Cattle

 

In 2021, the number of cattle was the lowest recorded in the last five years. In 2021, compared to 2017, the number of cattle decreased by 9.4 per cent, compared to 2020 – by 0.8 per cent. Significant decrease in the number of dairy cows was recorded: in 2021, compared to 2020, their number decreased by 3.3 per cent, compared to 2017 – by 18.5 per cent. The largest share (in 2021, 80.8 per cent) of cattle is recorded for farmers’ and family farms. As of 31 December 2020, the number of cattle on organic production farms totalled 58.7 thousand (9.3 per cent of total number of cattle).


As of 1 January 2021, there was a total of 629.5 thousand cattle held on Lithuanian farms (farmers’ and family farms,
agricultural companies and enterprises), of which 232.9 thousand – dairy cows.

Pigs


As of 1 January 2021, Lithuanian farms held  
580.4 thousand pigs

 

In 2021, compared to 2020, the number of pigs increased by 5.3 per cent, compared to 2017 – decreased by 12.6 per cent. The share of sows in the total number of pigs as of 1 January 2017–2021 remained similar and made up 6.3 per cent in 2021. However, unlike cattle, pigs were mostly grown by agricultural companies and enterprises – 82.7 per cent of total number of pigs held in Lithuania in 2021.

Sheep and goats

 

In 2021, against 2020, the number of sheep decreased by 7.6 per cent. As of 31 December 2020, the number of sheep on organic production farms totalled 20.3 thousand (14.4 per cent of total number of sheep). For the past five years, the number of goats remained similar. In 2021, compared to 2020, the number of goats decreased by 2.6 per cent and amounted to 14.7 thousand. Agricultural companies and enterprises held a very small number of sheep and goats, almost all of these animals (in 2021, 98.4 per cent) were grown on farmers’ and family farms.

Poultry



As of 1 January 2021, Lithuanian farms held 8.4 million poultry

 

This is the biggest recorded number of these animals in the past five years. Most of the poultry held (97.1 per cent) were hens, from which 43.2 per cent (3.5 million) were laying hens. Other types of poultry were held in small numbers: there were 208.9 thousand turkeys, 14.9 thousand – ducks, 8.7 thousand – geese. In 2021, against 2020, the number of poultry decreased by 3.3 per cent. The majority (86.2 per cent) of poultry was held by agricultural companies and enterprises.

Animal products

 

In 2020, 367.0 thousand tonnes of meat was produced (live weight). Most of it was made up by poultry – 44.7, pork – 30.6, beef and veal – 23.7, other meat – 1.0 per cent. In 2020, 275.9 thousand tonnes of meat (carcass weight, offal included) was produced. In 2020, against 2019, meat production (carcass weight, offal included) on Lithuanian farms increased by 0.6 per cent. An increase in the number of pigs slaughtered resulted in an increase in pig meat produced by 3.5 per cent.

In 2020, milk yield totalled 1.5 million tonnes. Cow milk made up 99.8 per cent of the total milk yield. In 2020, against 2019, milk yield decreased by 3.8 per cent. This was mostly conditioned by a decrease in number of dairy cows, although average milk yield per cow in 2020, compared to 2019, increased (0.5 per cent).

In 2020, the number of eggs collected totalled 881.2 million (by 2.7 per cent more than in 2019).

In 2020, the amount of wool shorn totalled 289 tonnes, or by 4.6 per cent less than in 2019.
