In order to meet consumption needs, households used not only their own but also borrowed funds. In 2019, 13.1 per cent of households had a consumer loan, study loan, were indebted for goods or services acquired by hire-purchase agreement. 12.3 per cent of urban households and 14.6 per cent of rural households had some loan (except housing loan). Compared to 2018, the share of households having a loan increased by 1.1 percentage points. 20 per cent of households having loans stated that the repayment of a loan is not a financial burden, 17 per cent – a very heavy burden. In 2018, repayment of a loan was not considered as a burden by 17 per cent of households having a loan.

4 per cent of households living on disposable income were in very difficult situation, i.e. were struggling to make ends meet, 18 per cent – were in difficult situation, while 6 per cent – did not face the said problems. The most difficult situation was observed in one-person and single parent (one adult with dependent children) households: respectively, 8 and 4 per cent of such households indicated facing very difficult situation. Even 66 per cent of households composed of one adult with children and 61 per cent of one-person households stated that their disposable income in cash was lower than the amount of money needed to meet their regular needs. In 2019, the number of persons living in households with disposable income in cash lower than the amount of money needed to meet their regular needs made up 40 per cent; compared to 2018, the share of such persons decreased by 5 percentage points. Based on population opinion, in 2019, the smallest amount of money needed to meet regular needs was EUR 429 per capita per month; compared to 2018, it increased by EUR 15.
