People at risk of poverty or social exclusion

According to the definition provided in the Europe 2020 strategy, in 2020, 24.8 per cent of population were living at risk of poverty or social exclusion (in 2019, 26.3 per cent). Persons at risk of poverty or social exclusion are those who meet at least one of the following conditions: living at risk of poverty, facing severe material deprivation or living in households with very low work intensity. Almost 70 per cent of persons living at risk of poverty or social exclusion fall into this category according to one of the three criteria, while one in sixteen (1.7 per cent of population) – according to all three criteria.

In terms of household composition, persons living alone and single parents were at the highest risk of poverty or social exclusion (50.7 and 51 per cent respectively). The smallest share of persons living at risk of poverty and social exclusion in 2020 was recorded in households consisting of two adults with one child (13 per cent).

In 2020, persons living at risk of poverty or social exclusion in urban areas accounted for 22.3, in rural areas – 29.8 per cent, which is by, respectively, 0.9 and 2.7 percentage points less than in 2019.
