During the 2020 census, detailed data on farms keeping different species of farm animals were collected. The number of farm animals was recorded as it was on 1 June 2020.

In 2020, compared to the 2010, the number of sheep on farms larger than 1 ha increased 2.5 times, beehives – 2 times, poultry – 6 per cent. Meanwhile, the number of horses decreased 2.5 times, pigs – by 37 per cent, rabbits – 33 per cent, goats – 24, cattle – 11 per cent.

According to the 2020 Census data, cattle was kept by 37.3 thousand (28 per cent) farms larger than 1 ha. Most of these farms (13.9 thousand, or 37 per cent) had 1–2 cattle heads; however, the number of cattle kept on such farms accounted for only 3 per cent of all cattle kept on farms larger than 1 ha. The largest proportion of these farm animals (120.2 thousand, or 18 per cent of all cattle) was kept on farms having 500 and more cattle heads.

In 2020, 28.9 thousand (almost 22 per cent) farms larger than 1 ha kept dairy cows. Most (17 per cent) cows were kept on farms having 500 and more cows. Such farms accounted for only 0.2 per cent of all farms larger than 1 ha keeping dairy cows.

In 2020, 8.4 thousand, or 6 per cent, of farms larger than 1 ha kept pigs. Most pigs (87 per cent) were concentrated on large pig farms keeping 5,000 and more pigs.

In 2020, 8 thousand (6 per cent) farms larger than 1 ha kept sheep. 1 per cent of sheep were kept on farms having 1–2 sheep. Such farms accounted for 15 per cent of all sheep breeders. Most farms kept 10 and more sheep (48 per cent of all sheep breeders).

In 2020, 2.5 thousand (2 per cent) farms larger than 1 ha kept goats. Most farms kept 1–2 goats (49 per cent of all goats’ keepers).

In 2020, 48.2 thousand (37 per cent) farms larger than 1 ha kept various poultry. Most poultry were concentrated on large poultry farms having more than 50 thousand birds. In 2020, there were 26 such poultry farms, with 8 million 866.3 thousand birds kept, which accounted for 84 per cent of all poultry kept in Lithuania.

In 2020, fewer farms kept cattle, pigs, goats, horses, poultry and rabbits; however, the number of farm animals per farm was higher than in 2003 and 2010.

All farm animals recorded during the 2020 Census were recalculated to livestock units.

In 2020, compared to 2010, the number of livestock units decreased by 20 per cent. The highest number of livestock units (40 per cent of all livestock units) were kept on large farms with the utilised agricultural area of 100 and more hectares, while the lowest number of livestock units were kept on farms with 2 to 5 ha of utilized agricultural area. In 2020, compared to 2010, livestock units increased only on large farms with 100 and more hectares of utilised agricultural area.
