Labour Market in Lithuania (edition 2023)

Relative standard errors and confidence intervals of statistical estimates

Relative standard error  is a measure of random error, independent of units of measurement, which allows comparing the accuracy of various estimates.

Values of the relative standard error are positive numbers. In the Labour Force Survey, the estimates are considered accurate if their relative standard error does not exceed 8 per cent. When the relative standard error is from 8 to 30 per cent, the estimates are considered satisfactory; when it exceeds 30 per cent – not sufficiently accurate. Relative standard error also depends on the sample size: the fewer sample elements are used for calculating the estimate, the less accurate it is.

95 per cent confidence intervals are provided to indicate the accuracy of the estimate. Confidence interval of an estimated parameter is an interval where the true value of the parameter is with probability of 0.95.

The interval estimate:

,

here  is estimator variance of estimate .

The indicators of labour statistics are considered accurate if their relative standard error does not exceed 10 per cent. The average number of employees is calculated by summing the full coverage data of the State Social Insurance Fund Board under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour (Sodra); therefore, the coefficient of variation is zero.
