Infant mortality

In 2020, 82 stillbirths were registered. Compared to 2019, the number of stillbirths decreased by 31 (27.4 per cent).

In 2020, 70 infant deaths were registered, i.e. by 20 (22.2 per cent) less than in 2019. The infant mortality rate (the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births) decreased from 3.3 in 2019 to 2.7 in 2020.

In 2020, more than half (47, or 67.1 per cent) of all infant deaths were deaths in the neonatal period (infants aged 0–27 days). The number of such infant deaths per 1,000 live births stood at 1.9.

In 2020, according to the data of the Health Information Centre of the Institute of Hygiene, the most frequent causes of infant deaths were diseases of the perinatal period – 30 (42.9 per cent), and congenital anomalies – 22 (31.4 per cent); in 2019, 39 (43.2 per cent) and 22 (36.7 per cent) respectively.
