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties accounted for, respectively, 44.5, around 19 and 12 per cent of the total investment in the country. The smallest investment was recorded for Tauragė county – 1.4 per cent of the total investment.

  • In II quarter 2020, freight traffic volume by railway transport totalled 12.3 million tonnes of cargo, or by 7.7 per cent less than in the same period of 2019.

  • In June 2020, 18.5 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country; that is by 17 per cent more compared to the same period last year.

  • In June 2020, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 42.2 thousand – that is by 93 per cent less than in the same period last year.

  • In June 2020, in Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 4.2 million tonnes and, against the same period in 2019, decreased  by 14.5 per cent.


Economic entities

In June 2020, 40.5 per cent of enterprises registered in Lithuania had at least 1 employee, or by 0.7 per cent less than in June last year.

Population

At the beginning of 2020, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.1 thousand, i.e. by 94 persons less than at the beginning of 2019.

At the beginning of 2020, the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania accounted for 97.6 per cent of the country’s resident population, those of Ukraine – 0.8 per cent, Belarus – 0.6 per cent, Russian – 0.4 per cent.

Most residents of the country (2 million 641.5 thousand, or 94.5 per cent) were born in Lithuania, 152.6 thousand (5.5 per cent) – abroad.

Almost half (49.1 per cent) of the resident population aged 15 and older were married, 10.5 per cent were divorced, 8.1 per cent – wido­wed. The number of divorced women was 1.9 times, that of widowed women – 7.5 times higher than that of men.

In 2019, there were 9.8 live births per 1 000 popula­tion (in 2018, 10). The total fertility rate decreased since 1.63 (in 2018) to 1.61 (in 2019). In 2019, the mean age of women at the birth of the first child was 28 years (in 2018, 27.8 years).

In 2019, the crude death rate (the number of deaths per 1 000 population) stood at 13.7 (in 2018, 14.1). In 2019, the number of infant deaths per 1 000 live births was 3.3 (in 2018, 3.4).

In 2019, life expectancy at birth for men was 71.5 years, for women – 81 years (in 2018, 70.9 for men and 80.6 for women respectively).  In 2019 the difference between life ex­pectan­cy at birth for men and for women was 9.5 (2018 – 9.7 years).

In 2019 and 2018, there were 7 marriages per 1000 population and 3.1 divorces. In 2019, the number of divorces per 100 marriages stood at 44.5 (in 2018, 43.8). The ratio of marriages to divorces is more precisely reflected by the total divorce rate, which is calculated taking into account the duration of the previous marriage. If the previous year’s ratio does not change, it is probable that, out of 100 couples, 39 will get divorced.

Livestock production, 1 July 2020

As of 1 July 2020 (against 1 July 2019), meat production (live weight) in farmers and family farms, as well as in agricultural companies and enterprises increased by 5 per cent, milk yield – 1 per cent, a 3 per cent increase in the number of eggs collected was recorded over the aforementioned period.


Purchase prices of agricultural products

In July 2020, compared to July 2019, purchase prices of agricultural products decreased by 2.9, those of crop products – 0.6, those of animals and animal products – 6.6 per cent.


Social protection

In 2019, expenditure on state social insurance sickness benefits amounted to EUR 308.8 million or by 1 per cent more than in 2018; over a year, the number of paid sickness days decreased by 5.7 per cent.

In 2019, compared to 2018, expenditure on state social insurance maternity/paternity benefits grew by 6.1 per cent; over a year, expenditure on child care benefits (until the child is 2 years of age) grew by 5.2 per cent.

Production of agricultural products in regions, counties and municipalities, 2019

In 2019, in the national economy, the major share (300.7 thousand tonnes) of meat production (as other livestock products) was produced in the Central and Western Lithuania Region, 66 thousand tons - in the Capital Region. 1 million 501.7 thousand tonnes of milk came from the Central and Western Lithuania Region, 49.4 thousand tonnes - from the Capital Region, 614.9 million and 243.3 million eggs were collected in the Central and Western Lithuania Region and in the Capital region respectively.


Energy

In May 2020, against May 2019, diesel fuel used for road transport decreased by 2.7 per cent, liquefied petroleum gas – by 24.6 per cent, crude oil resources – 16.2 per cent, motor gasoline resources increased by 33 per cent. Electrical energy resources, over the said period, decreased by 3.4 per cent, while natural gas resources increased by 43.2 per cent.

In 2019, 5.5 thousand reports (cases) of violence against children (including domestic violence) were received, 5.1 thousand children possibly suffered (in 2018, 4.9 and 4.4 thousand respectively). 2.8 thousand children (in 2018, 3.3 thousand) possibly suffered from domestic violence.

Scrap metal

In 2019, against 2018, ferrous metal scrap increased by 7 per cent, non-ferrous metal scrap decreased by 10.6 per cent.

In 2019, the major part of ferrous metal scrap consisted of other sources of scrap formation (scrapped industrial purpose products, semi-manufactured products, metal on packaging, etc.) and, against 2018, increased by 2.3 per cent.

In 2019, the amount of non-ferrous metal scrap from other sources of scrap formation and scrap purchased from people decreased: against 2018, from other sources of scrap decreased by 7.4 per cent, purchased from people – 26.2 per cent. In 2019, against 2018, the formation of amortisation non-ferrous metal increased by 14.7 per cent.

In 2019, copper and brass amortisation scrap increased twice.

In I quarter 2020, against IV quarter 2019, the highest increase (14.3 per cent) was recorded for air transport services, data processing, hosting and related activities; prices for  web portal services increased by 6.1 per cent, other postal and courier activities – 5.3 per cent, but prices for travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities decreased by 10.7 per cent, postal services under universal service –  6.6 per cent, telecommunications services – 5.2 per cent.

Over the year (in I quarter 2020, against I quarter 2019), the highest rise in prices (36.9 per cent) was observed for accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities; tax advisory services – 7.9 per cent, management consultancy activities – 6.5 per cent. The biggest drop in prices was recorded for travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities – 22.2 per cent,  transportation services via pipelines – 15 per cent., accommodation services – 8.1 per cent.


Asylum seekers

In April 2020, compared to March 2020, the number of asylum seekers decreased 1.5 times (6 applications were received).

Dismissed and hired employees

In May 2020, the number of dismissed employees amounted to 37.8 thousand and, against April 2020, the number of employees remained almost unchanged, the number of hired employees stood at 33.5 thousand, which was by 10.4 thousand more than in the previous month.

In May 2020, compared to May 2019, the number of hired employees decreased by 39,7 per cent.

Research and development

In 2019, expenditure on scientific research and experimental development (R&D) works in the higher education and in the government sectors totalled EUR 275.8 million, i.e. by EUR 27.8 million (11.2 per cent) more than in 2018.

Based on the provisional gross domestic product (GDP) estimate, in 2019, R&D expenditure in the higher education and government sectors accounted for 0.57 per cent of GDP (in 2018, 0.55 per cent).

The major proportion (EUR 154.2 million, or 55.9 per cent) of the total R&D expenditure according to the funding sources fell within the government (State budget), foreign funds accounted for 31.4 per cent.

In 2019, provisional number of employees engaged in R&D activities in the institutions of the higher education and government sectors totalled 8.2 thousand and, against 2018, increased by 6.9 per cent.

Provisional number of investigators participating in R&D activities, against 2018, increased by 6.2 per cent (from 6,106 to 6,483 investigators).

In 2019, freight traffic volume by railway transport totalled 55.2 million tonnes of cargo, or by 2.8 per cent less than in 2018, transport of passengers – 5.5 million, or by 6.7 per cent more than in 2018.

In 2019, 1 million 499 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country; that is by 4.8 per cent more than in 2018, of which passenger cars – 1 million 302 thousand, or by 6.1 per cent more.


Gender pay gap

In 2019, the gender pay gap in the whole economy, excluding agriculture, forestry and fishing enterprises, stood at 12.4 per cent and, against 2018, decreased by 0.6 percentage points.


In 2019, against 2018, meat production (by live weight) in the national economy decreased by 0.3 per cent, milk yield  – 1.3 per cent, collection of eggs – 3.8 per cent.

