Impact of social transfers on the absolute poverty rate

The difference between absolute poverty rate before and after social transfers shows the impact of social transfers on reduction of absolute poverty. With the deduction of social transfers (except old-age and survivors’ benefits) from disposable income, absolute poverty rate would increase to 12.3 per cent in 2020. Social transfers had the largest impact on the absolute poverty rate of households composed of one adult with at children: social transfers deducted, the absolute poverty rate in such households in 2020 would increase from 16.9 to 38.6 per cent.
