In 2022, the number of employed persons in the country totalled 1 million 420.8 thousand. There were 694.5 thousand employed men and 726.3 thousand employed women. Over the year, the number of employed persons increased by 52.2 thousand (3.8 per cent).
In 2022, there were 86.4 thousand employed persons aged 15–24 in the whole economy. Against 2021, this figure increased by 0.5 thousand (0.6 per cent). Over the year, the number of employed persons aged 55–64 increased by 18 thousand (6.4 per cent) and totalled 300.1 thousand in 2022.

In 2022, the employment rate of persons aged 15–64 stood at 73.8 per cent. Over the year, it increased by 1.3 percentage points. In 2022, against 2021, the male employment rate (aged 15–64) stood at 73.9, the female one – at 73.6 per cent; over the year, these figures increased by 0.8 and 1.6 percentage points respectively.
In 2022, the youth (aged 15–24) employment rate stood at 32 per cent. Over the year, it increased by 0.6 percentage point. Over the year, the employment rate of persons aged 55–64 increased by 1.8 percentage points and stood at 69.8 per cent.

In 2022, the highest employment rate for men was recorded in the 30–34 age group and stood at 91 per cent. Meanwhile, the highest employment rate for women was recorded in the 40–44 age group and stood at 88.6 per cent. The employment rate of young men aged 15–24 stood at 31.6 per cent, that of young women – 32.3 per cent. In 2022, 15.5 per cent of men aged 65 and older and 9.7 per cent of women of the same age were in employment.

In 2022, employees accounted for 87.8, self-employed persons – 11.7, contributing family workers – 0.5 per cent of the total employed population. In 2022, the proportion of female employees exceeded that of male employees – 89.7 and 85.7 per cent respectively.

Over the year, the largest growth in the number of employed persons was observed in the human health and social work activities (10 thousand), while the largest drop – in industry (3.5 thousand).
In 2022, the majority of persons worked in industry – 254.4 thousand (17.9 per cent of the total number of employed persons), trade – 206.5 thousand (14.5 per cent), and education – 126.8 thousand (8.9 per cent).
In 2022, the largest number of employed men was observed in the construction sector (91.4 per cent), as well as the transportation and storage sector (73.7 per cent), while women prevailed in the human health and social work activities and education (86.7 and 81.4 per cent respectively).

In 2022, the biggest proportion of employed persons were professionals – 390 thousand (27.4 per cent of the total number of employed persons), craft and related trades workers – 189.6 thousand (13.3 per cent), service and sales workers – 170.8 thousand (12 per cent). Apart from armed forces occupations, the lowest proportion fell within skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers – 45.9 thousand (3.2 per cent), and clerical support workers – 64.4 thousand (4.5 per cent). 132.7 thousand (9.3 per cent) of employed persons were managers.
In 2022, men accounted for the major share of plant and machine operators, and assemblers, as well as craft and related trades workers – 84.3 and 77.3 per cent respectively, while the majority of women were employed as service and sales workers, as well as clerical support workers (75.8 and 73 per cent).

In 2022, 50 per cent of the total employed population had higher or advanced vocational education and training, 36.9 – upper secondary (without/with vocational qualification), 8.1 per cent – special upper secondary education, 5 per cent of employed population had lower secondary (with vocational qualification) or lower education.

Additional job
In addition to the main job, 81.4 thousand of the employed persons had additional job. Most often men were additionally employed in the service sector (66.8 per cent), agriculture, forestry and fishing (11.9 per cent) and construction sector (11.9 per cent). Most often women additionally worked in the service (86 per cent) and industry (6.1 per cent) sector.

In 2022, the highest employment rate of the population aged 15–64 was recorded in the Netherlands – 81.8, Malta – 77.6, and Sweden – 77.1 per cent, while the lowest – in Italy – 60.1, Greece – 60.7, and Romania – 63.1 per cent. In 2022, total employment rate of the EU population aged 15–64 stood at 69.8 per cent, in Lithuania – 73.8 per cent.

The highest employment rate of the population of this age group was recorded in Sweden – 77.3, Estonia – 73.7, and Germany – 73.3 per cent, while the lowest – in Luxembourg – 46.6, Romania – 46.7, and Croatia – 50.1 per cent. In 2022, in Lithuania, the employment rate of the population aged 55–64 stood at 69.8 per cent.
