In 2019 the average number of employees in the whole economy (individual enterprises included) amounted to 1 million 287.9 thousand, in the private sector – 920.7 thousand (71.5 per cent of the total employees in the whole economy), in the public sector – 367.2 thousand (28.5 per cent of the total employees). Compared to 2018, the average number of employees in the whole economy increased by 1.6 per cent (20.9 thousand). In the private sector, the number of employees increased by 2.8 per cent (25.2 thousand), while in the public sector, it decreased by 1.2 per cent and amounted to 4.3 thousand.
In 2019, against 2018, the average number of employees in enterprises and institutions engaged in different economic activity varied differently, most noticeably increased in enterprises engaged in transportation and storage – by 11.5 thousand (9.1 per cent), while the largest drop was recorded in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, as well as education (1.9 per cent each).

In 2019, the number of part-time employees totalled 225.1 thousand, or 17.5 per cent of the total employees in the whole economy and, against 2018, increased by 4.4 thousand (2 per cent). Over the year, the number of full-time employees increased by 1.6 per cent and totalled 1 million 62.8 thousand.
The largest proportion of persons working part-time, against all part-time employees, was recorded in enterprises engaged in education (17.8 per cent), wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (14.8 per cent), and human health and social work activities (12.6 per cent).

In 2019, the highest number of employees, against all employees in the whole economy, worked in enterprises and institutions engaged in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (16.2 per cent), manufacturing (16.1 per cent) and transportation and storage (10.7 per cent). The lowest proportion fell within employees working in mining and quarrying, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, as well as other service activities – 0.2, 0.8 and 1 per cent respectively. In the public sector, the largest proportion of employees were employed in education (34.3 per cent), human health and social work activities (21.8 per cent) and public administration and defence; compulsory social security (21.8 per cent) enterprises and institutions. In the private sector, the largest number of employees was recorded in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (22.6 per cent), as well as manufacturing enterprises (22.4 per cent).

In 2019, the majority of employees worked in Vilnius county (42.6 per cent, or 549 thousand employees), the second was Kaunas county (20.2 per cent, or 260.3 thousand). One tenth (10.2 per cent, or 131.8 thousand) of all employees worked in Klaipėda county. The lowest proportion of employees was recorded in Tauragė county – 1.9 per cent, or 24.4 thousand of all employed persons in the whole economy. In 2019, the highest increase in the average number of employees was fixed in Vilnius county – 3.4 per cent, Klaipėda – 3.3 per cent.
The majority of employees in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles enterprises worked in Vilnius (49.4 per cent) and Kaunas (22.4 per cent) counties. Employees in Vilnius and Kaunas counties made up more than half (50.4 per cent) of all the employees in the manufacturing sector, and nearly one third (28.7 per cent) of agricultural, forestry and fishery employees worked in Vilnius county. The greatest proportion of all employees engaged in financial and insurance (84.8 per cent), as well as information and communication (73.4 per cent) activities were employed in Vilnius county.

Over the year, the average number of employees of budgetary institutions decreased by 0.7 per cent (2,256) and, in 2019, accounted for 23.9 per cent of all employees in the whole economy, and 83.9 per cent of all employees in the public sector. The greatest decrease in the number of persons employed in budgetary institutions was recorded in Kaunas county (1,121, or 1.9 per cent), as well as in Panevėžys (969, or 4.6 per cent) and Šiauliai (966, or 3.9 per cent) counties.

In 2019, women made up 50.2 per cent (647 thousand) of all employees in the whole economy, men – 49.8 per cent (640.9 thousand). In 2019, against 2018, the number of women in the whole economy increased by 3.1 thousand, and that of men increased by 17.8 thousand.
