Activities of cultural institutions

In 2022, there were 110 museums* in our country, of which 4 – national, 16 – republican, 54 – municipal, 11 – non‑state, and 25 – departmental museums. Over the year, the number of museum visitors totalled 5 million, or by 1.8 million (56 per cent) more than in 2021. The highest number of visitors was received by the Lithuanian Sea Museum (615 thousand), National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (444 thousand), Lithuanian National Museum of Art (401 thousand), and Trakai History Museum (255 thousand).

In 2022, museums organised 1,905 exhibitions, of which 117 – international (in 2021, 1,665 and 91 respectively), issued 213 publications on museum activities (in 2021, 142). The number of exhibits of the museum stock totalled 7 million 962 thousand, although only 383 thousand (4.8 per cent) of them were exhibited.

In 2022, Lithuanian cinemas received 3 million cinemagoers. Over the year, one resident would visit cinema, on average, 1 time. Last year, the total number of cinema halls amounted to 124. In total, there were 19.3 thousand seats in cinemas. There were, on average, 0.8 thousand showings per cinema hall. Over the year, cinemas’ revenue generated from tickets sold increased from EUR 7.96 million to EUR 18.11 million (by 128 per cent).

In 2022, there were 946 thousand registered library users in all 2,152 Lithuania’s libraries, or by 21 thousand (2.2 per cent) less than in 2021. There were, on average, 440 registered users per library. Over the year, one user would visit a library, on average, 18.2 times. The number of both libraries and readers is decreasing each year.

There are 66 theatres in our country, of which 13 public and 53 private. In 2022, they gave 7.5 thousand performances, which were visited by 1.3 million theatregoers. Over the year, the number of new and renewed performances given by public theatres amounted to 232. In 2022, 7 state concert agencies arranged 777 concerts with 267 thousand visitors.

In 2022, there were 588 cultural centres in the country with 3.3 thousand amateur art groups, studies and circles, which held 41 thousand concerts and other cultural events. In 2022, the number of cultural centers decreased by 27, while the number of concerts and other events increased by 4.4 thousand.

The function of dissemination of professional musical culture both in the country and abroad is performed by seven state concert organisations:

• The National Philharmonic Society of Lithuania

• The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra

• The Lithuanian State Wind Orchestra "Trimitas"

• The State Song and Dance Ensemble "Lietuva"

• The State Chamber Choir "Polifonija"

• The Vilnius State Choir

• Kaunas State Philharmonic Society

In addition to the direct concert activity, the above mentioned institutions arrange international festivals and competitions in the field of professional arts in our country.
