Information and communication technologies (ICT) have major impact on daily life and work conditions. Businesses that use ICT on a daily basis are growing in number. Therefore, there is an inevitable increase in the number of professionals who develop and maintain information technology systems. Based on data of the statistical Labour Force Survey, the number of ICT specialists in Lithuania has more than doubled over the last 10 years (from 24.9 thousand to 52.4 thousand). In 2021, 76.3 per cent of ICT specialists were men (in 2012, 77.1 per cent). More than half (56.1 per cent) of ICT professionals were under 35 years of age.

At the beginning of 2022, 17.2 per cent of enterprises had ICT specialists whose main activity was related to ICT systems’ launching, enhancement and maintenance: 79.2 per cent – in large enterprises, 36.2 per cent – in medium-sized enterprises, and only 10.9 per cent – in small-sized enterprises.

In 2021, 13.1 per cent of enterprises organized IT upskilling training: for IT specialists – 7.8, for other staff – 11.2 per cent of enterprises. ICT training was organized by more than half (60.4 per cent) of large enterprises, 24.7 per cent of medium-sized enterprises, and 8.8 per cent of small-sized enterprises.

With the growing demand for IT professionals, more and more companies are facing problems in finding specialists in this field. In 2021, 62.2 per cent of enterprises encountered problems in their search for ICT specialists. 65 per cent of large enterprises had ICT vacancies after failing to find competent specialists; 62.2 per cent of small-sized enterprises and 60.3 per cent of medium-sized enterprises faced the same problem.

In 2021, 8.4 per cent of enterprises employed or were looking for ICT specialists. 48.8 per cent of large, 14.7 per cent of medium-sized, and 5.5 per cent of small-sized enterprises were searching for ICT specialists.

In 2021, 44.1 per cent of enterprises had ICT functions carried out by their own employees, 67.9 per cent – external suppliers.

At the beginning of 2022, ICT specialists accounted for 2.4 per cent of total staff of the State and municipal institutions. The lack of ICT specialists becomes a relevant issue: 51 per cent of institutions stated facing this problem.
