In 2020 the average number of employees in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to 1 million 280.2 thousand, in the private sector – 916 thousand (71.5 per cent of the total number of employees in the whole economy), in the  public sector – 364.2 thousand (28.5 per cent). Compared to 2019, the number of employees in the whole economy decreased by 0.6 per cent (7.7 thousand): in the private sector – by 0.5 per cent (4.7 thousand), in the public sector – by 0.8 per cent (3 thousand).

In 2020, against 2019, change in the average number of employees varied by economic activity. The largest increase in the average number of employees was recorded in enterprises engaged in transportation and storage – by 3.7 thousand (2.7 per cent), while the largest decrease – wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles – 6.5 thousand (3.1 per cent).

In 2020, the number of part-time employees totalled 223 thousand, or 17.4 per cent of the total employees in the whole economy and, against 2019, decreased by 2.2 thousand (1 per cent). Over the year, the number of full-time employees decreased by 0.5 per cent and totalled 1 million 57.2 thousand.

The largest proportion of persons working part-time, compared to total number of part-time employees, was recorded in enterprises engaged in education (18.2 per cent), wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (14.4 per cent), and human health and social work activities (13.2 per cent).

In 2020, the major proportion of employees, compared to total number of employees in the whole economy, worked in enterprises and institutions engaged in manufacturing (16 per cent), wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (15.8 per cent) and transportation and storage (11 per cent). The lowest proportion fell within employees working in mining and quarrying, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, as well as other service activities – 0.2, 0.9 and 1 per cent respectively. In the public sector, the largest proportion of employees were employed in enterprises engaged in education (33.9 per cent), public administration and defence; compulsory social security (22.2 per cent) and human health and social work activities (21.9 per cent). In the private sector, the largest number of employees was recorded in manufacturing (22.2 per cent) and wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (22 per cent).

In 2020, the majority of employees worked in Vilnius county (42.9 per cent, or 549.5 thousand employees), Kaunas county ranked second (20.2 per cent, or 258.5 thousand). One tenth (10.2 per cent, or 131.1 thousand) of all employees worked in Klaipėda county. The lowest proportion of employees was recorded in Tauragė county – 1.8 per cent, or 23.6 thousand of all employed persons in the whole economy. In 2020, the highest increase in the average number of employees was recorded in Telšiai (0.4 per cent) and Vilnius (0.1 per cent) counties.

The largest proportion of employees in enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles was recorded in Vilnius (49.8 per cent) and Kaunas (22.4 per cent) counties. Employees in Vilnius and Kaunas counties made up more than half (50.3 per cent) of all the employees in the manufacturing sector. Nearly one third (28 per cent) of employees engaged in agricultural, forestry and fishery activities worked in Vilnius county. The greatest proportion of all employees engaged in financial and insurance (83.9 per cent), as well as information and communication (75.4 per cent) activities were employed in Vilnius county. Arts, entertainment and recreation enterprises employed twice as many employees in Vilnius county (40.1 per cent) as in Kaunas county (19.6 per cent).

Over the year, the average number of employees of budgetary institutions decreased by 0.5 per cent (1,633) and, in 2020, accounted for 23.9 per cent of all employees in the whole economy and 84.1 per cent of all employees in the public sector. The number of persons employed in budgetary institutions dropped in all counties, with the greatest decrease recorded in Marijampolė county (331, or 2.8 per cent). In other counties, it decreased from 2.6 to 0.7 per cent, except Vilnius county, where the number of employees of budgetary institutions increased by 1,098, or 0.9 per cent.

In 2020, women made up 49.7 per cent (636.7 thousand) of all employees in the whole economy, men – 50.3 per cent (643.5 thousand). In 2020, against 2019, the number of women in the whole economy decreased by 10.3 thousand, and that of men increased by 2.5 thousand.


Which jobs predominate among men and among women?

Male-dominated jobs:
 

Construction – 87.1 per cent;

Mining and quarrying – 82.3 per cent;

Transportation and storage – 81.4 per cent.

 

Female-dominated jobs:

Human health and social work – 83.4 per cent;

Education – 77.5 per cent;

Accommodation and food service – 73.8 per cent.