In April 2020, transport of passengers by rail totalled 109.1 thousand, or by 78.7 per cent less than in the same period of 2019. The decrease was determined by the suspension of transport of passengers on international routes due to the imposed quarantine.

In May 2020, traffic volume by railway transport totalled 4.2 million tonnes of cargo, or by 7.3 per cent less than in the same period of 2019.

In May 2020, 11.2 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country; that is by 31.7 per cent less compared to the same period in 2019.

In May 2020, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 4.2 thousand – that is by 99.3 per cent less than in the same period last year.

In May 2020, in Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 4.5 million tonnes and, against the same period in 2019, decreased  by 4.7 per cent.

Electrical energy resources, over the said period, decreased by 8.8 per cent, while natural gas resources increased by 8.5 per cent.

Air quality

In 2019, in Kaunas Petrašiūnai air quality research station, the concentration of particulate matter PM10 exceeded the daily limit value by 40 days, i.e. exceeded the limit set by the legislation (daily limit (50 µg/m3) cannot exceed 35 days per calendar year), and, compared to 2018, increased by 25 per cent.

In the air quality research stations in Žirmūnai (Vilnius) and Šilutės Plentas (Klaipėda), there was a decrease in cases when the concentration of particulate matter PM10 exceeded the daily limit, compared to 2018 (59 and 62 per cent respectively). In 2019, a decrease in this indicator was also observed in many other air quality research stations.

Demographic indicators

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of May 2020, 2 793.3 thousand resident population were living in Lithuania, which is by 1.1 thousand less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–April 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year:

  • The number of live births decreased by 935 babies (11.2 per cent) and stood at 7 448;
  • The number of deaths decreased by 267 (1.9 per cent) and stood 13 509;
  • The number of marriages decreased by 642 couples and the number of divorces decreased by 429 couples;
  • The number of residents who emigrated from Lithuania increased by 1 460 persons (15.6 per cent) and stood at 10 806;
  • The number of persons who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 4 462 persons (1.4 times) and stood at 15 809.

In January–April 2020, almost half (46.7 per cent) of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

Greenhouse gas emissions
 

In 2018, In Lithuania, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere amounted to 20,267 kt, which is by 1.7 per cent less than in 2017. The largest emissions were observed for energy sector – 58.8 per cent of total GHG emissions in 2018. The second largest in terms of GHG emissions was the agricultural sector (21.1 per cent).  In the industrial sector, GHG emissions accounted for 15.6, in the waste sector – 4.5 per cent of total GHG emissions.


Education

At the beginning of the 2019–2020 academic year, there were 41 higher education establishments: 19 universities and 22 colleges.

At the beginning of the 2019–2020 academic year, the number of students at universities and colleges stood at 73.0 thousand and 32.9 thousand respectively. Compared to the 2018–2019 academic year, the number of students at universities and colleges decreased by 4.3 thousand (5.6 per cent) and 1 thousand (3 per cent) respectively.

In 2019, professional bachelor’s degree was awarded to 7.4 thousand college graduates. At universities, the bachelor’s, master’s and Doctor of Science (Arts) degrees were awarded to 10.1 thousand, 6.5 thousand and 287 students respectively.

685 graduates completed professional studies and were awarded professional qualification (412 – completed residency, 273 – pedagogical studies).

The number of foreign students studying a full study programme at universities of the country amounted to 6.2 thousand and accounted for 5.5 per cent of total number of university students.  In colleges, the number of foreign students totalled 481.


Greenhouse gas emissions

In 2019, the structure of pollutant emissions remained similar as in the previous year.

CO (carbon monoxide) accounted for the largest share of total emissions – 37.44 per cent (in 2018, 38.74 per cent), NMVOC (volatile organic compounds) – 22.35 per cent (in 2018, 20.9 per cent), SOx (sulphur dioxide) – 15.74 per cent (in 2018, 16.49 per cent) and NOx (nitrogen oxides) – 13.67 per cent (in 2018, 12.86 per cent).

In 2019, municipal budget expenditure totalled EUR 3.4 billion.

In 2019, 2,352 tonnes of plant protection products were placed on the Lithuanian market, against 2018, by 13 per cent more.

Employment

Under the data of the population employment survey, in I quarter 2020, the majority of the population worked in industry – 261.1 thousand (18.8 per cent of all employed persons) and trade – 222 thousand (16 per cent).

The employment rate of persons aged 20–64 accounted for 78.3 per cent and, against IV quarter 2019, remained almost the same, against the respective period in 2019, increased by 0.3 percentage point.

The unemployment rate of persons in this age group accounted for 7.3 per cent and, against IV quarter 2019, increased by 0.9 percentage point, against the respective period in 2019 – by 0.7 percentage point.

In 2019, 4,915 reports about accidents at work resulting in injuries of employees were recorded. 4,745 mild, 125 severe and 39 fatal accidents occurred in enterprises. In 2018, there were 4,440 reports about accidents at work resulting in injuries of employees, of which 4,276 were mild, 126 – severe, 38 – fatal.

  • In March 2020, transport of passengers by rail totalled 215.6 thousand, or by 52.7 per cent less than in the same period of 2019. The decrease was determined by the suspension of transport of passengers on international routes due to the imposed quarantine.

  • In I quarter 2020, traffic volume by all modes of transport totalled 81.9 million passengers, or by 13.6 per cent less than in I quarter 2019. The number of passengers carried by inland waterway transport, against I quarter 2019, increased by 35.6 per cent. The number of passengers carried by Lithuanian airlines decreased by 29.2 per cent, by sea – 22.8 per cent, by rail – 19.4 per cent and by road transport – 13.6 per cent.

  • In April 2020, traffic volume by railway transport totalled 4 million tonnes of cargo, or by 7.7 per cent less than in the same period of 2019.

  • In April 2020, 7.6 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country; that is by 55.8 per cent less compared to the same period in 2019.

  • In April 2020, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 131, by 48.6 per cent less than in April 2019. 2 people died (71.4 per cent less) and 157 people were injured  (by 49.5 per cent less).

  • The number of road accidents involving children totalled 12, by 74.5  per cent less, 14 children were injured (by 72 per cent less).

  • 23 road accidents were caused by drink-driving, or by 21.1 per cent more, 28 people were injured, or by 12.5 per cent less.

  • In April 2020, in Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 3.9 million tonnes and, against the same period in 2019, decreased  by 12.2 per cent.

  • In April 2020, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 1.7 thousand – that is by 99.7 per cent less than in the same period last year.  

Number of employees, October

  • In October, in the Capital region, the number of women at the main workplace exceeded that of men (241 thousand men, 250 thousand women), while in the Central and Western Lithuania region, the number of women was lower than that of men (336 thousand men, 320 thousand women).

Education and educational attainment of the population

At the beginning of the 2019–2020 academic year, 459.4 thousand pupils and students (almost every sixth Lithuanian citizen) studied in educational establishments of our country. This number, against the 2018–2019 academic year, decreased by 8.3 thousand, or 1.8 per cent.

The number of pupils and students in private schools amounted to 26.3 thousand, or 5.7 per cent of the total number. Over the year, this number increased by 1.6 thousand (6.4 per cent).

In 2019, 12.1 thousand students finished vocational schools and obtained vocational education. Higher education institutions educated 24.8 thousand higher education specialists.


Fertility

In 2019, 27.4 thousand live births were registered; compared to 2018, the number of live births decreased by 756 babies, or 2.7 per cent.

In 2019, the major portion (45.6 per cent) of live births were first order births, second order births – 38.9 per cent, third and higher order births – 15.4 per cent (in 2018, 44.3 per cent, 40 per cent, and 15.7 per cent respectively).

In 2019, the number of live births outside marriage amounted to 7.4 thousand, or 26.9 per cent of all live births (in 2018, 7.4 thousand, or 26.4 per cent).

Population and its composition

At the beginning of 2020, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.1 thousand, i.e. by 94 less than at the beginning of 2019.

At the beginning of 2020, 1 million 882.5 thousand (67.4 per cent) residents of Lithua­nia lived in ci­ties and towns, 911.6 thou­­sand (32.6 per cent) – in rural areas.

