With the current tendency in GDP growth, expenditure on education is decreasing

In 2019, general government expenditure on formal and non-formal education exceeded the level of 2009 by EUR 439.8 million and totalled EUR 2.250 billion. However, with the rapidly increasing GDP in the country, such expenditure in 2019 represented a smaller share – 4.6 per cent of GDP (in 2009, 6.7 per cent).

Funding for educational institutions increased

In 2020, funds received by educational institutions totalled EUR 2.3 billion (by EUR 238 million or 12 per cent more than in 2019).

Public funds accounted for the major share, i.e. 81 per cent (EUR 1.9 billion) of the total funds received by educational institutions. Over a year, it grew by EUR 198 million (12 per cent). The amount of funds from national natural and legal persons increased by EUR 16 million (5 per cent) and made up 13 per cent (EUR 298 million) of total funds received by educational institutions. Education fees from students, payments for hostels, catering represented a major proportion of these funds, i.e. 73 per cent (EUR 218 million).

In 2020, funds received by educational institutions from foreign institutions, international organisations amounted to EUR 137 million, i.e. by EUR 25 million (22 per cent) more than in 2019. Universities received the major share (EUR 86 million) of these funds.

In 2020, general government funds per person studying in an educational institution totalled, on average, EUR 3,180, the funds of national and foreign natural and legal persons – EUR 744 (in 2019, EUR 2,848 and 677 respectively).

Expenditure on wages, salaries and social insurance contributions for employees accounted for the largest proportion of education expenditure (75 per cent).
