In 2021, the number of employed persons in the country totalled 1 million 368.6 thousand. There were 687.4 thousand employed men and 681.2 thousand employed women. Over the year, the number of employed persons increased by 10.5 thousand (0.8 per cent).
In 2021, there were 85.9 thousand employed persons aged 15–24 in the whole economy. Against 2020, this figure increased by 3.2 thousand (3.9 per cent). Over the year, the number of employed persons aged 55–64 increased by 1.8 thousand (0.6 per cent) and totalled 282.1 thousand in 2021.

In 2021, the employment rate of persons aged 15–64 stood at 72.5 per cent. Over the year, it increased by 0.9 percentage point. In 2021, against 2020, the male employment rate (aged 15–64) stood at 73.1, the female one – at 72 per cent; over the year, these figures increased by 0.9 and 1 percentage point respectively.
In 2021, the youth (aged 15–24) employment rate stood at 31.4 per cent. Over the year, it increased by 2 percentage points. Over the year, the employment rate of persons aged 55–64 increased by 0.4 percentage points and stood at 68 per cent.

In 2021, the highest employment rate for men was recorded in the 35–39 age group and stood at 89.4 per cent. Meanwhile, the highest employment rate for women was recorded in the 40–44 age group and stood at 86.4 per cent. The employment rate of young men aged 15–24 stood at 33.3 per cent, that of young women – 29.4 per cent. In 2021, 14.5 per cent of men aged 65 and older and 8.5 per cent of women of the same age were in employment.

In 2021, employees accounted for 88.4, self-employed persons – 11, contributing family workers – 0.6 per cent of the total employed population. In 2021, the proportion of female employees exceeded that of male employees – 90.5 and 86.3 per cent respectively.

Over the year, the largest growth in the number of employed persons was observed in the industry (13.1 thousand), while the largest drop – in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycle (14 thousand).
In 2021, the majority of persons worked in industry – 257.9 thousand (18.8 per cent of the total number of employed persons), trade – 204.9 thousand (15 per cent), and education – 120.7 thousand (8.8 per cent).
In 2021, the largest number of employed men was observed in the construction sector (91.5 per cent), as well as the transportation and storage sector (73.3 per cent), while women prevailed in the human health and social work activities and education (86.2 and 79.9 per cent respectively).

In 2021, the biggest proportion of employed persons were professionals – 356.1 thousand (26 per cent of the total number of employed persons), craft and related trades workers – 185.5 thousand (13.6 per cent), service and sales workers – 166.5 thousand (12.2 per cent). Apart from armed forces occupations, the lowest proportion fell within skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers – 46.2 thousand (3.4 per cent), and clerical support workers – 64.7 thousand (4.7 per cent). 126.2 thousand (9.2 per cent) of employed persons were managers.
In 2021, men accounted for the major share of plant and machine operators, and assemblers, as well as craft and related trades workers – 83.5 and 77.1 per cent respectively, while the majority of women were employed as service and sales workers, as well as clerical support workers (73.6 and 72.1 per cent).

In 2021, 48.8 per cent of the total employed population had higher or advanced vocational education and training, 8.7 per cent – special upper secondary education, 5.2 per cent of employed population had lower secondary (with vocational qualification) or lower education.

Additional job
In addition to the main job, 70.6 thousand of the employed persons had additional job. Most often, both men and women were additionally employed in the service sector as well as agriculture, forestry and fishing (women – 84.7 and 7 per cent respectively, men – 67 and 15.9 per cent respectively).

In 2021, the highest employment rate of the population aged 15–64 was recorded in the Netherlands – 80.1, Germany – 75.8, and Denmark – 75.5 per cent, while the lowest – in Greece – 57.2, Italy – 58.2, and Romania – 61.9 per cent. In 2021, total employment rate of the EU population aged 15–64 stood at 68.4 per cent, in Lithuania – 72.4 per cent.
In 2021, the employment rate of the EU population aged 55–64 stood at 60.5 per cent. The highest employment rate of the population of this age group was recorded in Sweden – 76.9, Denmark – 72.3, and Germany – 71.8 per cent, while the lowest – in Romania – 43.8, Luxembourg – 46.6, and Greece – 48.3 per cent. In 2021, in Lithuania, the employment rate of the population aged 55–64 stood at 68 per cent.