The number of women in Lithuania was by 185.5 thousand higher than that of men (1 million 489.8 thou­­­sand and 1 million 304.3 thousand res­pec­ti­vely). Wo­men accounted for 53.3 per cent of the total resident popu­lation; there were 1 142 women per 1 000 men.

At the beginning of 2020, the number of children (aged 0–14) amounted to 422.7 thousand, or 15.1 per cent of the total number of resident population, people aged 15–64 – 1 million 815.4 thousand, or 65 per cent, elderly resident popu­lation (aged 65 and older) – 556 thousand, or 19.9 per cent. The number of children was by 24 per cent lower than that of elderly people.

In 2019, the number of registered  divorces totalled 8.7 thousand, which is by 43 (0.5 per cent) more than in 2018. Last year there were 44.5 divorces per 100 marriages (in 2018– 43.8).

At the end of 2019, the number of acting pre-school educational establishments totalled 739 (in urban areas – 637, in rural  – 102), and pre-school educational groups were set up in 419 general schools.

121.7 thousand children were educated according to pre-school educational programmes.

Child care nursery groups were attended by 25.2 thousand children under 2 years of age, or 44 per cent of this group population.

In 2019, the number of acting non-state pre-school educational establishments totalled 146, which were attended by 8.6 thousand children, or by 10.8 per cent more than in 2018.

In 2019, against 2018, the area of crops increased by 7 per cent– 2 million 144.9 thousand ha.

The largest increase was determined in the area of winter barely (2.6 times) and hemp grown for fibre (2.4 times).

Area of crops for the production of grain accounted for 70 per cent of the total crop area, plants intended for processing – 13, plants for feed – 14, potatoes and field vegetables – 2 per cent of the crop area.

At the beginning of the 2019–2020 academic year, the number of pupils in educational establishments providing education under general upper-secondary education programmes totalled 325.7 thousand.

In autumn 2019, the number of first grade pupils amounted to 29.8 thousand children, or by 1,146 (4 per cent) more than in 2018.

In 2019, lower secondary education certificates were received by 24.8 thousand students (in 2018, 25.1 thousand), general certificates of secondary education were awarded to 21.5 thousand school-leavers (in 2018, 23.1 thousand).

At the beginning of the 2019–2020 academic year, the number of teachers and head teachers in general schools totalled 28.6 thousand, or by 0.5 thousand (1.6 per cent) less than in the 2019–2020 academic year.

In 2019, the number of children adopted by Lithuanian citizens amounted to 74, by foreign citizens – 34 (in 2018, 103 and 56 respectively).
 

At the end of 2019, the number of children eligible for adoption totalled 1,125 (in 2018, 1,243), and 165 families were included into the Registry of Citizens of the Republic of Lithuania, Who Want to adopt and Live in the Republic of Lithuania (in 2018, 153).


Use of information technologies in state and municipal authorities and agencies

At the beginning of 2020, 75.6 per cent of state and municipal authorities and agencies provided electronic services via the Internet (information about their functions and services provided is available on their website).

72.9 per cent of the authorities provided possibility to download various document forms, 47.4 per cent – to submit the filled ones, 39.5 per cent of authorities indicated that they provided services in electronic manner.

People with disabilities

In 2019, 10.6 thousand persons of working age were for the first time established a reduced level of capacity for work. Compared to 2018, this figure decreased by 5.6 per cent.

In 2019, 1,960 children under 18 were for the first time recognised as disabled (in 2018, 1,863), every second of them - due to mental and behavioural disorders.


Religious communitie

Under the data of the Ministry of Justice, at the end of 2019, the number of religious communities, groups and other religious organisations, registered and entered into the Register of Legal Entities, totalled 1,319.

Catholic religious communities accounted for a major share thereof (i.e. 902 communities, or 68 per cent).

  • In 2019, there were 107 museums operating in the country. Over the last year, the number of museum visitors reached 5.6 million, or by 563 thousand (11.2 per cent) more than in 2018. The highest number of visitors was received by the Lithuanian Sea Museum (681 thousand), National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (598 thousand), Trakai History Museum (441 thousand), Lithuanian National Museum (389 thousand).

  • In 2019, Lithuanian cinemas received 4 million cinemagoers. Over the year, one cinemagoer would visit a cinema, on average, 1.4 times. Last year, cinemas and cultural centres and branches operating in the country showed movies in 98 cinema halls. Cinema box office revenue decreased from EUR 22.6 million to EUR 21.6 million, or by 4.3 per cent.

  • In 2019, there were 51 theatres in the country: 13 public and 38 private, which gave 7.1 thousand performances, the number of theatregoers totalled 1.5 million. Over the year, the number of performances amounted to 121 new or renewed performances. In 2019, 7 public concert agencies arranged 835 concerts in the country and abroad. In 2019, the number of visitors totalled 396 thousand.

In 2019, compared to 2018, the number of children aged 7–17 who do not attend school decreased by 1.6 per cent, while the number of those who departed abroad increased by 12.2 per cent.

In the 2019–2020 academic year, the number of students admitted to vocational schools totalled 12.9 thousand (total number of students in them – 27.8 thousand).

In the 2019–2020 academic year, the majority of students in vocational schools chose engineering and engineering trades programmes – 7.5 thousand, personal services programme – 6.6 thousand, architecture and construction programmes – 3.6 thousand, business and administration programmes – 2.8 thousand.


Social protection

In 2019, the average state social insurance old-age pension totalled EUR 344.42 or, against 2018, increased by 7.9 per cent.

In 2019, the average annual number of state social insurance anticipated old-age pension beneficiaries totalled 596 thousand or, against 2018, by 3.1 per cent higher than in 2018.


Tourism

In February 2020, the number of nights spent in accommodation establishments totalled 478.4 thousand, or by 6.9 per cent more than a year ago, the number of nights spent by arriving foreigners amounted to 198.1 thousand, or by 7.4 more.


Economic entities in operation

At the beginning of 2020, there were 129,232 local units in Lithuania; 48,398 of them performed their activities in the Capital region, 80,834 – in the Central and Western Lithuania region.

At the beginning of 2020, one quarter (27 per cent) of all the local units acting in Lithuania were engaged in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.


Livestock production, 1 April 2020

As of 1 April 2020 (against 1 April 2019), meat production (live weight) in farmers and family farms, as well as in agricultural companies and enterprises increased by 4 per cent, milk yield – 2 per cent. In February 2020, against February 2019, crude oil resources increased by 15.7 motor gasoline – 8.6 per cent, diesel fuel used for road transport – by 10 per cent, while liquefied petroleum gas decreased by 6.6 per cent.

Electrical energy resources, over the said period, increased by 8.8 per cent, natural gas resources – by 8.1 per cent.


Libraries

In 2019, compared to 2018, the number of visits to the country’s libraries decreased by 1.3 per cent and amounted to 21,236,123, with an average of 7.6 visits per capita (in 2018, 7.7 per cent).

In 2019, the number of registered users per one library decreased by 1.03 per cent and amounted to 479 (in 2018, 484).

In 2019, the number of documents stored in the country’s libraries decreased by 3.75 per cent and amounted to 49,539,445 physical units of various types of documents (in 2018, the number stood at 51,467,718).


Deaths by cause of death

In 2019, the indicator of mortality of Lithuania’s population decreased to 13.7 per 1,000 population (in 2018, 14.1). The main causes of death remained the same – diseases of the circulatory system, malignant tumours and external causes of death – and accounted for 81.8 per cent of all causes of death.

Based on provisional data, in 2019, 21 thousand elderly and disabled people received social services at home (or by 16.7 per cent more than in 2018).


Legal Specialists (Professionals) and Security Staff in the Law Enforcement Authorities

At the end of 2019, the number of judges in Lithuanian courts (the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania excluding) totalled 745, 479 (64 per cent) of them – women.

At the end of 2019, there were 2,245 lawyers, 246 notaries public and 113 bailiffs in our country, the number of prosecutors in the prosecutor's offices amounted to 659. 8 thousand police officers worked in the police, 3.2 thousand (40 per cent) of them - women.

