In 2022, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises (non-financial enterprises, except natural persons carrying out economic activity) (SMEs) increased by 2.3 per cent. Very small enterprises (0–9 persons employed) accounted for the largest proportion – 85.4 per cent. Small (10–49 persons employed) and medium-sized (50–249 persons employed) enterprises accounted for 12.2 and 2.4 per cent respectively. Over the year, the number of persons employed in SMEs increased by 2.5 per cent.

Against 2021, the turnover of SMEs increased by 22.3 per cent and totalled almost EUR 96.2 billion. Turnover of small, medium-sized and very small enterprises made up 34.4, 37.9 and 27.8 per cent respectively.

SMEs earned EUR 6.6 billion net profit, i.e. almost by EUR 0.8 billion (14.3 per cent) more than a year ago. Net profitability of such enterprises accounted for 26.6 per cent (in 2021, 28.4 per cent). Very small enterprises were the most profitable ones – their profitability accounted for 8 per cent.

In 2022, exports of goods of SMEs amounted to EUR 17.6 billion and, against 2021, increased by 26.1 per cent.
