In 2019, the number of marriages registered amounted to 19.5 thousand, i.e. by 232 (1.2 per cent) less than in 2018. The crude marriage rate (the number of marriages per 1,000 population) remained the same as in 2018 – 7.

From 2009 the number of marriages decreased by 5 percent, and the crude marriage rate increased from 6.5 in 2009 to 7 in 2019.

In the total number of marriages, first marriages account for the largest proportion. In 2019, 14.7 thousand men (75.4 per cent of all married men) and 14.5 thousand women (74.4 per cent of all married women) got married for the first time. The number of remarriages accounted for 24.6 per cent for men and 25.4 per cent for women.

In 2019, women entering into marriage were, on average, by 2.4 years younger than men. The mean age at first marriage for men was 30.7 years (in 2018, 30.3), for women – 28.3 years (in 2018, 28).

Compared to 2009, the mean age at first marriage for men and women increased by 2 years (in 2009, 28.3 years for men and 26.1 years for women).

In 2019, 29 underage women entered into marriage (by 11 less than in 2018), in 2009, 115.

In 2019, most (79.3 per cent) marriages were entered into between the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania. In 2019, 4 thousand marriages with foreigners were registered (20.7 per cent of all marriages), i.e. by 699 (21 per cent) more than in 2018. In 2019, 2.9 thousand females (16 per cent of all married women) and 1 thousand males (6.3 per cent of all married men) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania married foreigners.

Compared to 2009, the number of marriages between citizens of the Republic of Lithuania and foreigners increased by 21 per cent. The number of marriages with non-EU nationals decreased by 1 per cent.
