At the beginning of 2020, the estimated resident population of Lithuania amounted to 2 million 794.1 thousand, i.e. by 94 persons less than at the beginning of 2019. Since 2009, the resident population declined by 389.8 thousand, or 12.2 per cent.

At the beginning of 2020, population density in Lithuania was 42.8 persons per square kilometer (at the beginning of 2009, 48.8).

The decline in the resident population in 2019 was caused by the negative natural population change.

In 2009–2019, due to net international migra­tion, the population declined by 271.2 thousand (69.6 per cent of the total decline), due to the natural population change – by 118.6 thousand (30.4 per cent of the total decline).

At the beginning of 2020, the number of women in Lithuania was by 185.5 thousand higher than that of men (1 million 489.8 thou­­­sand and 1 million 304.3 thousand res­pec­ti­vely). Wo­men accounted for 53.3 per cent of the total resident popu­lation; there were 1,142 women per 1,000 men (at the be­ginning of 2009, 53.7 per cent and 1,161 respectively).

At the beginning of 2020, 1 million 164 thousand (49.1 per cent) persons aged 15 and older were married. Married men accounted for 51.4 per cent of the total number of men aged 15 and older, married women ­– for 47.1 per cent respectively.

At the beginning of 2020, 10.5 per cent of persons aged 15 and older were divorced, 8.1 per cent – wido­wed. The number of divorced women was 1.9 times, that of widowed women – 7.5 times higher than that of men.

At the beginning of 2020, the number of children (aged 0–14) amounted to 422.7 thousand, or 15.1 per cent of the total number of resident population, people aged 15–64 – 1 million 815.4 thousand, or 65 per cent, elderly resident popu­lation (aged 65 and older) – 556 thousand, or 19.9 per cent. Compared to the beginning of 2009, the number of children (aged 0–14) decreased by 58.9 thousand (12.2 per cent), the number of population aged 15–64 – by 339.1 thousand (15.7 per cent), but the number of elderly peop­le increased by 8.2 thousand (1.5 per cent).

At the beginning of 2020, the number of children (aged 0–14) was 1.3 times lower than that of elderly peop­le (at the beginning of 2009, by 1.1 times). At the beginning of 2020, there were 132 elderly per­sons per 100 children (at the beginning of 2009, 114). The number of elderly persons, compared to the total resident population, increased from 17.2 per cent at the beginning of 2009 to 19.9 per cent at the beginning of 2020.

At the beginning of 2020, the elderly men amounted to 188.1 thousand, or 14.4 per cent of the total number of men, that of women – 367.9 thousand, or 24.7 per cent of the total number of women (at the be­ginning of 2009, 186.6 thousand (12.7 per cent) and 361.1 thousand (21.1 per cent) respectively). The number of elderly women was almost twice as high as that of elderly men.

At the beginning of 2020, the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania accounted for 97.6 per cent of the country’s resident population, those of Ukraine – 0.8 per cent, Belarus – 0.6 per cent, Russia – 0.4 per cent, (at the beginning of 2009, for 99, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 per cent respectively).

Most residents of the country (2 million 641.5 thousand, or 94.5 per cent) were born in Lithuania, 152.6 thou­sand (5.5 per cent) – abroad.

At the beginning of 2020, Lithuanians made up 85.9, Poles – 5.7, Russians – 4.5, other – 3.9 per cent of the country’s resident population.
