The population of Lithuania (edition 2023)

At the beginning of 2023, 1 million 955.8 thousand (68.4 per cent) residents of Lithuania lived in cities and towns, 901.5 thousand (31.6 per cent) – in rural areas. In 2013–2023, the urban resident population decreased by 1.7, the rural resident population – by 8.3 per cent.

At the beginning of 2023, the number of women in Lithuania totalled 1.5 million, which accounted for 53.2 per cent of the total resident population. At the beginning of 2023, Birštonas municipality was the most “feminine” municipality in our country – 1,272 women per 1,000 men, Panevėžys city municipality ranked second – 1,267 women per 1,000 men, and Palanga town municipality third – 1,245 women per 1,000 men. Although there are always more baby boys than girls born, the share of men is falling with age. In the group of population aged 75 and older, there were 2,378 women per 1,000 men: the biggest share was recorded in Pagėgiai municipality (3,097 women per 1,000 men), and the smallest – in Neringa municipality (2,025).
