In 2020, the number of marriages registered amounted to 15.3 thousand, i.e. by 4.2 thousand (21.6 per cent) less than in 2019. The crude marriage rate (the number of marriages per 1,000 population) decreased from 7 in 2019 to 5.5 in 2020.

From 2010 the number of marriages decreased by 18 percent, and the crude marriage rate decreased from 6 in 2010 to 5.5 in 2020.

In the total number of marriages, first marriages account for the largest proportion. In 2020, 11.5 thousand men (75 per cent of all married men) and 11.3 thousand women (74 per cent of all married women) got married for the first time. The number of remarriages accounted for 25 per cent for men and 26 per cent for women.

In 2020, women entering into marriage were, on average, by 2.1 years younger than men. The mean age at first marriage for men was 30.3 years (in 2019, 30.7), for women – 28.2 years (in 2019, 28.3).

Compared to 2010, the mean age at first marriage for men and women increased by 2 years (in 2010, 28.5 years for men and 26.3 years for women).

In 2020, 26 underage women entered into marriage, which is by 3 less than in 2019 (in 2010, 100).

In 2020, most (84.7 per cent) marriages were entered into between the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania. In 2020, 2.3 thousand marriages with foreigners were registered (15.3 per cent of all marriages), i.e. by 1.7 thousand (42.1 per cent) less than in 2019. In 2020, 1.6 thousand female (10.3 per cent of all married women) and 717 male (4.7 per cent of all married men) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania married foreigners.

Compared to 2010, the number of marriages between citizens of the Republic of Lithuania and foreigners decreased by 25.8 per cent. The number of marriages with non-EU nationals decreased by 26.6 per cent.
