In 2021, 44.9 thousand people immigrated to Lithuania, which is 4.1 per cent (by 1.8 thousand) more than in 2020.
In 2021, 25.2 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania. Against 2020, the number of emigrants increased by 9.1 per cent (2.1 thousand).
Over the last two years (2020–2021), the number of residents who returned to Lithuania exceeded that of people who emigrated from Lithuania (in 2021 – by 4.9 thousand).
In 2021, the number of foreign immigrants exceeded that of emigrants by 14.8 thousand.
Over the last ten years (2012–2021), 285.7 thousand persons immigrated to Lithuania, of whom 180.1 thousand (63 per cent) were Lithuanian nationals who returned to Lithuania, and 105.6 thousand (37 per cent) – foreigners. In 2012–2021, 369 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania, of whom 323.1 thousand (87.6 per cent) were Lithuanian nationals, and 45.9 thousand (12.4 per cent) – foreigners. During the same period, in 2012–2021, the number of people who emigrated from Lithuania exceeded the number of those who immigrated to Lithuania by 83.3 thousand. The net international migration by Lithuanian nationals was negative (the number of those who emigrated exceeded the number of those who immigrated by 143 thousand), by foreigners – positive (the number of those who immigrated exceeded the number of those who emigrated by 59.7 thousand).

In 2021, the crude immigration rate stood at 16 (in 2020, 15.4). Last year, there were 8.5 citizens of the Republic of Lithuania per 1,000 population who returned to Lithuania, and 7.5 foreigners per 1,000 population who immigrated to Lithuania (in 2020, 7.4 and 8 respectively).
In 2021, 23.7 thousand (52.9 per cent of all immigrants) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania returned to Lithuania, which is by 2.9 thousand (14 per cent) more than in 2020. In 2021, more than half (12.8 thousand (54 per cent) of them were men.
In 2021, most of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania came back from the United Kingdom (11.9 thousand, or 50.4 per cent), Norway (2.2 thousand, or 9.4 per cent), Germany (1.9 thousand, or 8.1 per cent), Ireland (1.8 thousand, or 7.8 per cent). Against 2020, the number of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania from Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany and Norway increased (by 31.2, 24, 17.3 and 13.6 per cent respectively).
In 2021–2020, the median age of male and female citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania was 30 and 29 years respectively.
Less than half (49.1 per cent) of male and 39.9 per cent of female citizens of the Republic of Lithuania aged 18 and over who returned to Lithuania in 2021 have never been married, one fourth of men (25.5 per cent) and one third of women (35.1 per cent) – were married.
In 2021, 21.2 thousand foreigners immigrated to the country (47.1 per cent of all immigrants), which is by 1.1 thousand (5.1 per cent) more than in 2020. In 2021, the majority (17.6 thousand or 83.1 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania were men.
The majority (8.3 thousand, or 39.2 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania in 2021 were the citizens of Belarus, 6.3 thousand (29.8 per cent) – Ukraine, 1.8 thousand (8.4 per cent) – the Russian Federation. Over the year, the number of citizens of Ukraine who immigrated to Lithuania decreased by 1.5 times, while of Belarus and the Russian Federation – increased by 13.8 per cent and 1.8 times respectively.
In 2021, the median age of male foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania was 37, female – 31 years (in 2020, 37 and 29 years respectively).
The majority of male (89.8 per cent) and more than half of female (56.7 per cent) foreign immigrants aged 18 and older had never been married, 9.4 per cent of men and 39.9 per cent of women – were married.

In 2021, the crude emigration rate (the number of emigrants per 1,000 population) was on the increase and stood at 9 ‰ (in 2020, at 18.3 ‰).
In 2021, the number of male and female emigrants amounted to 17.7 thousand and 7.5 thousand respectively, i.e. the number of male emigrants exceeded that of female emigrants by 10.2 thousand. Against 2020, the number of male increased by 3.4 thousand (24.1 per cent), while the number of female emigrants – decreased by 1.3 thousand (15.3 per cent).

Last year, 6.1 thousand (24.1 per cent) of all emigrants chose the United Kingdom as their destination of emigration, Norway was chosen by 2.6 thousand (10.1 per cent), Germany – 2.3 thousand (9.3 per cent), Ukraine – 2 thousand (7.8 per cent), the Netherlands – 1.5 thousand (5.9 per cent). Compared to 2020, the number of emigrants to Norway, the Netherlands and Germany increased (0.9 thousand (1.5 times), 0.7 thousand (1.8 times) and 0.6 thousand (1.3 times) respectively), while to Ukraine – decreased by 1.9 thousand (48.9 per cent). The number of emigrants to the United Kingdom slightly increased (by 0.4 per cent.)

In 2021, median age of male and female emigrants was 33 and 27 years respectively, and remained unchanged compared with 2020
In 2021, the majority (71.4 per cent) of emigrants were born in Lithuania, 7.5 per cent – in Ukraine, 4.9 per cent – in Russia, 4.5 per cent – in Belarus.
In 2021, 18.8 thousand (74.7 per cent of the total number of emigrants) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania emigrated from Lithuania (in 2020, 15.3 thousand, or 66.3 per cent). 6.4 thousand (25.3 per cent) citizens of other countries emigrated from Lithuania; most of them were citizens of Ukraine (1.9 thousand), Belarus (1.1 thousand), the Russian Federation (925), India (256), the United States (119).
In 2021, more than half of male (57.2 per cent) and female (56.3 per cent) emigrants aged 18 and older had never been married, 33 per cent of male and 28.3 per cent of female emigrants – were married.
