In 2021, the number of marriages registered amounted to 16.8 thousand, i.e. by 1.5 thousand (9.8 per cent) more than in 2020. The crude marriage rate (the number of marriages per 1,000 population) increased from 5.5 in 2020 to 6 in 2021.
From 2012 the number of marriages decreased by 18.7 percent, and the crude marriage rate decreased from 6.9 in 2012 to 6 in 2021.

In the total number of marriages, first marriages account for the largest proportion. In 2021, 12.8 thousand men (76.2 per cent of all married men) and 12.6 thousand women (74.9 per cent of all married women) got married for the first time. The number of remarriages accounted for 23.8 per cent for men and 25.1 per cent for women.

In 2021, women entering into marriage were, on average, by 2.2 years younger than men. The mean age at first marriage for men was 30.5 years (in 2020, 30.3), for women – 28.3 years (in 2020, 28.2).
Compared to 2012, the mean age at first marriage for men increased by 1.5 years and for women – 1.6 years (in 2012, 29 years for men and 26.7 years for women).

In 2021, most (83.1 per cent) marriages were entered into between the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania. In 2021, 2.8 thousand marriages with foreigners were registered (16.5 per cent of all marriages), i.e. by 0.5 thousand (21.3 per cent) more than in 2020. In 2021, 2 thousand female (11.7 per cent of all married women) and 853 male (5.1 per cent of all married men) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania married foreigners.
Compared to 2012, the number of marriages between citizens of the Republic of Lithuania and foreigners decreased by 7.2 per cent. The number of marriages with non-EU nationals decreased by 8.2 per cent.
