In 2020, the number of the unemployed aged 15–74 amounted to 126 thousand (69.5 thousand men and 56.5 thousand women), which is by 34 thousand (37 per cent) more than a year ago.

In 2020, the number of the unemployed aged 15–24 totalled 20.1 thousand and, against 2019, increased by 7.3 thousand (57.7 per cent).

In 2020, the number of the long-term unemployed, i.e. unemployed persons seeking for a job for one year or longer, totalled 36.5 thousand, which is by 8.3 thousand (29.5 per cent) more than in 2019.

In 2020, the long-term unemployed accounted for 29 per cent of the total number of unemployed persons, which is by 1.6 percentage points less than a year ago.

In 2020, the unemployment rate in the country stood at 8.5 per cent, which is by 2.2 percentage points higher than in 2019. The male unemployment rate was higher than that of female and stood at 9.3 per cent, the female one – at 7.7 per cent. Over the year, the male unemployment rate increased by 2.3 percentage points, female – by 2.2 percentage points.

The biggest difference between the male and female unemployment rate was recorded in the 25–29 age group (4.3 percentage points). In this age group, the unemployment rate was 10.7 per cent for male and 6.4 per cent for female.

There was also a significant difference in the 15–24 age group (4.2 percentage points). In 2020, against 2019, the unemployment rate of young population (aged 15–24) in the country increased by 7.7 percentage points and made up 19.6 per cent. Unemployment rate of young men was 21.5 per cent, that of young women – 17.3 per cent.

In 2020, the long-term unemployment rate stood at 2.5 per cent and, against 2019, increased by 0.6 percentage points. The male long-term unemployment was slightly higher than that of female (2.5 and 2.4 per cent respectively).

In 2020, 55.8 per cent of the unemployed had upper secondary (without/with vocational qualification), 22 per cent – higher or advanced vocational education and training, 13.3 per cent – general lower secondary (without/with vocational qualification), and 7.9 per cent – special upper secondary education.

In all age groups, the majority of the unemployed had medium education (from 53.6 to 75.5 per cent), the biggest proportion of the persons with the higher education, however unemployed, fell within the persons aged 25–34.

In 2020, the majority of the unemployed (115.8 thousand or 91.9 per cent) had previously worked. As the main reason for losing job, 29 per cent of the unemployed indicated personal or family reason, 25.1 per cent – dismissed or made redundant, 22.5 per cent – upon the expiry of a fixed-term employment contract. 25.5 per cent of the unemployed indicated that they had elementary occupations, 21.9 per cent – were craft and related trades workers, 16.3 per cent – service and sales workers.

In 2020, the youth (persons aged 15–24) unemployment rate in the EU stood at 16.8 per cent. The highest unemployment rate was in Spain – 38.3, Greece – 35, and Italy – 29.4 per cent, while the lowest – in Germany – 7, Czech Republic – 8, and the Netherlands – 9.1 per cent. In Lithuania, the youth unemployment rate made up 19.6 per cent.
