Celebration of the World Statistics Day

On 20 October 2015, Lithuania, together with many other countries of the world, celebrated the World Statistics Day.

A conference dedicated to the World Statistics Day took place in the Government Office. It was attended by the representatives of the Government, institutions producing official statistics and providing administrative data for statistical purposes, members of the Statistical Council and the Lithuanian Statistical Society, representatives of the media, academic community, employees of Statistics Lithuania and other members of the national statistical community.

The World Statistics Day, celebrated for the second time, was dedicated to highlighting the importance of reliable and objective official statistics. The Director General of Statistics Lithuania Vilija Lapėnienė emphasised that statistical quality requires several preconditions: first, accurate primary statistical data provided by respondents (enterprises, individuals, administrative sources – State registers); second, well-educated and professional staff, able to apply advanced and reliable statistical methods; and, third, professional independence of statistical authorities. "Do all those three preconditions exist in Lithuania? In one word – yes", – affirmed Vilija Lapėnienė.

At the conference, speeches were also given by the representatives of the main official statistics user groups – advisor to the SEB Bank president, financial analyst Gitanas Nausėda, deputy editor-in-chief of a daily Verslo žinios (Business News) Irma Verbienė. At the end of the celebration, a family of musicians – Raminta, Augustas and Benas Gocentas – performed musical compositions.
