Main sources of income

In 2022, the main source of cash income of two out of three (65 per cent) households was income from employment. Income from paid employment was indicated as the main source of income by 57 per cent of households. 34 per cent of households indicated social transfers as the main source of income. Compared to 2021, relative share of households living on income from employment and share of households living on social transfers remained unchanged.

Particularly large number of persons living on social transfers was recorded in households composed of two adults, at least one aged 65 and older, and of a single person. Old‑age benefits were indicated as the main source of income by 64 per cent of households composed of two adults, at least one aged 65 and older, and by 42 per cent of households composed of a single person, while other social transfers – by 3 and 8 per cent respectively.

In 2022, social transfers were indicated as the main source of income by 35 per cent of households in urban areas and one third of households in rural areas; compared to 2021, the said share remained almost unchanged. Social transfers were indicated as the main source of income by 31 per cent of households living in the major cities and by 41 per cent of household living in other towns.
