Pigs

As of 1 January 2020, Lithuanian farms held  550.8 thousand pigs

That is the smallest recorded number of pigs since 2016. In 2020, compared to 2019, the number of pigs decreased by 3.7 per cent, compared to 2016 – by 19.9 per cent. The share of sows in the total number of pigs as of 1 January 2016–2020 remained similar and made up 6.3 per cent in 2020. However, unlike cattle, pigs were mostly grown by agricultural companies and enterprises – 81.6 per cent of total number of pigs held in Lithuania in 2020.

Sheep and goats

In 2020, against 2019, the number of sheep decreased by 7.4 per cent. As of 31 December 2019, the number of sheep on organic production farms totalled 23.1 thousand (15.2 per cent of total number of sheep). For the past five years, the number of goats remained similar, with a slight increase in 2020 (compared to 2019, 5.6 per cent) when it amounted to 15.1 thousand. Agricultural companies and enterprises held a very small number of sheep and goats, almost all of these animals (in 2020, 98.4 per cent) were grown on farmers’ and family farms.

Poultry

As of 1 January 2020, Lithuanian farms held  8.6 million poultry

This is the biggest recorded number of these animals in the past five years. Most of the poultry held (98 per cent) were hens, from which 38.1 per cent (3.2 million) were laying hens. Other types of poultry were held in small numbers: there were 124.9 thousand turkeys, 20.6 thousand – ducks, 9.2 thousand – geese. In 2020, against 2019, the number of poultry decreased by 26.9 per cent. The majority (82.4 per cent) was held by agricultural companies and enterprises.

Animal products

In 2019, 366.7 thousand tonnes of meat was produced (live weight). Most of it was made up by poultry – 44.8, pork – 29.8, beef and veal – 24.3, other meat – 1.1 per cent. In 2019, 271.3 thousand tonnes of meat (carcass weight, offal included) was produced. In 2019, against 2018, meat production (carcass weight, offal included) on Lithuanian farms decreased by 1.6 per cent. The production of poultry decreased by 9.4 per cent due to a decrease in number of poultry. An increase in number of pigs and cattle slaughtered resulted in an increase in pig and cattle meat produced (by 7.9 and 4 per cent respectively).

In 2019, the share of meat (carcass weight, offal included) produced by farmers’ and family farms, compared with the total production, made up 26.9 per cent (in 2018, 27.7 per cent), milk – 71.7 per cent (in 2018, 73.7 per cent), eggs – 12.8 per cent (in 2018, 10.9 per cent).

In 2019, milk yield totalled 1.6 million tonnes. Cow milk made up 99.8 per cent of the total milk yield. In 2019, against 2018, milk yield decreased by 1.3 per cent. This was mostly conditioned by a decrease in number of dairy cows, although average milk yield per cow in 2019, compared to 2018, increased (4.9 per cent).
