Renewable energy resources

The EU objective is to produce at least 20 per cent of its total energy from renewable energy resources by 2020. The objective set for Lithuania – 23 per cent by the year 2020. This objective was already achieved by Lithuania in 2014.

The greatest renewable energy potential in Lithuania is shown by solid biofuel – firewood and wood and agricultural waste used for fuel. In 2021, the largest amount thereof was used for the production of electricity and centralised heat supply (54.4 per cent) and in households (33.1 per cent). In 2021, production of heat by energy producers which use firewood and wood waste accounted for 64 per cent of total heat produced by power plants and heat plants, and 14.4 per cent of electricity produced by power plants.

In 2021, wind farms operating in Lithuania, together with individual wind power plants, produced by 12.2 per cent less electricity than in 2020. In 2021, 1.36 TWh of electricity was produced, which accounted for slightly less than a third of the total electricity produced in the country, or more than 9.6 per cent of electricity consumed in the country. A total of 671 MW of wind power plants have been installed in Lithuania.

As regards renewable electricity, in 2021, electricity produced by solar power plants amounted to 190.8 million kilowatts (kWh) of electrical energy, or by 48.1 per cent more than in 2020. This is important as thus local electricity production is promoted and this contributes to the implementation of international goals on mitigating climate change.

In 2021, hydropower plants produced 383.7 million kWh of electricity, i.e. by 27.7 per cent more than in 2020.

In 2021, against 2020, the use of biogas for the production of electricity increased by 5 per cent and amounted to 156.7 million kWh.

The use of biofuel reduces environmental pollution. Two kinds of biofuel are used in Lithuania – biodiesel and bioethanol. In 2021, biodiesel and bioethanol consumed in transport amounted to 124.8 thousand and 25.6 thousand tonnes respectively.
