In 2020, 43.1 thousand people immigrated to Lithuania, which is 1.1 times (by 3 thousand) more than in 2019.
In 2020, 23.1 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania. Against 2019, the number of emigrants decreased by 21.2 per cent (6.2 thousand).
Last year, for the first time since 2001, the number of residents who returned to Lithuania exceeded that of people who emigrated from Lithuania – by 5.5 thousand.
In 2020, the number of foreign immigrants exceeded that of emigrants by 14.5 thousand.
Over the last eleven years (2010–2020), 261.8 thousand persons immigrated to Lithuania, of whom 174.6 thousand (66.7 per cent) were Lithuanian nationals who returned to Lithuania, and 87.2 thousand (33.3 per cent) – foreigners. In 2010–2020, 480.9 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania, of whom 435.1 thousand (90.5 per cent) were Lithuanian nationals, and 45.9 thousand (9.5 per cent) – foreigners. During the same period, in 2010–2020, the number of people who emigrated from Lithuania exceeded the number of those who immigrated to Lithuania by 219.1 thousand. The net international migration by Lithuanian nationals was negative (the number of those who emigrated exceeded the number of those who immigrated by 260.5 thousand), by foreigners – positive (the number of those who immigrated exceeded the number of those who emigrated by 41.4 thousand).

In 2020, the crude immigration rate stood at 15.4 (in 2019, 14.3). Last year, there were 7.4 citizens of the Republic of Lithuania per 1,000 population who returned to Lithuania, and 8 foreigners per 1,000 population who immigrated to Lithuania (in 2019, 7.3 and 7 respectively).
In 2020, 20.8 thousand (48.3 per cent of all immigrants) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania returned to Lithuania, which is by 0.4 thousand (2 per cent) more than in 2019. In 2020, more than half (11.8 thousand (56.7 per cent) of them were men.
In 2020, most of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania came back from the United Kingdom (9.6 thousand, or 46.2 per cent), Norway (2 thousand, or 9.6 per cent), Germany (1.6 thousand, or 7.7 per cent), Ireland (1.4 thousand, or 6.7 per cent). Against 2019, the number of citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania from the United Kingdom and Germany slightly increased (by 0.4 and 5 per cent respectively), while from Ireland and Norway – decreased (by 8 and 4.2 per cent respectively).
In 2020, the median age of male and female citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who returned to Lithuania was 30 and 29 years respectively. Compared to 2019, the age of males increased by 1 year, that of females – remained unchanged.
More than half (57 per cent) of male and 50.4 per cent of female citizens of the Republic of Lithuania aged 18 and over who returned to Lithuania in 2020 have never been married, one third of them (31.2 per cent of men and 33.3 per cent of women) – were married.
In 2020, 22.3 thousand foreigners immigrated to the country (51.7 per cent of all immigrants), which is by 2.6 thousand (1.1 times) more than in 2019. In 2020, the majority (20 thousand or 90 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania were men.
Almost half (9.3 thousand, or 41.7 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania in 2020 were the citizens of Ukraine, 7.3 thousand (32.7 per cent) – Belarus, 1 thousand (4.5 per cent) – the Russian Federation. Over the year, the number of citizens of Ukraine who immigrated to Lithuania grew by 5 per cent, Belarus – 1.1 times, while of the Russian Federation – decreased by 4.5 per cent.
In 2020, the median age of male foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania was 37, female – 29 years (in 2019, 37 and 28 years respectively).
The majority of male (92.8 per cent) and more than half of female (66.8 per cent) foreign immigrants aged 18 and older had never been married, 5.6 per cent of men and 30.9 per cent of women – were married.

In 2020, the crude emigration rate (the number of emigrants per 1,000 population) was on the decrease and stood at 8.3 ‰ (in 2019, at 10.5 ‰).
In 2020, the number of male and female emigrants amounted to 14.3 thousand and 8.8 thousand respectively, i.e. the number of male emigrants exceeded that of female emigrants by 5.5 thousand. Against 2019, the number of male and female emigrants decreased by 1.9 thousand (11.5 per cent) and 4.3 thousand (32.9 per cent) respectively.

Last year, 6 thousand (26 per cent) of all emigrants chose the United Kingdom as their destination of emigration, Ukraine was chosen by 3.8 thousand (16.5 per cent), Belarus – 2.1 thousand (9.1 per cent), Germany – 1.8 thousand (7.8 per cent), Norway – 1.7 thousand (7.4 per cent). Compared to 2019, the number of emigrants to the United Kingdom decreased by 4.1 thousand (40.3 per cent), Germany – 801 (31.1 per cent), Norway – 685 (28.9 per cent), while Ukraine and Belarus – increased by 1.6 thousand (42.8 per cent) and 1 thousand (48.2 per cent) respectively.

In 2020, median age of male and female emigrants was 33 and 27 years respectively. Against 2019, the age of women increased by 1 year, that of men – by 4 years.
In 2020, the majority (60.3 per cent) of emigrants were born in Lithuania, 15.9 per cent – in Ukraine, 8.4 per cent – in Belarus, 3.7 per cent – in Russia, 2.3 per cent – in the United Kingdom.
In 2020, 15.3 thousand (66.3 per cent of the total number of emigrants) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania emigrated from Lithuania (in 2019, 24.5 thousand, or 83.7 per cent). 7.8 thousand (33.7 per cent) citizens of other countries emigrated from Lithuania; most of them were citizens of Ukraine (3.8 thousand), Belarus (2 thousand), the Russian Federation (472), India (231), China (107).
In 2020, more than half of male (76.9 per cent) and female (57.5 per cent) emigrants aged 18 and older had never been married, 16.5 per cent of male and 28.3 per cent of female emigrants – were married.
