On 8 June, the European Conference on the Quality of Official Statistics has been opened in Vilnius for the first time. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Ingrida Šimonytė greeted the participants of the event.

Both in Europe and around the world, there is a growing focus on data and its quality. The importance of statistics has increased dramatically particularly during the pandemic, when detailed data has become essential for national politicians to make high-quality, rapid decisions. We will discuss the importance of data, their role in the governance of states in the present 10th European Conference on the Quality of Official Statistics, says Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, Director General of Statistics Lithuania.

The Conference will run for three days, until 10 June. It will address issues such as data quality assurance, confidentiality, the growing need for reliable data and the development of statistical literacy in the public, as well as challenges of increasing confidence in statistics. Representatives of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), Canada and Poland will read their reports. Parallel educational sessions and high-level guest meetings with representatives of the institutions of the Republic of Lithuania will take place.
