In 2021, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises (non-financial enterprises, except natural persons carrying out economic activity) (SMEs) increased by 6.1 per cent. Very small enterprises (0–9 person employed) accounted for the largest proportion – 84.3 per cent. Small (10–49 persons employed) and medium-sized (50–249 person employed) enterprises accounted for 13.1 and 2.6 per cent respectively. Over the year, the number of persons employed in SMEs decreased by 0.9 per cent.

Against 2020, the turnover of SMEs increased by 21.4 per cent and totalled almost EUR 78.1 billion. Turnover of small, medium-sized and very small enterprises made up 35, 37 and 28 per cent respectively.

SMEs earned EUR 6 billion net profit, i.e. almost by EUR 2 billion (or 52.2 per cent) more than a year ago. Net profitability of such enterprises accounted for 30.1 per cent (in 2020, 23.7 per cent). Very small enterprises were the most profitable ones – their profitability accounted for 10 per cent.

In 2021, exports of goods of SMEs amounted to EUR 13.9 billion and, against 2020, increased by 18.1 per cent.
