In 2022, 87.4 thousand people immigrated to Lithuania, which is 2 times (by 42.5 thousand) more than in 2021.

In 2022, 15.3 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania. Against 2021, the number of emigrants decreased by 39.4 per cent (9.9 thousand).

Last year the number of immigrants exceeded that of emigrants by 72.1 thousand. Over the four years (2019–2022), the number of residents who returned to Lithuania exceeded that of people who emigrated from Lithuania (in 2022, by 7.6 thousand). The number of foreign immigrants exceeded that of emigrants by 64.5 thousand.

Over the last ten years (2013–2022), 353.3 thousand persons immigrated to Lithuania, of whom 183.5 thousand (51.9 per cent) were Lithuanian nationals who returned to Lithuania, and 169.8 thousand (48.1 per cent) – foreigners. In 2013–2022, 343.3 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania, of whom 297.7 thousand (86.7 per cent) were Lithuanian nationals, and 45.6 thousand (13.3 per cent) – foreigners. During the same period, in 2013–2022, the number of people who imigrated toLithuania exceeded the number of those who emmigrated from Lithuania by 10 thousand. The net international migration by Lithuanian nationals was negative (the number of those who emigrated exceeded the number of those who immigrated by 114.2 thousand), by foreigners – positive (the number of those who immigrated exceeded the number of those who emigrated by 124.2 thousand).

In 2022 the crude net international migration rate (1,000 population) was 25.5.

In 2022, the crude immigration rate stood at 30.9 (in 2021, 16). Last year, there were 7.3 citizens of the Republic of Lithuania per 1,000 population who returned to Lithuania, and 23.6 foreigners per 1,000 population who immigrated to Lithuania (in 2021, 8.5 and 7.5 respectively).

In 2022, 20.7 thousand (23.7 per cent of all immigrants) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania returned to Lithuania, which is by 3 thousand (12.7 per cent) less than in 2021. 

In 2022, 66.7 thousand foreigners immigrated to the country (76.3 per cent of all immigrants), which is by 45.5 thousand or 3 times more than in 2021. 

The majority (43.9 thousand, or 65.8 per cent) of foreigners who immigrated to Lithuania in 2022 were the citizens of Ukraine, 14.9 thousand (22.3 per cent) – Belarus, 2.2 thousand (3.3 per cent) – the Russian Federation. Over the year, the number of citizens of Ukraine who immigrated to Lithuania increased by 7 times, while of Belarus and the Russian Federation – increased by 1.8 per cent and 1.2 times respectively.

In 2022, the crude emigration rate (the number of emigrants per 1,000 population) was on the decrease and stood at 5.4 (in 2021, at 9).

In 2022, the number of male and female emigrants amounted to 9 thousand and 6.3 thousand respectively, i.e. the number of male emigrants exceeded that of female emigrants by 2.7 thousand. Against 2021, the number of male emigrants decreased by 8.8 thousand (49.9 per cent), the number of female emigrants – by 1.2 thousand (15.6 per cent).

Last year, 2.6 thousand (17.3 per cent) of all emigrants chose the United Kingdom as their destination of emigration, Norway was chosen by 2 thousand (12.9 per cent), Germany – 1.6 thousand (10.7 per cent), Ireland – 0.8 thousand (5 per cent), Ukraine – 0.6 thousand (4.1 per cent).

In 2022, the majority (79.7 per cent) of emigrants were born in Lithuania, 4.7 per cent – in Belarus, 4.2 per cent – in Ukraine, 3.1 per cent – in Russia.

In 2022, 13.1 thousand (85.5 per cent of the total number of emigrants) citizens of the Republic of Lithuania emigrated from Lithuania (in 2021, 18.8 thousand, or 74.7 per cent). 2.2 thousand (14.5 per cent) citizens of other countries emigrated from Lithuania, 1.6  thousand (70.6 per cent) of them were citizens of Belarus, Russian Federation and Ukraine.
