Alcohol consumption

 

In the last 12 months before the survey, 29 per cent of population (men – 21 per cent, women – 35 per cent) did not consume alcohol at all, which is by 4 percentage points more than in 2014. 13 per cent of population (21 per cent of men and 7 per cent of women) consumed alcoholic beverages at least once a week (in 2014, 14 per cent).

In the period of 12 months before the survey, 27 per cent of population (20 per cent of men and 33 per cent of women) consumed alcohol less often than once a month, 15 per cent (17 per cent of men and 14 per cent of women) – once a month, 16 per cent (21 per cent of men and 12 per cent of women) – 2 to 3 days per month.

The largest proportion of both men (88 per cent) and women (84 per cent) who consumed alcohol in the year before the survey was recorded in the 35–44 age group.

As regards assessment of alcohol consumption in the last 12 months before the survey among people having different educational attainment level, the results showed that alcohol consumption is more common among men and women having high educational attainment level. The proportion of population having low educational attainment level who consumed alcoholic beverages in the year before the survey is almost half as low.

Alcoholic beverages were usually consumed at least one day in the period from Monday to Thursday by 12 per cent of men and 3 per cent of women.

45 per cent of population did not consume alcoholic beverages in the period from Monday to Thursday. 29 per cent (in 2014, 27 per cent) consumed alcohol one day out of the four, 13 per cent (in 2014, 17 per cent) – two days out of the four, 7 per cent (in 2014, 8 per cent) – three days out of the four, 7 per cent (in 2014, 6 per cent) – all four days.

The amount of alcohol consumed by a person per day from Monday to Thursday, when alcohol was consumed, equalled 5 standard units of alcohol.

Greater amount of alcohol is consumed on weekend. Alcoholic beverages were consumed at least one day in the period from Friday to Sunday by 13 per cent of population (men – 21 per cent, women – 6 per cent).

51 per cent (in 2014, 54 per cent) of population consumed alcohol one out of the three days, 36 per cent (in 2014, 35 per cent) – two out of the three days, 9 per cent (in 2014, 7 per cent) – all three days. Compared to 2014, proportion of those who normally did not consume alcohol on weekend remained unchanged (4 per cent).

The amount of alcohol consumed per person on a weekend day (including Friday), when alcohol was consumed, equalled 7 standards units of alcohol.

44 per cent of men and 76 per cent of women who consumed alcohol indicated that in the period of 12 months before the survey, there was not a single case of hazardous alcohol consumption (6 standard units of alcohol).

Compared to 2014, proportion of population consuming hazardous amount of alcohol decreased from 56 to 38 per cent.
