Use of health services

 

In the last 12 months before the survey, 74 per cent of population aged 15 and older (women – 80 per cent, men – 66 per cent) consulted a general practitioner (family doctor). Compared to 2014, change in the proportion of population who consulted a general practitioner concerning their health was moderate.

In the period of 12 months before the survey, 35 per cent of population (39 per cent of women and 31 per cent of men) consulted a specialist doctor or surgeon. Compared to 2014, proportion of persons who consulted a specialist doctor or surgeon decreased by 3 percentage points. Older women were more likely to consult a specialist doctor or surgeon.

Use of dentist or orthodontist services

 

In 2019, 50 per cent of the population had at least one visit to dentist or orthodontist (in 2014, 47 per cent). Men visited these specialists less often than women (43 and 55 per cent respectively).

In 2019, compared to 2014, the most noticeable change in proportion of population who visited a dentist or orthodontist was recorded in the lowest and highest income groups.

Compared to 2014, the proportion of population with the lowest income (I income quintile group) who visited a dentist or orthodontist at least once in the period of 12 month before the survey decreased from 44 to 33 per cent. Compared to 2014, the proportion of population receiving the highest income (V income quintile group) grew from 53 to 63 per cent.

Use of inpatient and day care services

 

In 2019, 13 per cent of population were hospitalized for at least one night (men – 11 per cent, women – 15 per cent). In the period of 12 months before the survey, 6 per cent of population (men – 5 per cent, women – 7 per cent) have been in day-patient facility.

Unmet needs for health care

 

One in five (20 per cent) persons have experienced delay in getting health care due to long waiting lists (difficult to get an appointment, referral, etc.). In 2014, this reason was indicated by 11 per cent of population. Visit to the doctor have been postponed due to distance and transport problems by 5 per cent of rural population and 3 per cent of urban population.

Compared to 2014, the proportion of those who did not receive dental care services when needed due to inability to pay for them (too expensive) grew from 5 to 16 per cent. In 2019, due to the same reason, 4 per cent of population were unable to receive medical services (excluding dental care) (in 2014, 2 per cent), 5 per cent – prescribed medicines (in 2014, 2 per cent), 3 per cent – mental health care services.
