In 2022, 22.1 thousand live births were registered. Compared to 2021, the number of live births decreased by 1.262, or 5.4 per cent. In 2022, the crude live birth rate (the number of live birth per 1,000 popula­tion) stood at 7.8 (in 2021, 8.3).

In 2013–2022, 277.1 thousand live births were registered. The number of live births of boys exceeded that of girls by 7.2 thousand or 5.3 per cent.

In 2022, the total fertility rate was 1.27 (in 2021, 1.34). The most favourable demographic balance, ensuring demographic change, is observed when the total fertility rate stands at around 2.1.

In 2022, the mean age of women at childbirth was 30.2 years (in 2021, 30.3 years), that of women at the birth of the first child – 28.2 years (in 2021, 28.2 years).

In 2022, the major portion (45.4 per cent) of live births were first order births, second order births accounted for 38.4 per cent (in 2021, 43.7 and 39.7 per cent respectively). Compared to the total live births, the proportion of third and higher order births remained unchanged – 16.2 (in 2021, 16.6 per cent).

In 2022, the number of live births outside marriage amounted to 5.8 thousand, or 26.2 per cent of all live births (in 2021, 25.6 per cent). Most of the live births (88.1 per cent) outside marriage were registered by both parents’ statement (in 2021, 88.6 per cent).

In 2022, 21.6 thousand babies (98 per cent of all live births) were born in Lithuania. The number of children born outside Lithuania amounted to 0.4 thousand, or 2 per cent of all live births (in 2021, 0.7 thousand, or 3.2 per cent respectively).

In 2022, the major portion (61.7 per cent) of children born abroad were born in the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany and Sweden.
