At the beginning of 2021, 1 million 886.4 thousand (67.5 per cent) residents of Lithua­nia lived in ci­ties and towns, 909.3 thousand (32.5 per cent) – in rural areas. In 2010–2020, the urban resident popula­tion decrea­sed by 10.1, the rural resident population – by 12.8 per cent.

At the beginning of 2021, the number of women in Lithuania totalled 1.5 million, which accounted for 53 per cent of the total resident population. At the beginning of 2021, Panevėžys city municipality was the most “feminine” municipality in our country – 1,275 women per 1,000 men, Druskininkai municipality ranked second – 1,260 women per 1,000 men and Palanga town municipality third – 1,243 women per 1,000 men. Neringa municipality, Kaišiadorys district municipality and Klaipėda district municipality are distinguished by a bigger number of men compared to that of women – 911, 931 and 945 women per 1,000 men respectively. Although there are always more baby boys than girls born, the share of men is falling with age. In the group of population aged 75 and older, there were 2,454 women per 1,000 men: the biggest share was recorded in Pagėgiai municipality (3,006 women per 1,000 men), and the smallest – in Neringa municipality (2,016 respectively).
