In 2019, the number of the unemployed aged 15–74 amounted to 92 thousand: 51.4 thousand men and 40.5 thousand women, which is by 2 thousand (2.2 per cent) more than a year ago.

In 2019, the number of the unemployed aged 15–24 totalled 12.8 thousand and, against 2018, increased by 0.5 thousand (3.7 per cent).

In 2019, the number of the long-term unemployed, i.e. unemployed persons seeking for a job for one year or longer, totalled 28.2 thousand, which is by 0.8 thousand (2.9 per cent) less than in 2018.

In 2019, the long-term unemployed accounted for 30.6 per cent of the total number of unemployed persons. Over the year, their percentage decreased by 1.6 percentage points.


In 2019, the unemployment rate in the country stood at 6.3 per cent, which is 0.2 percentage point higher than in 2018. The male unemployment rate was higher than that of female and stood at 7 per cent, the female one – at 5.5 per cent. Over the year, the male and female unemployment rate slightly increased (by 0.1 percentage point).

The biggest difference between the male and female unemployment rate was recorded in the age group 15–24 (4.8 percentage points). The unemployment rate of young population (aged 15–24) in the country, in 2019, against 2018, increased by 0.8 percentage point and accounted for 11.9 per cent. Unemployment rate of young men was 14.1 per cent, that of young women – 9.3 per cent.

In 2019, the long-term unemployment rate stood at 1.9 per cent and, against 2018, remained almost the same. The male long-term unemployment rate exceeded that of female (2 and 1.8 per cent respectively).


In 2019, 56.8 per cent of the unemployed had upper secondary (without/with vocational qualification), 21 per cent – higher or advanced vocational education and training, 13.7 per cent – general lower secondary (without/with vocational qualification), and 7.1 per cent – special upper secondary education.

In all groups of age, the majority of the unemployed had medium education (from 51.5 to 78.3 per cent), the biggest proportion of the persons with the higher education, however unemployed, fell within the persons aged 25–34.

In 2019, the majority of the unemployed (82.5 thousand or 89.7 per cent) had previously worked, as the main reason for losing their job 17.7 thousand (24.4 per cent) of the unemployed indicated personal or family reason, 16.6 thousand (22.8 per cent) – upon the expiry of a fixed-term employment contract. 20.6 thousand (28.3 per cent) unemployed indicated that they were elementary occupations, 16.1 thousand (22.1 per cent ) – craft and related trades workers, 11.2 thousand (15.4 per cent ) – service and sales workers.

In 2019, the youth (persons aged 15–24) unemployment rate in the EU accounted for 14.4 per cent. The highest unemployment rate was in Greece – 35.2 per cent, Spain – 32.5 and Italy – 29.2 per cent, while the least – in the Czech Republic – 5.6 per cent, Germany – 5.8 and the Netherlands – 6.7 per cent. In Lithuania, the youth unemployment rate accounted for 11.9 per cent.