Yield of orchards and berry plantations

In 2019, the harvest of fruit and berries was by 56.4 per cent less than in 2018 (46.1 thousand tonnes).

Decrease in the harvest was determined by the lower harvest of apples and blackcurrants (59.7 per cent and 69.5 per cent respectively).

Innovation activities of enterprises

In 2016–2018, economic entities accounted for 25.5 per cent of partners of all the enterprises that promoted and introduced innovations in the co-operation innovation activities, 11.4 per cent – other EU Member States, EFTA or EU associated countries, 5.4 per cent – economic entities of other countries in the world.

According to the 2016–2018 survey data, enterprises gave the best assessment to legislation related to environmental legislation: 27.2 per cent of innovators stated that such legislation stimulated innovation, 9 per cent – that it hampered to innovative activities.

In the second place, legislation related to product safety and consumer protection. 26.6 per cent of innovators considered such legal acts as stimulating innovation, 6 per cent – that it hampered to innovative activities.

Tax-related legislation hampered innovation activities mostly – 22.3 per cent of innovators stated this fact.

In IV quarter 2019, against III quarter 2019, the average number of employees in the whole economy decreased by 4.2 thousand (0.3 per cent): in the public sector – increased by 3.3 thousand (0.9 per cent), while in the private sector – decreased by 7.5 thousand (0.8 per cent).

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of March 2020, 2 793.5 thousand resident population were living in Lithuania, which is by 858 less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–February 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year:

  • The number of live births decreased by 411 babies (9.9 per cent) and stood at 3 731;
  • The number of deaths decreased by 756 (10.3 per cent) and stood 6 615;
  • The number of marriages increased by 304 couples and the number of divorces increased by 19 couples;
  • The number of residents who emigrated from Lithuania increased by 1 640 persons (33.4 per cent) and stood at 6 555;
  • The number of persons who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 3 252 persons (1.6 times) and stood at 8 581.

In February 2020, almost half (48 per cent) of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In IV quarter 2019, average gross monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) totaled EUR 1,346.7 and, against III quarter 2019, increased by 3.1 per cent.

In IV quarter 2019, average net monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to EUR 851 and, compared to III quarter 2019, increased by 2.8 per cent.

In IV quarter 2019, against III quarter 2019, real earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) grew by 2.1 per cent.


Innovation activities of enterprises 

In 2016–2018, against 2014–2016, the proportion of innovative enterprises in Lithuania remained almost the same and accounted for 46.9 per cent of the total number of manufacturing and service enterprises (in 2014–2016, 46.6 per cent) having 10 and more employees.

41.6 per cent of all the enterprises introduced business process innovation, 27.6 per cent – product innovation, their proportion increased by 4.3 percentage points. 46 per cent of all the enterprises introduced technological innovation (product and (or) process), 20.1 per cent – non-technological innovation (organisational and (or) marketing).

In 2016–2018, 18 per cent of all the enterprises placed new goods on the market, 15.6 per cent – new services.

In 2016–2018, the majority of new or updated products were created by the enterprises themselves – 39.7 per cent of all the innovative enterprises. Technological process innovations were also created by the enterprises themselves – 57.9 per cent of all the innovative enterprises

In 2018, the turnover of innovative enterprises accounted for 67.1 per cent of the turnover of all the enterprises, and innovative enterprises, in 2018, employed 67.1 per cent of employees of all the enterprises.

In 2018, expenditure on innovation totalled EUR 1,074.9 million and, against 2016, it decreased by 13.8 per cent.

The biggest share of expenditure (61 per cent) was allocated for the acquisition of fixed assets – new machinery, installations and equipment, software, intellectual property rights, buildings.

The share of R&D expenditure for works carried out in the enterprise accounted for 18.4 per cent, and for works carried out not in the enterprise – 2.2 per cent of the total innovation expenditure.

In 2019, the number of recorded marriages totalled 19.5 thousand.

Against 2018, the number of marriages decreased by 232 (1 per cent).

In IV quarter 2019, income of non-finanial enterprises1 from the sale of goods and services rendered totalled EUR 25.8 billion, or by 4.1 per cent higher than in the previous quarter and by 7 per cent higher than in IV quarter 2018.

In IV quarter 2019, pre-tax profit generated by non-finanial enterprises totalled EUR 1.7 billion or, against the previous quarter, decreased by 4.3 per cent, while against IV quarter 2018, increased by 35.4 per cent.

Based on provisional data 2019, income of non-finanial enterprises totalled EUR 96.7 billion and pre-tax profit amounted to EUR 6.5 billion. Against 2018, income increased by 8.5 per cent, profit – almost 10 per cent.

In February 2020, against February 2019, purchase prices of agricultural products decreased by 0.2 per cent.

Illegal juvenile work

As of the data of the State Labour Inspectorate of the Republic of Lithuania under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, in 2019,  the number of illegally (unlawfully) employed persons under the age of 18 years amounted to 41, i.e. the number of illegally (unlawfully) employed minors accounted for 1.9 per cent of all illegally (unlawfully) employed persons.

In January 2020, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 487.2 thousand (by 6.8 per cent more than a year ago), of which the number of nights spent by foreigners  totalled 233.2 thousand (by 6 per cent more).

Based on the data of the National Agency for Education, in 2019, the number of children who participated in the non-formal education programmes amounted to 51.1 thousand, and in the circles complementing formal education, the registered number of children attending these circles totalled 59.6 thousand, which is by 3 thousand more than in 2018.

In 2019, the majority of children attended sports and music circles (36 thousand and 29.7 thousand respectively).

12.9 thousand children (1,090 more than in 2018) chose art circles, 4,192 children (943 more) –  technical creation activities, 984 children (574 more) – information technology courses.


Mortality

In 2019, 38.3 thousand deaths were registered. Against 2018, the number of deaths decreased by 1,293, or 3.3 per cent.

In 2019, deaths of persons aged 65 and older accounted for 77 per cent (66 per cent of all deaths among men and 87.4 per cent of all deaths among women), 22.6 per cent of all deaths were deaths of persons aged 15–64 (33.6 per cent of all deaths among men and 12.3 per cent of all deaths among women).

Crimes recorded in the domestic environment

Based on the data provided by the Prison Department under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania, in 2019, the number of persons, convicted for domestic violence, who attended the violent behaviour changing programme, totalled 2,112  (in 2018, 1,793).

In 2019, 2,536 persons (in 2018, 2,117), convicted for domestic violence, were appointed to participate in the violent behaviour changing programme.


Migration

Based on the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, in 2019, asylum in the Republic of Lithuania was granted for 45 children who came with their parents or other legitimate representatives.

978 children received permits or changed permits for temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania, 225 – permits for permanent residence in the Republic of Lithuania, 195 – permits or changed permits for temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania for educational purposes.

In 2019, compared to 2018, grain harvest increased by 26 per cent and amounted to 5,509.4 thousand tonnes.

The increase in harvest was conditioned by an increase in harvest of winter cereals (76 per cent), although the harvest of summer cereals and legumes decreased (by 25 and 21 per cent respectively).

In 2019, compared to 2018, rape harvest increased by 59 per cent and amounted to 688.7 thousand tonnes. This was influenced by an increase in harvest of winter rape (97 per cent), although harvest of summer rape decreased by 69 per cent.

Employment and Unemployment

In 2019, against 2018, the number of employed persons mostly increased in the human health and social work activities (by 5.1 thousand), while decreased in agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors (by 10 thousand).

In 2019, the majority of the population worked as specialists (326.8 thousand). The most important increase was recorded in the number of specialists (5.1 thousand), while a drop was determined in the number of qualified workers engaged in agriculture, forestry and fishery activities (by 5.5 thousand).

The employment rate of persons aged 20–64 increased by 0.4 percentage points and accounted for 78.2 per cent. The unemployment rate of persons in this age group remained almost the same and accounted for 6.4 per cent.

In 2019, investment in tangible fixed assets within the national territory totalled EUR 2.2 billion and, compared to IV quarter 2018, increased by 4.4 per cent at constant prices.

In 2019, material investments in the country totalled EUR 7.1 billion and, against the 2018, increased by 8.4 per cent.


