Smoking can cause cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
In 2019, 76 per cent of population did not smoke (in 2014, 75 per cent), 19 per cent – smoked every day, 5 per cent – sometimes.

Almost one in four (24 per cent) persons did not smoke. Smoking is more common among men (36 per cent) than women (13 per cent).

Compared to 2014, the proportion of population smoking daily decreased from 20.4 to 18.9 per cent. In the 25–34 age group, the proportion of men smoking every day, compared to 2014, decreased from 42 to 29 per cent, that of women – from 16 to 11 per cent.

The lowest number of daily smokers was recorded among persons having high educational attainment level. The highest number of daily smokers was recorded among persons having medium educational attainment level.
The smallest proportion of men smoking daily was among those having high educational attainment level. A relatively small proportion of daily smokers was recorded among women having low educational attainment level (7 per cent) and high educational attainment level (8 per cent).

In the survey, the respondents were asked about their habits of using electronic cigarettes or similar electronic devices. Electronic cigarettes were used daily or occasionally by 12 per cent of persons aged 15–24 and by 0.8 per cent of persons aged 55 and older.
