At the beginning of 2020, 1 million 882.5 thousand (67.4 per cent) residents of Lithua­nia lived in ci­ties and towns, 911.6 thousand (32.6 per cent) – in rural areas. In 2009–2019, the urban resident popula­tion decrea­sed by 11.4, the rural resident population – by 13.7 per cent.

At the beginning of 2020, the number of women in Lithuania totaled 1.5 million, which accounted for 53.3 per cent of the total resident population. At the beginning of 2020, Panevėžys city municipality was the most “feminine” municipality in our country – 1,278 women per 1,000 men, Druskininkai municipality ranked second – 1,277 women per 1,000 men and Palanga town municipality third – 1,262 women per 1,000 men. Neringa municipality, Kaišiadorys district municipality and Klaipėda district municipality are distinguished by a bigger number of men compared to that of women – 937, 937 and 960 women per 1,000 men respectively. Although there are always more baby boys than girls born, the share of men is falling with age. In the group of population aged 75 and older, there were 2,433 women per 1,000 men: the biggest share was recorded in Birštonas municipality (3,070 women per 1,000 men), and the smallest – in Kaunas district municipality (2,113 respectively).