Social protection

In 2019, the average number of state social insurance beneficiaries per month totalled 64.6 thousand, or by 6.6 thousand (9 per cent) less than in 2018.

Expenditure for this benefit amounted to EUR 63.4 million, or by 8.4 per cent less than in 2018. 

In 2019, expenditure for allowances paid to the families with children increased about 1.5 times and, against 2018, amounted to EUR 376.1 million.

In 2019, based on provisional data, average gross monthly earnings, individual enterprises included, in the whole economy amounted to EUR 1296.2; compared to 2018, after elimination of the influence of the changes in gross earnings indexation due to changes in taxation since 2019, increased by 8.8 per cent.

In 2019, average net monthly earnings amounted to EUR 822, and over a year increased by 14.2 per cent. The real earnings over a year increased by 11.6 per cent.

In IV quarter 2019, compared to the same quarter of 2018, total industrial production, calendar adjusted, decreased by 0.1 per cent at current prices (unadjusted – increased by 0.1 per cent), the manufacturing production – increased by 0.5 per cent (unadjusted – 0.6 per cent).

Services producer price index (SPPI) and price changes


Over the year (in III quarter 2019, against III quarter 2018) the biggest increase in prices was observed for accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities, tax consultancy (12.2 per cent), air transport (8.9 per cent) and data processing, hosting and related activities; web portals (7.8 per cent).

The biggest drop in prices was observed for transportation services via pipelines and publishing services (19.8 and 14 per cent respectively). 

In III quarter 2019, against II quarter, the biggest increase in prices was recorded for transportation services via pipelines (4.3 per cent), accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities, tax consultancy (3.4 per cent), but the most significant drop in prices was observed for accommodation (12 per cent) and travel agency, tour operator reservation service and related activities (10.3 per cent).

In 2018, expenditure on social protection amounted to EUR 7.2 billion, and compared to 2017, increased by 13.1 per cent.  In 2018, the relative share of social protection accounted for 15.9 per cent of GDP (in 2017, 15.1 per cent). In 2018, expenditure on social protection per capita amounted to EUR 2,574, which is by EUR 320 (14.2 per cent) more than in 2017.

In November 2019, 496.5 thousand passengers arrived at or departed from the airports, which is by 8.1 per cent more than in the same period of last year.

In November 2019, the amount of freight handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal amounted to 4.5 million tonnes, which is by 12.6 per cent less than in November 2018.

In November 2019, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 16.2 thousand, or by 7.1 per cent less than in November 2018.

In November 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 306, 9 people died and 382 people were injured. In III quarter 2019, the employment rate of persons aged 20–64 accounted for 78.1 per cent, the unemployment rate – 6.2 per cent. The largest share of employed persons was registered in industry – 239.8 thousand (17.4 per cent of the total working population) and in trade – 235 thousand (17.1 per cent).

Investment in tangible fixed assets

Based on provisional data, in 2018, investment in tangible fixed assets in the country totalled EUR 8 billion, which is by 8.9 per cent more than in 2017.

In 2018, investment in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties accounted for, respectively, 44, around 19 and 12 per cent of the total investment in the country. The smallest investment was recorded for Tauragė county – 1.5 per cent of the total investment.

  • In III quarter 2019, the number of passengers carried by all modes of transport stood at 87.6 million; compared to the same period of 2018, it decreased by 0.5 per cent. In III quarter 2019, average net (after employee tax) monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises excluded) amounted to EUR 834.3 and compared to II quarter 2019 increased by 2 per cent: in the public sector it amounted to EUR 865.2 and increased by 2.1 per cent, in the private sector – EUR 820.7 and increased by 2 per cent.

In III quarter 2019, against II quarter 2019, real earnings in the whole economy grew by 2.3 per cent: in the public sector – by 2.4, in the private sector  – by 2.3 per cent.

Energy
 

In September 2019, motor gasoline resources increased by 2.4 per cent, liquefied petroleum gas and diesel fuel used for road transport – by 1.7 per cent each, but crude oil resources decreased by 2.7 per cent.

In the said period, electrical energy resources increased by 4.5 per cent, and natural gas resources decreased by 45.7 per cent.

Agri-environmental indicators
 

In 2018, herbicides accounted for the biggest portion (48 per cent) of the total plant protection product amount used for agricultural plant care: fungicides and plant-growth regulators made up 25 per cent each, insecticides – 2 per cent.

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of October 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 793.5 thousand, which is by 698 less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–September 2019, compared to the same period of the previous year:

  • The number of live births increased by 17 (0.1 per cent) and stood at 21,588;
  • The number of deaths decreased by 778 (2.6 per cent) and  stood at 29,032;
  • The number of marriages decreased by 495 couples, while that of divorces increased by 100 couples;
  • The number of residents who emigrated from Lithuania increased by 5,892 persons (23.7 per cent) and stood at 30,711;
  • The number of persons who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 15,359 persons (1.7 times) and stood at 37,457;
  • The majority (60.7 per cent) of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In September 2019, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 603.3 thousand – that is by 3.2 per cent more than in the same period last year. In Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 4.4 million tonnes – by 7.8 per cent more than a year ago.

In September 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 357, 17 people died and 443 people were injured. The number of road accidents involving children totalled 69; 76 children were injured and 1 child died in the accidents. 10 road accidents were caused by drink-driving.

Enterprise bankruptcy

In I quarter 2019, there were 852 enterprises against which bankruptcy processes were initiated (by 24.6 per cent less than in I quarter 2018). The number of bankruptcy processes initiated significantly decreased in Alytus and Marijampolė counties (by 51.3 and 47.1 per cent respectively), while it increased in Tauragė, Šiauliai and Utena counties (by 30, 28.6 and 17.6 per cent respectively). Mainly bankruptcy processes were initiated in wholesale and retail trade (27.2 per cent) and construction (17.6 per cent) enterprises.

The assets of all enterprises against which bankruptcy process was initiated in I quarter 2019 at the beginning of the bankruptcy process amounted to EUR 18.5 million, or 52.5 per cent of all creditors’ claims (EUR 35.2 million)


Tourism

Based on provisional data, in August 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 1.3 million (by 10 per cent more than in August 2018), the number of nights spent by foreigners  totalled 541.9 thousand (by 9 per cent more).


Agriculture

In September 2019, against September 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products decreased by 4.7 per cent.  Purchase prices of plant products decreased by 9.4 per cent, animals and livestock products – increased by 2.8 per cent.

In September 2019, against September 2018, the share of purchased ovine  increased by 58.5 per cent, that of cattle – 16.7 per cent.

The share of strawberries purchased in III quarter 2019, against III quarter  2018, increased by 2.5 times, while that of apples – decreased by 55.1 per cent.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, the resources of liquefied petroleum gas increased by 9.4, motor gasoline – 6.5 per cent, while the resources of road transport diesel decreased by 0.3 per cent. In the said period, the electricity resources increased by 10.4 per cent, natural gas – decreased by 10 per cent.

At the end of 2018, the gap between the state social insurance old-age pensions of men and women stood at 17.3 per cent (at the end of 2017, 17.1 per cent).


Turnover of goods in marketplaces having an administration (except marketplaces trading in motor cars)

In III quarter 2019, the turnover of trade in the marketplaces totalled EUR 101.7 million, and, compared to II quarter 2019, increased by 0.1 per cent at current prices. Trade in food products increased by 6.7 per cent, non-food products – decreased by 2.9, plants and animals – 15.4 per cent.


Tourism

Based on provisional data, in August 2019, the accommodation establishments received 545.2 thousand tourists (by 10.7 per cent more than in August 2018), the number of foreigners totalled 259.9 thousand (by 8.7 per cent more).

In 2018, the average net annual earnings of a person who is living alone, working and having no children totalled EUR 8,691 and, compared to 2017, increased by 10 per cent. The average net annual earnings, with social transfers for family and children, of a married couple with two children, when only one of the spouses is working, totalled EUR 9,776 and, compared to 2017, increased by 13.4 per cent.

