In 2020, according to the data of the Health Information Centre of the Institute of Hygiene, the largest proportion (77.2 per cent) of deaths fell within three causes of death: diseases of the circulatory system, malignant neoplasms, and external causes of death (in 2019, 81.8 per cent).
In 2020, the highest number of deaths (52.7 per cent) was attributed to the diseases of the circulatory system; 18.9 per cent of deaths were caused by malignant neoplasms, 5.8 per cent – by external causes (in 2019, 54.6, 21, 6.2 per cent respectively).
In 2020, 2.5 thousand persons died due to external causes of death, which is by 111 (4.6 per cent) more than in 2019. In 2020, 607 persons died due to suicides, 496 – falls, 216 – transport accidents, 121 – exposure to excessive natural cold, 136 – accidental poisoning by and exposure to alcohol, 140 – drowning and submersion, 68 – assault.
