According to the census data, as of 1 June 2020, there were 132.1 thousand farms producing agricultural products in Lithuania. Farms owned 3 million 85.9 thousand ha of land, of which 2 million 914.5 thousand ha – utilised agricultural land.
Over ten years, the number of farms in Lithuania decreased by 34 per cent, and since 2003 – by 51 per cent. Meanwhile, since 2010, the land area owned by farms increased by 2.7 per cent, utilised agricultural land area – by 6 per cent. In 2020, compared to 2003, the area of land increased by 9 per cent, utilized agricultural land area – by 17 per cent.

The 2020 Census showed that farmers’ and family farms made up 99.4 per cent of all active farms and owned the major part (86.3 per cent) of agricultural land. Agricultural companies and enterprises, which accounted for just 0.6 per cent of all farms, owned 13.7 per cent of agricultural land.

Over the decade, the largest decrease was observed in the number of farms with the utilised agricultural area of 2–5 ha, 1–2 ha and 5–10 ha (compared to 2010, by 52, 48 and 34 per cent respectively). In 2020, there were 5.8 thousand large farms (with more than 100 ha of agricultural area); they made up 4 per cent of all farms and owned more than half of the total utilised agricultural area. In 2010, there were 3.8 thousand such farms, which made up 2 per cent of all farms and owned 42 per cent of the total utilised agricultural area.

The 2020 Census results showed that, in terms of the form of ownership, private utilised agricultural land made up about 57 per cent, leased land – 40 per cent, other land – 3 per cent of the utilised agricultural area. Farmers owned more private (53 per cent) than leased (30 per cent) land, while agricultural companies and enterprises, on the contrary, owned more leased (10 per cent) than private (4 per cent) land.

The average farm size (by area of agricultural land) increased from 13.8 hectares in 2010 to 22.2 hectares in 2020.

In 2020 compared to 2010, the average size of a farmer’s or family farm, in terms of agricultural area, increased from 12 to 19.3 ha, of an agricultural company or enterprise – decreased from 572.9 to 500.3 ha.

In 2020, arable land of farms larger than 1 ha made up about 77 per cent of the total utilised agricultural area, permanent grassland and meadows – about 22 per cent, fruit and berry plantations – 1 per cent, area under nurseries and other permanent crops – less than 1 per cent.

In 2020, on farmers’ and family farms, men accounted for more than half (55 per cent), women – for 45 per cent of all farmers (farm owners).

Average per agricultural company and enterprise, 2020
In the EU, farms are grouped into 14 classes by economic size. The first – lowest – class includes farms with the economic size smaller than EUR 2,000. About 39 per cent of Lithuania’s farms are classified under this class. The thirteenth and fourteenth class – of the largest farms – includes farms with the economic size equal to or larger than EUR 1.5 million. There are just 108 such farms in Lithuania – mainly agricultural companies and enterprises.

In 2020, according to the 2020 Census data, the value of standard output produced by all farms larger than 1 ha totalled EUR 2 billion 299.3 million. The major part (78 per cent) of the total standard output was produced by farmers’ and family farms.
In 2020, in terms of type of farming, farms engaged only in crop production and growing cereals, oil, leguminous, root crops, field vegetables and other crops accounted for the major proportion (43 per cent).
