Chronic diseases and conditions

 

Chronic diseases pose a growing concern. It is a challenge not only for the persons with chronic diseases but also for their environment, society and the State.

46 per cent of population indicated having chronic diseases or long-term (lasting at least 6 months) conditions. Long-term health problems were more prevalent among women than men – 51 and 40 per cent respectively. Eight out of ten persons aged 65 and over had long-term health problems.

In the survey, the respondents were asked if in the period of 12 months before the survey they had any of the selected chronic diseases (the list of chronic diseases and conditions was provided). The survey results showed that 30 per cent of population (women – 33 per cent, men – 26 per cent) had high arterial blood pressure (arterial hypertension), 30 per cent (women – 33 per cent, men – 28 per cent) – low back disorder or other chronic back defect, one in nine (women – 14 per cent, men – 8 per cent) – allergy, such as rhinitis, hay fever, eye inflammation, dermatitis, food allergy or other allergy.
