The majority of Internet users had to perform at least one of identification procedures to access online services. According to the 2023 survey data, 67 per cent of persons aged 16–74 used, at least once in 12 months, an electronic identification (e‑ID) tool (smart ID mobile application, mobile signature “Mobile ID”, personal identification card, cryptographic USB storage device) to access online services for personal purposes. An e‑ID tool was used by 93 per cent of persons aged 25–34 and by 27 per cent of persons aged 65–74, or by 75 per cent of internet users aged 16–74.

Most often, electronic means of identification were used to receive services provided by Lithuanian state institutions or public institutions.

The Internet users take various actions to control access to personal information on the Internet (such as name, date of birth, ID card number, contacts, credit card number, photos, location). In 2023, 48 per cent of all Internet users did not consent to the use of personal information for advertising purposes, 43 per cent – read privacy policy statements before providing personal information, the same number of Internet users restricted or denied access to their geographical location, 41 per cent – limited access to profile or content on social networking sites or shared online storage space.

In 2023, 44 per cent of the population aged 16–74 who used the Internet in the period of 3 months before the Survey were somewhat concerned about their online activities being recorded to offer personalized advertising, 37 per cent – not concerned at all, 19 per cent – very concerned. Among the oldest Internet users, the majority were not concerned at all that their online activity could be recorded through the use of cookies.

In 2023, 21 per cent of the population aged 16–74 who had used the Internet in the period of 3 months prior to the Survey used anti-tracking software, 27 per cent – changed their browser settings to restrict cookies.
