Statistical survey on nationality, native language and religion carried out for the first time

From 15 January, Statistics Lithuania starts the statistical survey on population by ethnicity, native language and religion. During the survey, the respondents will be asked about their ethnicity, mother tongue, knowledge of other languages and religion professed.

These indicators were previously collected through the population and housing censuses.  Based on the data of the last population and housing census carried out in 2011, population of Lithuania comprised people of 154 ethnicities. One in three residents indicated that they spoke two foreign languages. The residents belonged to 59 different religious communities.

Since this year’s census will be carried out on the basis of administrative data, in response to the user need, in order to maintain continuity and compatibility of indicators, such information is collected through statistical survey this year.

From 15 January to 28 February, an online survey is carried out. The residents are invited to sign in online at https://surasymas.stat.gov.lt and participate in the survey. You can sign in by entering personal data (personal identification code and valid document number) or via the E-Government Gateway. There are only four questions to answer, so it only takes a few minutes to fill out the questionnaire.

In order to ensure the quality and representativeness of the results of the statistical survey, after the end of the online survey, it is planned that around 40 thousand people who have not participated in the online survey will be sampled from the Population Register and interviewed by the interviewers.

The data on population ethnicity, native language and religion will be provided together with the results of the Population and Housing Census 2021.

We kindly invite all residents to actively participate in the statistical survey:
