After attracting a record number of participants, the national phase of the European Statistics Competition 2023 has come to an end

This year, a record number of students and teachers were interested in the competition, which has already become a tradition - more than 80 teams from all over Lithuania participated in the competition! The teams had to solve 3 types of tests: perform a general knowledge test, find statistical indicators in the database and analyze a publication of the European Union Statistical Office (Eurostat) on the topic of energy.

The teams of senior and junior students who solved the tests best were invited to perform the second task - to prepare a presentation on a chosen statistical topic. Students gathered to analyze price changes and youth education indicators, as well as Lithuania's attractiveness to investors and the country's tourism trends. Presentations of the teams were evaluated by the Jury of the State Data Agency and the public on social media.

After summing up the results of both tasks of the national phase (tests and presentation), the team "JBG2" of Panevėžys Juozas Balčikonis Gymnasium took the first place in the category of senior students. The second place went to Kaunas "Saulė" Gymnasium team "GAIA", the third place - to Kaunas Jesuit High School team "FF91A4".

Kaunas Maironis University Gymnasium team "2J" won the first place in the category of junior students. The team "KIBINAI" of Vilnius Jonas Basanavičius Gymnasium took the second place. The third place went to Kretinga district Darbėnai Gymnasium team "DARBA", which was also chosen as the most creative team by the decision of the State Data Agency Jury.

We sincerely congratulate the winners and thank all the teams for their participation. We hope that the competition broadened students' knowledge of official statistics, their search and analysis, and gave teachers new ideas on how to apply statistical information in the classroom.

A new challenge awaits two teams from each category - they will have the opportunity to compete with the best teams from other countries. Winners of the European phase will be announced in June.

The project is partially financed by the European Union.
