Cattle
In 2023, compared to 2022, the number of cattle increased by 2.1 per cent. However, in the six-year period (in 2023, compared to 2018), the number of cattle decreased by 5.2 per cent. Since 2018, the number of dairy cows has been decreasing every year: in 2023, compared to 2022, their number decreased by 0.4 per cent, compared to 2018 – by 17.8 per cent. The largest share of cattle (in 2023, 79.8 per cent) was recorded in farmers’ and family farms. As on 31 December 2022, the number of cattle in organic production farms totalled 57.9 thousand (9 per cent of total number of cattle).
As of 1 January 2023, there was a total of 641.9 thousand cattle held on Lithuanian farms (farmers’ and family farms, agricultural companies and enterprises), of which 224.2 thousand – dairy cows.

Pigs

In 2023, compared to 2022, the number of pigs decreased by 9.8 per cent, compared to 2018 – decreased by 15.4 per cent. The share of sows in the total number of pigs as on 1 January 2018–2023 remained similar and made up 5.9 per cent in 2023. However, unlike cattle, pigs were mostly grown by agricultural companies and enterprises – 90.2 per cent of total number of pigs held in Lithuania in 2023.

Sheep and goats
In 2023, against 2022, the number of sheep decreased by 0.9 per cent. As on 31 December 2022, the number of sheep in organic production farms totalled 17.2 thousand (12.7 per cent of total number of sheep). For the past six years, the number of goats remained similar. In 2023, compared to 2022, the number of goats increased by 2.1 per cent and amounted to 15 thousand. Agricultural companies and enterprises held a very small number of sheep and goats, almost all of these animals (in 2023, 98 per cent) were grown on farmers’ and family farms.

Most of the poultry held (98 per cent) were hens, from which 38.5 per cent (3.7 million) were laying hens. Other types of poultry were held in small numbers: there were 174.7 thousand turkeys, 13.5 thousand ducks, 5.7 thousand geese. In 2023, against 2022, the number of poultry increased by 10 per cent. The majority (86.4 per cent) of poultry was held by agricultural companies and enterprises.

In 2022, 351.2 thousand tonnes of meat were produced (live weight). Most of it was made up by poultry – 45.4, pork – 28.4, beef and veal – 25.4, other meat – 0.8 per cent. In 2022, 261.6 thousand tonnes of meat (carcass weight, offal included) were produced. In 2022, against 2021, meat production (carcass weight, offal included) on Lithuanian farms increased by 0.8 per cent.

In 2022, milk yield totalled 1.5 million tonnes. Cow milk made up 99.7 per cent of the total milk yield. In 2022, against 2021, milk yield increased by 3 per cent. Average milk yield per cow in 2022, compared to 2021, increased by 5.1 per cent.
