In 2020, the number of employed persons in the country totalled 1 million 358.1 thousand. There were 679.9 thousand employed men and 678.2 thousand employed women. Over the year, the number of employed persons decreased by 20.3 thousand (1.5 per cent).

In 2020, there were 82.7 thousand employed persons aged 15–24 in the whole economy. Against 2019, this figure decreased by 12.1 thousand (12.8 per cent). Over the year, the number of employed persons aged 55–64 decreased by 1.5 thousand (0.6 per cent) and totalled 280.3 thousand in 2020.

In 2020, the employment rate of persons aged 15–64 stood at 71.6 per cent. Over the year, it decreased by 1.4 percentage points. In 2020, against 2019, the male employment rate (aged 15–64) stood at 72.2, the female one – at 71 per cent; over the year, these figures dropped by 1.3 and 1.5 percentage points respectively.

In 2020, the youth (aged 15–24) employment rate stood at 29.4 per cent. Over the year, it dropped by 3.5 percentage points. Over the year, the employment rate of persons aged 55–64 decreased by 0.8 percentage points and stood at 67.6 per cent.

In 2020, the highest employment rate for both men and women was recorded in the 35–39 age group. Male employment rate in this age group stood at 88.7, the female – 85.3 per cent. The employment rate of young men aged 15–24 stood at 30.5 per cent, that of young women – 28.3 per cent. In 2020, 15.9 per cent of men aged 65 and older and 8.3 per cent of women of the same age were in employment.

In 2020, employees accounted for 88.2, self-employed persons – 11.2, contributing family workers – 0.6 per cent of the total employed population. In 2020, the proportion of female employees exceeded that of male employees – 91.4 and 85.1 per cent respectively.

Over the year, the largest growth in the number of employed persons was observed in the financial and insurance activities (5.6 thousand), while the largest drop – in agriculture, forestry and fishing (11.4 thousand).

In 2020, the majority of persons worked in industry – 244.8 thousand (18 per cent of the total number of employed persons), trade – 218.9 thousand (16.1 per cent), and education – 134.5 thousand (9.9 per cent).

In 2020, the largest number of employed men was observed in the construction sector (91.5 per cent), as well as the transportation and storage sector (71.2 per cent), while women prevailed in the human health and social work activities and education (86 and 79.4 per cent respectively).

In 2020, the biggest proportion of employed persons were professionals – 334.6 thousand (24.6 per cent of the total number of employed persons), craft and related trades workers – 188.2 thousand (13.9 per cent), service and sales workers – 183.2 thousand (13.5 per cent). Apart from armed forces occupations, the lowest proportion fell within skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers – 49.7 thousand (3.7 per cent), and clerical support workers – 65.9 thousand (4.8 per cent). 125.8 thousand (9.3 per cent) of employed persons were managers.

In 2020, men accounted for the major share of plant and machine operators, and assemblers, as well as craft and related trades workers – 81.3 and 78 per cent respectively, while the majority of women were employed as service and sales workers, as well as clerical support workers (72.4 and 67.6 per cent).

In 2020, 47.9 per cent of the total employed population had higher or advanced vocational education and training, 9 per cent – special upper secondary education, 4.7 per cent – lower secondary (with vocational qualification) or lower education.

Additional job

In addition to the main job, 65.1 thousand of the employed persons had additional job. Most often, both men and women were additionally employed in the service sector as well as agriculture, forestry and fishing (women – 84 and 9.8 per cent respectively, men – 65 and 25.3 per cent respectively).

In 2020, the highest employment rate of the population aged 15–64 was recorded in the Netherlands – 77.8, Germany – 76.2, and Sweden – 75.5 per cent, while the lowest – in Greece – 56.3, Italy – 58.1, and Spain – 60.9 per cent. In 2020, total employment rate of the EU population aged 15–64 stood at 67.6 per cent, in Lithuania – 71.6 per cent.

The highest employment rate of the population of this age group was recorded in Sweden – 77.6, Estonia – 72, and Germany – 71.8 per cent, while the lowest – in Luxembourg – 44, Greece – 44.6, and Croatia – 45.5 per cent. In 2020, in Lithuania, the employment rate of the population aged 55–64 stood at 67.6 per cent.
