At the beginning of 2023, the estimated resident population of Lithuania amounted to 2 million 857 thousand, i.e. by 51.3 thousand persons more than at the beginning of 2022. Since 2013, the resident population declined by 114.6 thousand, or 3.9 per cent.

At the beginning of 2023, population density in Lithuania was 43.8 persons per square kilometer (at the beginning of 2013, 45.5).

The change in the resident population in 2022 was influenced by a significant increase in positive net international migration due to the large number of war refugees from Ukraine  – the number of immigrants exceeded that of emigrants by 72.1 thousand, and negative natural population change – the number of deaths exceeded that of live births by 20.8 thousand.

At the beginning of 2023, the number of women in Lithuania was by 185.7 thousand higher than that of men (1 million 521.5 thousand and 1 million 335.8 thousand respectively). Women accounted for 53.2 per cent of the total resident population; there were 1,139 women per 1,000 men (at the beginning of 2013, 53.9 per cent and 1,171 respectively).

At the beginning of 2023, 1 million 166 thousand (48 per cent) persons aged 15 and older were married. Married men accounted for 51.6 per cent of the total number of men aged 15 and older, married women – for 45 per cent respectively.

At the beginning of 2023, 13.6 per cent of persons aged 15 and older were divorced, 9 per cent – widowed. The number of divorced women was 1.6 times, that of widowed women – 5.5 times higher than that of men.

At the beginning of 2023, the number of children (aged 0–14) amounted to 427.1 thousand, or 15 per cent of the total number of resident population, people aged 15–64 – 1 million  858.5 thousand, or 65 per cent, elderly resident population (aged 65 and older) –  571.7 thousand, or 20 per cent. Compared to the beginning of 2013, the number of children (aged 0–14) decreased by 9.4 thousand (2.2 per cent), the number of population aged 15–64 – by 134.6 thousand (6.8 per cent), but the number of elderly people increased by 29.5 thousand (5.4 per cent).

At the beginning of 2023, the number of children (aged 0–14) was 1.3 times lower than that of elderly people (at the beginning of 2013, 1.2 times). At the beginning of 2023, there were 134 elderly persons per 100 children (at the beginning of 2012, 124). The number of elderly persons, compared to the total resident population, increased from 18.2 per cent at the beginning of 2013 to 20 per cent at the beginning of 2023.

At the beginning of 2023, the elderly men amounted to 200.8 thousand, or 15 per cent of the total number of men, that of women – 370.9 thousand, or 24.4 per cent of the total number of women (at the beginning of 2013, 182.5 thousand (13.3 per cent) and 359.7 thousand (22.4 per cent) respectively). The number of elderly women was almost twice as high as that of elderly men.

At the beginning of 2023, the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania accounted for 96.6 per cent of the country’s resident population, those of Ukraine – 1.8 per cent, Belarus – 0.9 per cent, Russia – 0.4 per cent (at the beginning of 2013, for 99.2, 0.1, 0.1, and 0.3 per cent respectively).

Most residents of the country (2 million 625.5 thousand, or 91.9 per cent) were born in Lithuania, 231.8 thousand (8.1 per cent) – abroad.

At the beginning of 2023, Lithuanians made up 83.6, Poles – 6.4, Russians – 5.1, other – 4.9 per cent of the country’s resident population.