In January–August 2019:

The number of live births stood at 19,094 and compared to the same period of the previous year, decreased by 14 (0.1 per cent);

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths decreased by 857 (3.2 per cent) and totalled 26,161;

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of marriages decreased by 611 couples, while that of divorces increased by 36 couples;

26,463 residents emigrated from Lithuania, which is by 4,487 persons (20.4 per cent) more than in the same period of the previous year;

33,068 persons immigrated to Lithuania, which is by 12,739 persons (1.6 times) more than in the same period of the previous year;

The majority (61.2 per cent) of immigrants were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who came back to Lithuania.

In II quarter 2019, average gross monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) totalled EUR 1278 and, against I quarter 2019, increased by 2.1 per cent.

In II quarter 2019, average net monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to EUR 811.5 and, compared to I quarter 2019, increased by 1.9 per cent.

In II quarter 2019, against I quarter 2019, real earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) grew by 0.3 per cent.

Services producer price index (SPPI) and price changes

Since I quarter 2019, calculation of the service producer price index of two new economic activities – accommodation activity and travel agency, tour operator reservation service and related activities – has been started.

Over a year (II quarter 2019, against II quarter 2018), the largest increase in prices was observed for postal activities under universal service obligation (16.2 per cent) and other postal and courier activities (10.4 per cent), decrease – legal (22.3 per cent) and publishing (14.3 per cent) activities.

In II quarter 2019, against I quarter 2019, the largest increase in prices was recorded for air transport (18.1 per cent) and accommodation (14.9 per cent) services, while decrease – transport via pipelines (8.5 per cent) and cleaning activities (4.9 per cent).

Investment in tangible fixed assets

In 2017, investment in tangible fixed assets within the national territory totalled EUR 7.3 billion and, against 2016, increased by 5.8 per cent.

The main focus of investors is on Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda counties. Based on the 2017 data, Vilnius county received 40 per cent of the total national investment, Kaunas county – about 19 per cent, Klaipėda county – 13 per cent of the total investment. Investment in Tauragė county accounts for the smallest share, i.e. 1.6 per cent of the total investment.

  • In August 2019, 352 road traffic accidents with casualties were registered, in which 18 people were killed, 441 – injured. 83 accidents with children as casualties were recorded, in which 91 children were injured and 2 were killed. 14 road traffic accidents were caused by drunk persons.

  • In August 2019, 621.9 thousand passengers arrived at or departed from the airports, which is by 0.5 per cent more than in the same period of last year.

  • In August 2019, the amount of freight handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal amounted to 4.7 million tonnes, which is by 6.1 per cent less than in the same period of 2018.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products decreased by 1.9 per cent. Purchase prices of crop products decreased by 5.7, those of animals and animal products – increased by 4 per cent.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, the amount of strawberries purchased increased 3.6 times, while vegetables – decreased by 14.5 per cent.

In August 2019, compared to August 2018, the amount of cattle purchased increased by 4.5 per cent, while eggs – decreased by 25 per cent.

Tourism

Based on provisional data, in July 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 1.3 million (by 8.3 per cent more than in July 2018), the number of nights spent by foreigners  totalled 486.4 thousand (by 6 per cent more).

In 2018, against 2017, the number of domestic overnight trips increased by 4.5 per cent and stood at 2.6 million. In 2018, the average duration of domestic trip of Lithuanian resident was 2.7 overnight stays. The average expenditure per personal trip of a resident totalled EUR 73, per business trip – EUR 84.

In 2018, the number of same-day trips stood at 12 million and, compared to 2017, increased by 2.7 per cent; the average expenditure per same-day trip totalled EUR 28.

Financial and insurance activities

In 2018, commercial banks earned EUR 441.1 million net interest income (EUR 30.3 million more than in 2017) and EUR 329.2 million net profit (EUR 93.2 million or 39 per cent more than in 2017).

Income of financial leasing enterprises totalled EUR 79.7 million (17.9 per cent more than in 2017). Net profit earned by the above mentioned enterprises amounted to EUR 27.6 million (2 per cent more than in 2017).

In 2018, gross premiums written in the life insurance market totalled EUR 293.8 million and, against 2017, increased by 8.3 per cent. Gross premiums written in the non-life insurance market totalled EUR 768.7 million, or 14.2 per cent more than in 2017.

In 2018, life insurance enterprises earned EUR 18 million net profit, or 13 per cent less than in 2017. Net profit earned by non-life insurance enterprises amounted to EUR 22.8 and, against 2017, increased by almost 1.4 times.

  • In II quarter 2019, traffic volume by all modes of transport totalled 97.4 million passengers, or by 1.6 per cent more than in II quarter 2018. Transport of passengers by sea, against II quarter 2018, increased by 28.8 per cent, transport of passengers by rail – 9.2 per cent, by road – 1.7 per cent. The number of passengers carried by Lithuanian airlines decreased by 35 per cent, by inland waterway transport – 10.3 per cent.

  • In July 2019, the number of passenger cars registered in our country for the first time totalled 16.8 thousand, or by 3.9 per cent less than in July 2018.

  • In II quarter 2019, AB Lietuvos paštas received and sent 5 million 870.2 thousand despatches of correspondence and 59 thousand postal packages, or by 2.3 and 6.5 per cent respectively more than in II quarter 2018.

  • In II quarter 2019, the number of active subscribers of public mobile telephone network totalled 4 million 548.4 thousand, that is by 0.8 per cent more compared to the same period 2018.

  • In July 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 344, 21 people died and 431 people were injured. The number of road accidents involving children totalled 58; 72 children were injured and 2 children died in the accidents. 15 road accidents were caused by drink-driving. 

  • In July 2019, the number of passengers who arrived at or departed from airports totalled 595.4 thousand – that is by 3.2 per cent less than in the same period last year.

  • In July 2019, in Klaipėda National Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, cargo load amounted to 4.6 million tonnes – by 5 per cent less than a year ago.

In 2018, in the Capital County, the average monthly disposable income per household member totalled EUR 613, in the Central and Western Lithuania Region – EUR 429 (in the country – EUR 482).

In the opinion of citizens, in 2018, the minimum monthly amount of money needed to meet ordinary needs totalled EUR 414 per one household member.

In July 2019, against July 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 2.6 per cent.

Purchase prices of plant products increased by 2.7 per cent, animals and livestock products – 2.5 per cent.

The share of apples purchased in July 2019, against July 2018, decreased by 95.6 per cent, that of strawberries – increased by 54.6 per cent.

In July 2019, against July 2018, the share of purchased cattle increased by 18.3 per cent, that of pigs – 17.5 per cent.

In 2018, one Lithuanian citizen consumed 109 kg cereals and cereal products, which is by 11 kg less than in 2017; the amount of meat and meat products consumed totalled 99 kg (4 kg more than a year ago).

Transport and communications

In 2018, the number of passenger cars registered in our country totalled 1 million 431 thousand, or by 5.4 per cent more than in 2017. The amount of passenger cars, compared to 2017, most significantly increased in Marijampolė (7.1 per cent), Kaunas (per cent), Vilnius (5.9per cent) and Klaipėda (5.5 proc.) counties.

In II quarter 2019, the number of television subscriptions totalled 672.4 thousand, that is by 3.9 per cent less than in the same period 2018; of which cable television subscribers – 337.8 thousand, or by 6.3 per cent less.

It is expected that in 2019 the area of cereals sown will amount to 1 million 508.3 thousand hectares, which is by 3 per cent more than in 2018.

The area of sugar beet is expected to total 14.8 thousand hectares, or by 8.6 per cent less than in 2018.

The area of rapeseed is estimated to be 245.8 hectares, or by 17.5 per cent more than in 2018.

In I quarter 2019, the general government deficit totalled EUR 234.5 million.

Enterprise bankruptcy

The assets of all enterprises against which a bankruptcy process was initiated in 2018 at the beginning of the bankruptcy process amounted to EUR 112.2 million, or 45.4 per cent of all creditors’ claims (EUR 247 million). The least share of assets covered by creditors’ claims was registered in Šiauliai (15.5 per cent) and Alytus (25.9 per cent) counties.

