Cattle

 

In 2022, the number of cattle was the lowest recorded in the last five years. In 2022, compared to 2017, the number of cattle decreased by 9.5 per cent, compared to 2021 – by 0.1 per cent. Significant decrease in the number of dairy cows was recorded: in 2022, compared to 2021, their number decreased by 3.3 per cent, compared to 2017 – by 21.2 per cent. The largest share (in 2022, 80.1 per cent) of cattle is recorded for farmers’ and family farms. As of 31 December 2021, the number of cattle on organic production farms totalled 59.2 thousand (9.4 per cent of total number of cattle).


As of 1 January 2022, there was a total of 628.7 thousand cattle held on Lithuanian
farms (farmers’ and family farms, agricultural companies and enterprises), of which 225.2 thousand – dairy cows.

Pigs


As of 1 January 2022, Lithuanian farms held  
573.8 thousand pigs

 

In 2022, compared to 2021, the number of pigs decreased by 1.1 per cent, compared to 2017 – decreased by 13.6 per cent. The share of sows in the total number of pigs as of 1 January 2017–2022 remained similar and made up 6.2 per cent in 2022. However, unlike cattle, pigs were mostly grown by agricultural companies and enterprises – 83.9 per cent of total number of pigs held in Lithuania in 2022.

Sheep and goats

 

In 2022, against 2021, the number of sheep decreased by 2.6 per cent. As of 31 December 2021, the number of sheep on organic production farms totalled 19.8 thousand (14.5 per cent of total number of sheep). For the past five years, the number of goats remained similar. In 2022, compared to 2021, the number of goats decreased by 0.4 per cent and amounted to 14.7 thousand. Agricultural companies and enterprises held a very small number of sheep and goats, almost all of these animals (in 2022, 97.9 per cent) were grown on farmers’ and family farms.

Poultry



As of 1 January 2022, Lithuanian farms held 9 million poultry

 

Most of the poultry held (98.6 per cent) were hens, from which 42.2 per cent (3.8 million) were laying hens. Other types of poultry were held in small numbers: there were 95.4 thousand turkeys, 14.9 thousand – ducks, 6.6 thousand – geese. In 2022, against 2021, the number of poultry increased by 7.9 per cent. The majority (81.9 per cent) of poultry was held by agricultural companies and enterprises.

Animal products

 

In 2021, 347.1 thousand tonnes of meat was produced (live weight). Most of it was made up by poultry – 40.9, pork – 31.8, beef and veal – 26.3, other meat – 1.0 per cent. In 2021, 259.5 thousand tonnes of meat (carcass weight, offal included) was produced. In 2021, against 2020, meat production (carcass weight, offal included) on Lithuanian farms decreased by 6.0 per cent.

In 2021, milk yield totalled 1.5 million tonnes. Cow milk made up 99.8 per cent of the total milk yield. In 2021, against 2020, milk yield decreased by 1 per cent. This was mostly conditioned by a decrease in number of dairy cows, although average milk yield per cow in 2021, compared to 2020, increased (2.7 per cent).