The number of employees in the enterprises against which a bankruptcy process was initiated in 2018 at the beginning of the bankruptcy process totalled 4,583. An average number of employees employed in the enterprise at the beginning of the bankruptcy process was 2.2 employees. The highest average number of employees was recorded in Telšiai and Šiauliai counties (6.4 and 3 employees respectively), the lowest – Panevėžys and Marijampolė counties (1.3 and 1.9 employees respectively).

Economic entities in operation

In 2017, there were 5,241 enterprise groups operating in Lithuania, which is by 7 per cent more than in 2016. International enterprise groups amounted to 3,158 , of which only 590 (or around 19 per cent) – controlled Lithuanian enterprises.

In 2017, the majority (1,005 or 19 per cent) of enterprise groups operating in Lithuanian were engaged in wholesale, except trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles.

In June 2019, 392 road traffic accidents with casualties were registered, in which 18 people were killed, 481 – injured. 78 accidents with children as casualties were recorded, in which 84 children were injured. 19 road traffic accidents were caused by drunk persons.

In June 2019, 604.8 thousand passengers arrived at or departed from the airports, which is by 0.9 per cent less than in the same period of last year.

In June 2019, the amount of freight handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal amounted to 4.9 million tonnes, which is by 1.7 per cent more than in June 2018.

  • At the beginning of 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.2 thousand, i.e. by 14.7 thousand (0.5 per cent) less than at the beginning of 2018.

  • At the beginning of 2019, the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania accounted for 98.3 per cent of the country’s resident population, those of Ukraine – 0.5 per cent, Russian – 0.4 per cent, Belarus – 0.3 per cent.

  • Most residents of the country (2 million 656 thousand, or 95 per cent) were born in Lithuania, 138.2 thousand (5 per cent) – abroad.

  • Almost half (48.8 per cent) of the resident population aged 15 and older were married, 10.1 per cent were divorced, each eleventh – wido­wed. The number of divorced women was 1.8 times, that of widowed women – 7 times higher than that of men.

  • In 2018, there were 10 live births per 1 000 popula­tion (in 2017, 10.1). As in 2017, the total fertility rate was 1.63.      In 2018, the mean age of women at the birth of the first child was 27.8 years (in 2017, 27.5 years).

  • In 2018, the crude death rate (the number of deaths per 1 000 population) stood at 14.1 (in 2017, 14.2). In 2018, the number of infant deaths per 1 000 live births was 3.4 (in 2017, 2.9).

  • In 2018, life expectancy at birth for men was 70.9 years, for women – 80.6 years. As in 2017, the difference between life ex­pectan­cy at birth for men and for women was the same as in 2017 – 9.7 years.

  • In 2018, there were 7 marriages per 1000 population (in 2017, 7.5) and 3.1 divorces (in 2017, 3). In 2018, the number of divorces per 100 marriages stood at 43.8 (in 2017, 40.2). The ratio of marriages to divorces is more precisely reflected by the total divorce rate, which is calculated taking into account the duration of the previous marriage. If the previous year’s ratio does not change, it is probable that, out of 100 couples, 39 will get divorced.

Based on provisional data, in May 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 762.4 thousand (by 7 per cent more than in May 2018), the number of nights spent by foreigners totalled 396.8 thousand (by 7.1 per cent more).

In June 2019, against June 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 7.9 per cent.  

Purchase prices of plant products increased by 10.1 per cent, animals and livestock products – 4.7 per cent.

The amount of fruit and berries purchased increased by 87.5 per cent.

In II quarter 2019, against the same period in 2018, the amount of apples purchased increased by 3.2 times, strawberries – 41.3 per cent less.

Indicators of travel agencies and tour operators

In 2018, travel agencies and tour operators provided services for 193.9 thousand foreigners, of whom 71.8 thousand were same-day visitors, and for 500.3 thousand Lithuanian residents, of whom 34.1 thousand were same-day visitors. Compared to 2017, the number of foreign tourists whose trips to Lithuania are organised by travel agencies or tour operators increased by 7.5 per cent, the number of Lithuanian residents’ trips abroad increased by 23 per cent.

Demographic indicators

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of June 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 791.1 thousand, which is by 3.1 thousand (0.1 per cent) less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–May 2019:

  • The number of live births stood at 11,114 and compared to the same period of the previous year, decreased by 565 (4.8 per cent);
  • Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths decreased by 916 (5.1 per cent) and totalled 17,062;
  • Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of marriages decreased by 320 couples, while that of divorces – by 2 couples;
  • 15,996 residents emigrated from Lithuania, which is by 3,164 persons (24.7 per cent) more than in the same period of the previous year;
  •  18,893 persons immigrated to Lithuania, which is by 7,016 persons (1.6 times) more than a year ago;
  • The majority (60.3 per cent) of persons who came back to Lithuania in 2019 were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania.

Average earnings

In I quarter 2019:

  • Average gross monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) totalled EUR 1,251.9 and, against IV quarter 2018, increased by 1 per cent.
  • Average net monthly earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to EUR 796.5 and, compared to IV quarter 2018, increased by 6.8 per cent.
  • Real earnings in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) grew by 6.7 per cent.

In 2018, the highest average gross monthly earnings ­ (EUR 1,048.1) were recorded in enterprises having 250–499 employees, the lowest (EUR 663.7) – in enterprises having 1–9 employees.

Social protection of children

In 2018, 2 thousand children lost parental care and, against 2017, the number of such children decreased by 12.4 per cent.

At the end of 2018, in 4.1 thousand families 5.2 thousand children got care (guardianship), against 2017, the number of such families and children receiving care (guardianship) decreased by 6.5 per cent and 6.7 respectively.

In the 2018–2019 academic year, the number of students in formal education of Lithuania accounted for 82.2 per cent of young people aged 7–24. 40 per cent of young people aged 19–24 were seeking higher education.

Research and development

In 2018, expenditure on scientific research and experimental development (R&D) works in the higher education and in the government sector totalled EUR 248 million, i.e. by EUR 8.5 million (3.6 per cent) more than in 2017.

The major proportion of R&D expenditure fell within the higher education sector – EUR 153.2 million, or 61.8 per cent of the total R&D expenditure, while in the government sector – EUR 94.8 million, or 38.2 per cent.

In 2018, in the institutions of the higher education and government sectors, the number of employees engaged in R&D activities (both at the main and the secondary workplace) amounted to 18 thousand, of whom 8 thousand – researchers with a scientific degree.

Road transport 

In June 2019, the number of road accidents involving persons, totalled 301, 5 people died and 380 people were injured.

The number of road accidents involving children totalled 68; 74 children were injured in the accidents.

13 road accidents were caused by drink-driving. 

Railway transport

In 2018, freight traffic volume by railway transport totalled 56.8 million tonnes of cargo, transport of passengers by rail – 5.2 million, or by 7.9 and 11 per cent respectively more than in 2017.

In 2018, 1 million 431 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country; that is by 5.4 per cent more compared to 2017, of which individual passenger cars – 1 million 228 thousand, or by 4.5 per cent more.

In May 2019, 16.4 thousand passenger cars were registered in our country for the first time; that is by 10.5 per cent less compared to the same period last year.

In 2018, AB Lietuvos paštas received and sent 23.5 million despatches of correspondence and 257.2 thousand postal packages, or by 24.5 and 35 per cent respectively more than in 2017.

In 2018, the number of active subscribers of public mobile telephone network totalled 3.8 million, that is by 1 per cent more than in 2017.

Purchase of agricultural products

In May  2019, against May 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 10.4 per cent.  

Purchase prices of plant products increased by 11.7 per cent, animals and livestock products – 8.4 per cent.

Tourism

Based on provisional data, in April 2019, the number of nights spent in the accommodation establishments totalled 602.3 thousand (by 8 per cent more than in April 2018), of which the number of nights spent by foreigners  totalled 288.3 thousand (by 5.4 per cent more).

In April 2019, against April 2018, the resources of motor gasoline increased by 4 per cent, while those of road diesel and liquefied gases decreased – by 4 and 5.4 per cent respectively.

Over the said period, electricity resources increased by 11.2, natural gas resources – by 11.5 per cent.

Enterprise bankruptcy

In 2018, bankruptcy processes were instituted in 2 093 enterprises, which is by 29.7 per cent less than in 2017. The number of initiated bankruptcy processes decreased in all counties, mostly – in Šiauliai and Marijampolė counties (67.7 and 53.2 per cent). The majority of bankruptcy processes were initiated in the enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade (32.6 per cent), construction 14.5 per cent) and administrative and support service activities (8.3 per cent).

Educational finance

In 2018, funds received in educational institutions amounted to EUR 1.9 billion, which is by EUR 159 million, or 8 per cent, more than in 2017.

General government funds accounted for the vast majority (82 per cent, or EUR 1.5 billion) of all the funds obtained by educational institutions. Over the year, they increased by EUR 104 million (7 per cent). The amount allocated by the country’s natural or legal persons increased by EUR 25 million (10 per cent) and made up 14 per cent (EUR 260 million) of all the funds received by educational institutions.

In 2018, one person studying in the educational institution, on average, received EUR 2,598 from the general government funds and EUR 589 – from the country’s and foreign natural or legal persons’ funds (in 2017, EUR 2,360 and 484 respectively).

In I quarter 2019, trade turnover in the country's markets totalled EUR 91.5 million and, against IV quarter 2018, decreased by 3.5 per cent at current prices. Trade in food products decreased by 10.6 per cent, plants and animals – 18.6 per cent, trade in non-food products increased by 1.9 per cent.

Based on provisional data, at the beginning of May 2019, resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 790.5 thousand, which is by 3.5 thousand (0.1 per cent) less than at the beginning of the year.

In January–April 2019:

  • The number of live births stood at 8,714, and compared to the same period of the previous year, decreased by 429 (4.7 per cent);
  • Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths decreased by 1,121 (7.5 per cent) and totalled 13,830;
  • Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of marriages decreased by 323, that of divorces – 51 couples;
  • 12,819 residents emigrated from Lithuania, which is by 2,277 persons (21.6 per cent) more than in the same period of the previous year;
  •  14,421 persons immigrated to Lithuania, which is by 5,313 (58.3 per cent) persons more than in the same period of the previous year;
  • The majority (61 per cent) of persons who came back to Lithuania in 2019 were the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania.

Employment and unemployment

According to the data of the population employment survey, in I quarter 2019, the largest share of employed persons was registered in industry – 254.8 thousand (18.5 per cent of the total working population) and in trade – 229.8 thousand (16.7 per cent).

The employment rate of persons aged 20–64 accounted for 78 per cent and, against IV quarter 2018, decreased by 0.3 percentage points, against the respective period 2018, increased by 1.9 percentage points.  

The unemployment rate of persons of the above mentioned age group stood at 6.6 per cent and, against IV quarter 2018, increased by 0.5 percentage points, against the respective period 2018, decreased by 0.7 percentage points.

Transport and communications

  • In April 2019, 540.4 thousand passengers arrived at or departed from the airports, which is by 4.8 per cent more than in the same period of last year.

  • In April 2019, the amount of freight handled in Klaipėda State Seaport and Būtingė Terminal amounted to 4.5 million tonnes, which is by 17 per cent more than in April 2018.

  • In April 2019, 313 road traffic accidents with casualties were registered, in which 8 people were killed, 385 – injured. 50 accidents with children as casualties were recorded, in which 1 child was killed, 55 children were injured. 19 road traffic accidents were caused by drunk persons.

  • In I quarter 2019, goods carried by inland waterways transport amounted to 138.6 thousand tonnes, which is by 5.1 per cent less than in the same period of 2018. Passenger transport by inland waterways stood at 214.6 thousand, or by 12.8 per cent less.

  • In I quarter 2019, the number of passengers carried by all modes of transport stood at 94.7 million; compared to the same period of 2018, it decreased by 1.9 per cent. Against I quarter 2018, passenger transport by sea increased by 31.3, by rail – 21.9 per cent. The number of passengers carried by Lithuania’s airlines decreased by 20.5, by inland waterways – 12.8, by road – 2.1 per cent.

  • In April 2019, the number of passenger cars registered in the country for the first time amounted to 17.2 thousand, or by 5 per cent more than in April 2018.

  • In I quarter 2019, a public limited company AB Lietuvos paštas received and sent 4,755.8 thousand items of correspondence and 67.5 thousand postal parcels, which is, respectively, by 6.4 per cent less and 4.2 per cent more than in I quarter 2018.

  • In I quarter 2019, the number of active mobile phone subscribers amounted to 4,485.2 thousand, which is by 0.9 per cent more than in the same period of 2018.

Fertility

In 2018, 28.1 thousand live births were registered; compared to 2017, the number of live births decreased by 547 babies, or 1.9 per cent.

In 2018, the major portion (44.3 per cent) of live births were first order births (in 2017, 46.3 per cent); second order births increased from 38.2 per cent in 2017 to 40 per cent in 2018. The proportion of third and higher order births increased from 15.5 in 2017 to 15.7 per cent in 2018.

In 2018, the number of live births outside marriage amounted to 7.4 thousand, or 26.4 per cent of all live births (in 2017, 7.7 thousand, or 26.8 per cent).

Investment in tangible fixed assets

In I quarter 2019, investment in tangible fixed assets in the country totalled EUR 1.3 billion, and, compared to I quarter 2018, increased by 10.8 per cent at constant prices.

Investment in construction and acquisition of residential buildings totalled EUR 252 million, which is by 18.8 per cent more than in I quarter 2018.


Job vacancies and occupied posts

In I quarter 2019, the number of job vacancies in the Capital Region of Lithuania stood at 10 thousand, in the Central and Western Region of Lithuania – 9.1 thousand. In I quarter 2019, compared to IV quarter 2018, the number of job vacancies increased in both regions: in the Capital Region – by 1.6 thousand (19.3 per cent), in the Central and Western Region of Lithuania – by 1.5 thousand (19.2 per cent).

In I quarter 2019, compared to IV quarter 2018, job vacancy rate in both regions increased by 0.2 percentage points; in the Capital Region and the Central and Western Region of Lithuania, it stood at 1.8 and 1.2 per cent respectively.


Purchase of agricultural products

In April 2019, compared to April 2018, purchase prices of agricultural products increased by 10.8 per cent.

Purchase prices of crop products increased by 12.8, those of animals and animal products – by 8 per cent.

In 2018, the annual circulation of  magazines and newspapers decreased by 3 million 653 thousand and 5 million 105 thousand copies respectively.

In March 2019, against the same period of the previous year, motor petrol resources increased by 8.2 per cent, diesel fuel resources used for road transport – by 4.9 per cent, while those of liquefied petroleum gas decreased by 24.3 percent, and crude oil resources  – by 12.6 per cent.

Over the said period, electricity resources decreased by 5.2 per cent, natural gas resources – by 15.9 per cent.


Job vacancies
 
At the end of I quarter 2019, the number of job vacancies, seasonally and calendar adjusted, totalled 18.2 thousand – by 0.4 thousand or by 2.3 per cent more than in IV quarter 2018, and by 1.1 thousand or by 5.8 per cent less than a year ago.

Population and its composition

At the beginning of 2019, the resident population of Lithuania totalled 2 million 794.2 thousand, i.e. by 14.7 thou­­sand (0.5 per cent) less than at the beginning of 2018.

At the beginning of 2019, 1 million 875.4 thousand (67.1 per cent) residents of Lithua­nia lived in ci­ties and towns, 918.8 thou­­sand (32.9 per cent) – in rural areas.

The number of women in Lithuania was by 203 thousand higher than that of men (1 million 498.6 thou­­­sand and 1 million 295.6 thousand res­pec­ti­vely). Wo­men accounted for 53.6 per cent of the total resident popu­lation; there were 1 157 women per 1 000 men.

At the beginning of 2019, the number of children (aged 0–14) amounted to 421.9 thousand, or 15.1 per cent of the total number of resident population, people aged 15–64 – 1 million 819.9 thousand, or 65.1 per cent, elderly resident popu­lation (aged 65 and older) – 552.4 thousand, or 19.8 per cent. The number of children was by 23.6 per cent lower than that of elderly people.
